Thomas Beddoes (1760-1808) lived in ‘decidedly interesting times’ in which established orders in politics and science were challenged by revolutionary new ideas. Enthusiastically participating in the heady atmosphere of Enlightenment debate, Beddoes' career suffered from his radical views on politics and science. Denied a professorship at Oxford, he set up a medical practice in Bristol in 1793. Six years later - with support from a range of leading industrialists and scientists including the Wedgwoods, Erasmus Darwin, James Watt, James Keir and others associated with the Lunar Society - he established a Pneumatic Institution for investigating the therapeutic effects of breathing different kinds of ‘air’ on a wide spectrum of diseases.The treatment of the poor, gratis, was an important part of the Pneumatic Institution and Beddoes, who had long concerned himself with their moral and material well-being, published numerous pamphlets and small books about their education, wretched material circumstances, proper nutrition, and the importance of affordable medical facilities. Beddoes’ democratic political concerns reinforced his belief that chemistry and medicine should co-operate to ameliorate the conditions of the poor. But those concerns also polarized the medical profession and the wider community of academic chemists and physicians, many of whom became mistrustful of Beddoes’ projects due to his radical politics.Highlighting the breadth of Beddoes’ concerns in politics, chemistry, medicine, geology, and education (including the use of toys and models), this book reveals how his reforming and radical zeal were exemplified in every aspect of his public and professional life, and made for a remarkably coherent program of change. He was frequently a contrarian, but not without cause, as becomes apparent once he is viewed in the round, as part of the response to the politics and social pressures of the late Enlightenment.

This book explores the notion of software literacy, a key part of digital literacy which all contemporary students and citizens need to understand. Software literacy involves a critical understanding of how the affordances and conceptual approaches of everything from operating systems, creative apps and media editors, to software-based platforms and infrastructures work to inform and shape the ways we think and act. As a cultural artefact, programing code plays a role in reproducing, reinforcing, and augmenting existing cultural practices, as well as generating completely new coded practices. A proposed three-tier framework for software literacy is the focus for a two-year empirical investigation into how tertiary students become more literate about the nature and implications of software they encounter as part of their tertiary studies. Two case studies of software learning and use in university-level engineering and screen & media studies courses are presented, investigating the mapping of students’ trajectory of the learning of desktop applications against this framework for software literacy. Though the book’s focus is primarily educational, its content also has implications for any field that makes use of software and information & communication technology systems and applications. As such, the book will be of interest to all readers whose work involves the challenges and opportunities presented by software-based teaching and learning; and to those interested in how software impacts the workplace and leisure activities that make up our day-to-day lives.

Noch 1963 beschrieben Keitzer und Bena- vent die Pan endoskopie als wichtigstes Diagnostikum bei der Blasenhalsobstruktion, eine Meinung, die schon 1965 durch Zatz angezweifelt wurde. Die traditionelle Lehr- meinung uber die Blasenentleerungsstoerung beim Mann und die Inkontinenz bei der Frau schien damals dazuzufuhren, dass dem Urologen immer mehr Prostatektomien und dem Gynakologen immer mehr vaginale bzw. suprapubische Plastiken indiziert erschienen. Denna bok är en uppföljare till samlingsantologin ”Spaden och Pennan”, som utgavs 2009. I utgivandet av den boken medverkade de bägge redaktörer som står bakom utgivandet av boken Du håller i Din hand. De borgar för att innehållet, liksom föregångaren, även denna gång handlar om ny humanistisk forskning. Medverkar gör ett antal skribenter från olika discipliner, alltifrån professorer till författare och journalister. Gotland är naturligtvis i centrum för publikationen, men ramarna är satta för hela Östersjöområdet. Totalt medverkar 23 olika författare med 35 olika texter. Bland dessa får vi bl a lära att Haquin Spegels viktiga ”Rudera Gotlandica” kanske egentligen var en sorts plagiat, att Helgeandskyrkan i Visby ingick i ett mönster av danska rundkyrkor, om ”mjölkhäxor”, vad arkeologiska skelettmaterial kan bidra med till medicinsk forskning, att det fanns korrumperade präster på Gotland, om fotografer och konstnärer i 1800-talets Gotland, hur sjöfarten utvecklats på samma ö och, uppseendeväckande nog, att det är föga troligt att det hedniska templets i Uppsala lokalisering till Gamla Uppsala stämmer. Mycket nöje och förkovran är utgivarens önskan att denna bok ska skänka Dig.
