'I know for sure that I have an instinct for colour, and painting is in the very marrow of my bones' The life of Van Gogh has gone down in legend as the archetypal artist’s existence. He was irascible and short-tempered, hugely passionate and emotional, absurdly talented and, for most of his lifetime, notoriously misunderstood and under-appreciated. And yet today, we see him as one of the most inventive, influential and admired painters of the entire Western canon, if not a genius. Taking us through his short but explosive life, this graphic novel paints a vivid picture of Van Gogh’s unusual youth, his famous early failures, his discovery of a new style of painting, his tragic suicide, and the meteoric artistic legacy that followed. For those looking for an introduction to this incredible artist, or searching for a fresh take on his story – this is Vincent Van Gogh’s life as you’ve never seen it before.

Today Vincent Novello (1781-1861) is remembered as the father of the music-publishing firm. Fiona Palmer's evaluation of Novello the man and the musician in the marketplace draws on rich primary sources. It is the first to provide a rounded view of his life and work, and the nature of his importance both in his own time and to posterity. Novello's early musical training, particularly his experience of music-making in London's embassy chapels, influenced him profoundly. His practical experience as director of music at the Portuguese Embassy Chapel in Mayfair informed his approach to editing and arranging. Fundamental moral and social attitudes underpinned Novello's progress. Ideas on religion, education and the function of family and friendship within society shaped his life choices. The Novello family lived in turbulent times and was widely-read, discussing politics and religion and not only the arts at its social gatherings. Within Vincent and Mary Novello's close circle were radical thinkers with republican views - such as Leigh Hunt and Charles Cowden Clarke - who saw sociability as a means of reorganizing society. Thematic studies focus on Novello as practical musician and educator, as editor, and as composer. His connections with institutions such as the Covent Garden and Pantheon Theatres, the Philharmonic Society and Moorfields Chapel, together with his adjudicating and teaching activities, are examined. In his wide-ranging editorial work Novello found his true vocation positioning himself as preservationist, pioneer and philanthropist. His work as composer, though unremarkable in quality, mirrored the demands and expectations of his consumers. Novello emerges from this study as a visionary who single-mindedly pursued greater musical knowledge for the benefit of everyone.

The caterpillar says it's his house and he likes yellow. The beetle likes purple, and the bird likes blue. Over the past three decades, Vincent Van Duysen has become an important force in design through his expressive architecture and serene interiors. This book documents the source of his inspirations and ongoing laboratory: his own homes.Vincent Van Duysen has had an outsized influence on the world of architecture and design, from the rarefied echelons of interiors to highly successful collections for Zara Home and a nearly decade-long creative directorship of Molteni&C. Through his spare use of pure and tactile materials, Van Duysen employs a unique stylistic language that is both monastic and sensual, brutal and elegant, primal and refined. His commissions have included product design for numerous international brands, and commercial and large-scale architectural projects, among them high-end residences, a hotel, and retail spaces.Uncompromisingly contemporary and endlessly inventive, Van Duysen’s residences are both his design laboratories and highly individualized spaces. This is especially true of his own homes, the subject of this very personal book. From his base in Belgium, where Van Duysen has carved out modern spaces from a centuries-old former notary office, to his ground-up Casa M in Portugal, where living spaces flow between elemental walls, Van Duysen conjures residential projects from concrete, natural stone, wood, and light. In collaborating with the photographer François Halard, Van Duysen presents a truly personal vision of his own practice and point of view, where he becomes the architecture, and it becomes him.

Van Gogh painted a series of pictures depicting sunflowers, having first been inspired by the yellow flowers in Paris when he saw them growing in the gardens of Montmartre. Sunflowers were symbolic of life and hope to the artist, and could also be associated with his concept of the sun – glowing, yellow and hopeful.
