The Fascinating Life and Theory of Einstein
This book is a biography of Albert Einstein and also discusses his theory. The Theory of Relativity is a masterpiece of science that greatly increased our understanding of the universe and profoundly influenced our world. This book has simple derivations of his theory. The goal of this book is to help high school and college students, as well as the general public, understand Einstein's theory and his philosophy. His grandson, Bernard Einstein, wrote the Foreword that adds a personal touch to the story. The first part of the book, Chapters 1 to 7, gives a concise outline of Einstein's life and accomplishments with many anecdotes to keep readers interested. The second part deals with his theory. Chapters 8 through 13 present the derivations of Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity and equations using high school algebra. His most famous equation, E = mc2, is derived in four simple steps using high school algebra.

Throughout history, innovations in military technology have transformed warfare, which, in turn, affected state formation. This interplay between warfare, military technology, and state formation is the focus of this text. Theoretically grounded in the bellicist approach to the study of war and state, which posits that war is a normal part of human experience, the book argues that the threat of war by powerful, predatory neighbors has been, until relatively recently, the prime mover of state formation. Using a historical approach, it explains how advances in military technology have transformed war, and how new modes of war in turn have transformed forms of politico-military rule, especially with regard to the relationship between the state, armed force, and the people.

We encounter many voices in the pages of these books: the prophet Jeremiah, sundry kings, Jeremiah's enemies, and a people at first defiant and later in excruciating torment. In addition, we hear the voice of God speaking through Jeremiah and Jeremiah's contemporaries. God, however, does not just speak "back there"; and "then."; The living God speaks to us through the Bible, this book of faith. This study looks at how God is revealed to us as one who will not rest until we are at last a people whose hearts and minds are molded to the image and likeness of Jesus. This 8-session course explores selected passages from Jeremiah and one from Lamentations. 1. Has God Called Me? (Jeremiah 1:1-19) 2. Why Has God Done All These Things to Us? (Jeremiah 5:1-31) 3.Where Is the Disconnect? (Jeremiah 7:1-8:3) 4. What Makes God Cry? (Jeremiah 8:14-9:1) 5. Can God Love Rags? (Jeremiah 13: 1-14) 6. How Certain Is Our Future? (Jeremiah 31: 27-40) 7. Can You Imagine a Different World? (Jeremiah 31:27-40) 8. Will God Turn to Save Us? (Lamentations 3:1-39)

Modeling Mineral and Energy Markets

Modeling Mineral and Energy Markets

This book provides a framework for analyzing and forecasting a variety of mineral and energy markets and related industries. Such modeling activity has been at the forefront of the economic and engineering professions for some time, having received a major stimulus fC?llowing the first oil price shock in 1973. Since that time, other shocks have affected these markets and industries, causing disequilibrium economic adjustments which are difficult to analyze and to predict. Moreover, geopolitics remains an important factor which can destabilize crude oil markets and associated refining industries. Mineral and energy modeling, consequently, has become a major interest of energy-related corporations, mining and drilling companies, metal manufacturers, public utilities, investment banks,. national government agencies and international organizations. This book hopes to advance mineral and energy modeling as follows: (1) The modeling process is presented sequentially by leading the model builder from model specification, estimation, simulation, and validation to practical model applications, including explaining history, analyzing policy, and market and price forecasting; (2) New developments in modeling approaches are presented which encompass econometric market and industry models, spatial equilibrium and programming models, optimal resource depletion models, input-output models, economic sector models, and macro oriented energy interaction models (including computable general equilibrium); (3) The verification and application of the models is considered not only individually but also in relation to the performance of alternative modeling approaches; and (4) The modeling framework includes a perspective on new directions, so that the present model building advice willextend into the future.
