No architectural category is more fickle or more artificial than 'context'. This collection of 60 large drawings produced over five years by AA Diploma 15 addresses the construction of context by architecture for its own very particular purposes. A self-declared 'render-free zone', the unit's interrogations of architecture's seminal sites (antiquity, technology, the future and its proxies) examine the role of figuration and the exclusion of indeterminacy in the always already mediated question of context. Through the quiet business of counting, these line drawings - against the double ascendancy of parametricisation and the glossy rendered perspective - question architecture's ambivalent relations to the artifice it installs between itself and the outside world.

AA Files is the Architectural Association's (AA) journal of record. Launched in 1981 by the AA's then chairman Alvin Boyarsky, the journal appears twice a year and is sent out to members of the Architectural Association and individual subscribers, and is distributed to a global network of bookshops. Currently under the editorship of Maria Sh h razade Giudici, AA Files looks to promote original and engaging writing on architecture. It does this by drawing both on the AA's own academic research, public program, exhibitions and events, as well as by a rich and eclectic mix of architectural scholarship from all over the world.

The AA Book: On Location highlights the agendas and practices that have intersected both physically and metaphorically throughout the Architectural Association (AA) during the 2021-22 academic year. The publication features hundreds of projects by students from every unit and programme within the school, which together document the plurality of agendas explored, interests developed, approaches tested and questions posed and addressed by our community this year. As staff and students re-entered the AA buildings on Bedford Square in September 2021 after a year-long absence, the work of the school returned to its usual sites of production - the unit space, the workshop, the Lecture Hall, Ching's Yard, the Bar and the terrace; spaces where things are made and ideas are discussed. Reflecting this reinhabitation, the AA Book: On Location documents the spatial distribution of units and programmes throughout our premises in London and Dorset. Its chapters each represent a building or site in Bedford Square, Morwell Street or Hooke Park, and units and programmes are organised within according to where their main teaching space has been situated this year. Each building-based chapter is bookended by a series of written accounts, observations and reflections by staff and students, highlighting different spaces within the school to capture the experience of being on location and how this influences the work and way of life that emerges from the AA.

AA Approaches is a publication series that places debate at the center of architectural education. Architects, practitioners, students and theorists share their ideas on how urgent issues that we are faced with can be examined and rethought within spaces of education. At a societal moment characterized by rapid change and urgent global challenges, the ways we teach, the methodologies we explore and the work that emerges from these approaches can all have an immediate impact on our built environment. The first publication in this series will focus on 'stories' and how we discuss, narrate and visualize the complexities of a given condition. The counterfactual, or the projected future scenario, is an important strand of architectural education and practice that is due for reappraisal. The interaction of fact and fiction can champion architecture as a form of cultural production whilst retaining its critical framework. Yet in addition to the story, the media through which we communicate architectural ideas and the value of this representation - the film, the drawing, the image, mixed reality and more - can confront, dissolve and restructure standard drawing practices. The imaginative exploration of possibility, conducted with rigour and care, might be exactly what architecture needs to be right now.
