From Anthony J. Allen, the author of four best-selling books on ancient Chinese bronzes, ancient Chinese ceramics, and two others on later Chinese porcelain, this SECOND EDITION of "Allen's Antique Chinese Porcelain *** The Detection of Fakes" is his most ambitious project yet. In plain language, he describes tricks of the trade learned over his long experience authenticating genuine antiques and detecting fakes. The minefield that antique Chinese porcelain can become for the uninitiated is described and illustrated in full colour detail with examples dating from the Ming dynasty circa 1500 AD to 2000 AD. There is also brief mention of some of the pottery and stoneware ceramics in this period. This book is aimed at the novice collector, dealer, or museum curator, who largely because of rapidly escalating prices and presence of fakes, is often too frightened to enter the fascinating field of antique Chinese porcelain. Both novice and experienced readers will learn from his authentication techniques, as he describes never before published features to look for, firstly to authenticate genuine antique porcelain, but also to rule out the bane of every collector; the fake made intentionally to deceive. Non-Chinese speaking readers are taught to read reign marks and to distinguish genuine marks from those apocryphal marks which have been added to a later piece. There is even a formula for converting Islamic dates to the Gregorian calendar.Allen's forthright style of writing may upset some of his peers, sections of academia, and the sellers of fakes, for which he has zero tolerance, as he leads readers through Imperial, domestic and export porcelain, then into the sub-branches including shipwrecks and shards recovered from the old kiln sites in Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of China. Underglaze blue, famille rose and verte, monochromes, and pieces of various age, shape and decoration are illustrated, not just with a frontal view, but also of the undersides. Export wares, now the most common type of antique Chinese porcelain still available in the West, get special attention as he focuses on late Ming dynasty wares, underglaze blue, 18th century Chinese Imari, Batavian wares, armorial porcelain and famille rose of the 18th and 19th centuries.Faults, flaws, imperfections, foot rims, glazes, bubbles, are illustrated at length, including those features one expects to find, but also those that should not be present, notably on fakes.

Charles Grant Blairfindie Allen (February 24, 1848 - October 25, 1899) was a Canadian science writer and novelist, and a proponent of the theory of evolution. Allen was born near Kingston, Canada West (known as Ontario after Confederation) - the second son of Catharine Ann Grant and the Rev. Joseph Antisell Allen, a Protestant minister from Dublin, Ireland. His mother was a daughter of the fifth Baron of Longueuil. He was educated at home until, at age 13, he and his parents moved to the United States, then to France and finally to the United Kingdom. He was educated at King Edward's School in Birmingham and at Merton College in Oxford, both in the United Kingdom. After graduation, Allen studied in France, taught at Brighton College in 1870-71 and in his mid-twenties became a professor at Queen's College, a black college in Jamaica.Despite citation needed] his religious father, Allen became an agnostic and a socialist. After leaving his professorship, in 1876 he returned to England, where he turned his talents to writing, gaining a reputation for his essays on science and for literary works. A 2007 book by Oliver Sacks cites with approval one of Allen's early articles, 'Note-Deafness' (a description of what became known as amusia, published in 1878 in the learned journal Mind). His first books dealt with scientific subjects, and include Physiological sthetics (1877) and Flowers and Their Pedigrees (1886). He was first influenced by associationist psychology as expounded by Alexander Bain and by Herbert Spencer, the latter often considered by whom?] the most important individual in the transition from associationist psychology to Darwinian functionalism. In Allen's many articles on flowers and on perception in insects, Darwinian arguments replaced the old Spencerian terms, leading to a radically new vision of plant life that influenced HG Wells and helped transform later botanical research. On a personal level, a long friendship that started when Allen met Spencer on his return from Jamaica grew uneasy over the years. Allen wrote a critical and revealing biographical article on Spencer that was published after Spencer's death. After assisting Sir W. W. Hunter in his Gazeteer of India in the early 1880s, Allen turned his attention to fiction, and between 1884 and 1899 produced about 30 novels. In 1895, his scandalous book titled The Woman Who Did, promulgating certain startling views on marriage and kindred questions, became a bestseller. The book told the story of an independent woman who has a child out of wedlock. In his career, Allen wrote two novels under female pseudonyms. One of these, the short novel The Type-writer Girl, he wrote under the name Olive Pratt Rayner. Another work, The Evolution of the Idea of God (1897), propounding a theory of religion on heterodox citation needed] lines, has the disadvantage original research?] of endeavoring to explain everything by one theory. This "ghost theory" was often seen by whom?] as a derivative of Herbert Spencer's theory. However, it was well known and brief references to it appear in a review by Marcel Mauss, Durkheim's nephew, in the articles of William James and in the works of Sigmund Freud. The young G. K. Chesterton wrote on what he considered the flawed premise of the idea, arguing that the idea of God preceded human mythologies, rather than developing from them. Chesterton said of Grant Allen's book on the evolution of the idea of God "it would be much more interesting if God wrote a book on the evolution of the idea of Grant Allen".

In the early 1920s, Waterloo businessman Henry B. Allen donated $200,000 and 80 acres of land to the Allen Memorial Hospital Association to establish a hospital in memory of Mary, his wife. The hospital opened in 1925 and was operated by the Deaconess Hospital Association of the Evangelical Church. The School of Nursing was founded in 1925, but a lack of resources during the Depression forced the hospital into receivership and the school was closed. Hospital management was assumed by the Lutheran Good Samaritan Society in 1938, and the school reopened in 1942 as the Allen Memorial Hospital Lutheran School of Nursing. In 1989, the school became Allen College of Nursing, a degree-granting institution. Today, as Allen College UnityPoint Health, it offers an associate degree in radiography; bachelor of science degree in nursing; bachelor of health science degree with majors in diagnostic medical sonography, nuclear medicine technology, medical laboratory science, public health, and dental hygiene; master of science degrees in nursing and occupational therapy; and two doctoral degrees in health professions education and nursing practice. Throughout its 90-year history, Allen College has remained faithful in its mission to prepare health care professionals for their roles in society."

Reproduced from the September issue of Martial Arts Professional Magazine.1959. Dwight D. Eisenhower was president. Alaska became the 49th state. The movie Ben Hur set box office records. The first Super Bowl was still eight long years away and a small, South Korean army officer's demonstration at the University of Texas birthed a revolution in the largely unknown and mysterious Asian martial arts.In the crowd that witnessed Jhoon Rhee that day was a young Texan named Allen Steen whose fascination and ensuing love for the martial arts would lead him to establish one of the first dynasties in American karate. He was a pioneering champion, one of the original martial arts businessmen, and an internationally known instructor and coach. Today Mr. Steen is 75 years old and still keeps up with the martial arts world. He sat down with one of his original black belts and Martial Arts Success's Keith D. Yates to reflect on what he's seen in five-plus decades of training.Q: You've had a number of firsts in the martial arts in America, from being Jhoon Rhee's first black belt, to opening the first commercial karate school in the state of Texas, to being the father of Texas "blood 'n' guts" karate. You have seen the martial arts evolve tremendously over the years. Let's start with that demo at UT in 1959.STEEN: Well, it was at the Student Union building but they couldn't call it martial arts or karate so it was going to be a demonstration of stretching. That's why the football and baseball and track teams were all required to be there. I was on the track team and like everyone else, was just there for the fun of it. Even though Mr. Rhee was doing full splits and everything no one seemed to paying much attention and everyone was talking among themselves so he finally had enough and stepped up to the microphone and asked for the biggest athlete to come down front. That kind of quieted everyone down and the football players looked over at coach Darrell Royal, who had just started at UT, and he just shook his head "no." So Rhee says, alright, give me the two biggest. Royal is still shaking his head. Now Rhee says he wants the THREE biggest and then he says something like, "and no babies,"-his english wasn't that good at the time. So finally Darrell Royal nods his head and the two Talbert brothers from Texas City and another kid go down. These guys were huge, Diron Talbert, in fact, went on to play for the Washington Redskins.

Allen v. Allen: Deposition File, Petitioner's Materials
Allen v. Allen describes the legal, emotional, and economic challenges a family of four faces during a divorce. The parents, Lynne and David Allen, each seek decision-making authority and primary residence of their two adolescent children, while also disputing the valuation and division of their marital assets. The complexities that accompany family reorganization necessitated by divorce and the unique nature of family law litigation require interdisciplinary knowledge and the understanding and cooperation of lawyers, mediators, mental health experts, and financial experts. This second edition of Allen v. Allen takes place in an interdisciplinary setting to allow professionals to work together to protect the rights, needs, and interests of their clients and children. The case file features five witnesses (i.e., a court-appointed, neutral expert psychologist; valuation experts for both sides; husband and wife), exhibits, depositions, expert reports and evaluations, and social media evidence (Facebook posts, emails, and text messages). The parenting plan and business valuation disputes can be tried separately or together; each will challenge the learner's advocacy and examination skills.

This file is designed to develop the out-of-court representational skills of present and future divorce lawyers. It focuses on the case of Allen v. Allen and the divorce lawyer's role in representing a client in the negotiation and mediation of the Allen's divorce dispute. This file stresses the link between counseling a client, negotiation on behalf of a client, and representing a client at the mediation session. This counseling, negotiation, and mediation representation file is a companion to a trial case file and a depositions case file with the same name and family. The trial file and depositions file focus on advocacy skills in divorce disputes that cannot be resolved through mediation or negotiation.
