André Gide's Return From the USSR
Andr Paul Guillaume Gide (22 November 1869 - 19 February 1951) was a French author and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature (in 1947). His work "Retour de l' U.R.S.S." (1936) is a simple, yet important testimony to life inside a totalitarian society and the ensuing disillusionment felt by those who believed in the socialist utopia. Gide's informal style allows the reader to travel inside Stalin's Soviet Union and understand the disillusionment that Gide and others felt at seeing hopes dash upon the rocks of reality. It is a must read for anyone interested in learning about totalitarianism from inside a system.

Andr Campra was a French composer and conductor of the Baroque era who was born on 4 December 1660 in Aix-en-Provence, France. Campra served as ma tre de musique (music director) at the cathedrals of Arles and Toulouse before serving in a similar capacity at the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris from 1694 to 1700. In 1697, he began to compose for the theatre and published some theatrical compositions under his brother's name to protect his reputation. In 1700, he gave up his post at Notre Dame and devoted himself to theatrical music with critical success. Le Carnaval de Venise is a "com die-lyrique" in a prologue and three acts by Campra, with libretto by Jean-Fran ois Regnard. It premiered on 20 January 1699 at the Salle du Palais-Royal in Paris, performed by the Acad mie royale de musique, and was later restaged in February 1711. The opera is set in Venice during the carnival season and tells a story of love triangles, foolish old men, and an elopement in the first two acts, interwoven with Italianate slang. The third act is about Orpheus and his journey to Hades to recover Eurydice. Recommended for Intermediate and Advanced Performers

This book analyses Malraux's writing from his journalism in Indochina to his novels, art studies and (anti)memorialist essays. Cutting through the established dual biographical image of Malraux as a committed leftwinger and revolutionary novelist turned unconditional Gaullist and diehard anti-Communist at the Liberation, it makes a balanced assessment of Malraux as a non-ideological if elitist artist who shaped his public role as much as he shaped the existence of his heroes both novelistic and real.

Andre the Giant is known to millions beyond the boundaries of the wrestling ring. From his sheer size of 7' 4" and 500 pounds to his memorable acting role in The Princess Bride, the circumstances of his life and career ensured him recognition wherever he went. Born Andre Rousimmof in a small village in France in 1946 (to parents of average height, as were his four siblings) he suffered from acromegaly, or giantism, which results in an overabundance of growth hormones. This study provides a step by step explanation of André Malraux's theory of art. Drawing on his major works, such as The Voices of Silence and The Metamorphosis of the Gods, it examines key topics such as the nature of artistic creation, the psychology of our response to art, the birth of the notion of "art" itself and its transformation after Manet, the birth and death of the idea of beauty, the seriously neglected question of the relationship between art and the passage of time, the emergence of our "first universal world of art," the contemporary role of the art museum and the musée imaginaire, and the contentious question of the relationship between art and history. Rejecting negative criticisms from writers such as Maurice Merleau-Ponty and E. H. Gombrich, the study argues that Malraux offers us a theory of art that is fully coherent and highly illuminating. In addition, the analysis shows that he presents a radical challenge to the traditional explanations of art inherited from the Enlightenment that have dominated Western thinking for some three hundred years. In short, the study unveils a way of understanding art that is nothing short of an intellectual revolution.

Perhaps as never before in the history of our nation and culture have those words been so true Our culture is in desperate need of vision Circumstances can be both good and bad in life...even if one LIVES with vision...LIFE can happen and knock one for a "loop" But, if one lives without vision...it can be fatal...in numerous ways In this book Andre attempts to encourage one to not only LIVE with vision...but to do so...with an encouraging attitude even in the tough circumstances of life. He does so from not only an intellectual and spiritual standpoint, but as one who arguably has had more than his share of the tough circumstances in LIFE You will be blessed by Andre's thoughts...enjoy Dr. Dale L Denny, JD/CPA Nashville, TN.
The People of the Crater by Andre Norton, Science Fiction, Fantasy
Six months and three days after the Peace of Shanghai was signed and the great War of 1965-1970 declared at an end by an exhausted world, a young man huddled on a park bench in New York, staring miserably at the gravel beneath his badly worn shoes. He had been trained to fill the pilot's seat in the control cabin of a fighting plane and for nothing else. The search for a niche in civilian life had cost him both health and ambition.

ANDRE THE SQUIRREL AND THE CHRISTMAS GIFT"In the woods of the great northwest old growth forest", these opening lines were enough to capture my attention and the rest of the story just kept on reeling me in its heart warming tale of Andre' The Squirrel and The Christmas gift. The author, Roy Durham has managed to create a character that goes through a series of events and in the process evolves into a loving and caring friend, from the obnoxious and selfish person that he was. Illustrations by Melissa Tandoc are a treat for the eyes. The sketches add to the charm of the story and are a perfect accompaniment to it. The sketch of Andre' on the red velvet cloth is my favourite; he is like Aladdin on his magic carpet. The main characters of Roy's story are animals and it teaches us all, children and adults alike, a valuable lesson about love, friendship and caring for each other. I would love to curl up with this merry tale and spend my Christmas feeling good about myself and the wonderful world we live in. Come join Andre' in his journey and witness the miracle called Christmas with him and all his friends.Sulekha Rawat
