The Inner Chamber and the Inner Life: The Power of Gods Word, Revealed by Moses and Christ in the Bible (Hardcover)
Andrew Murray's classic guide to nurturing the inner spirit relates many inspiring spiritual stories, such as the life of the Prophet Moses and God's thoughts as dispensed by the Lord Jesus Christ. An all-embracing tour of Biblical profundity, The Inner Chamber and the Inner Life looks at a variety of Bible stories and incidents to show the reader how to be mindful of the essential teachings of God. The titular 'inner chambers' refer to the atmosphere in which the truest prayer takes place; it is by admitting ourselves to these regularly that we attain authentic 'inner life'. In writing this book, Murray aims to prepare and motivate the reader for this closer connection to the divine.Yet this book is not simply a devotional with an emphasis on prayer; it is a manual which discusses improving one's relationship with God. Keeping oneself mindful of the sacrifice and efforts of Jesus, and carrying out the virtues preached by the Son of God is paramount to gaining a closer bond with the force of the Lord.

This is the first volume to explicitly consider how leisure and tourism acts as a major focus by which power may be understood in a geographical context. Key thinking and major approaches to unravelling the complexities of power are outlined in this collection and their relevance to current and future tourism studies is discussed. Tourism, Power and Space blends theoretical perspectives from leading power theorists such as: Parsons, Foucault and Clegg. Exploring the intricacies of the relationships between power, tourism and leisure, this stimulating volume combines theoretical and empirical writings to illustrate the extent to which power, in its various forms and guises and at various scales of operation, impacts on the unfolding structures, practices and organization of tourism and leisure on both the demand and supply sides. Divided into three sections: Power, Performance And Practice, Power, Property And Resources and Power, Governance And Empowerment; this text will be a useful resource for students and academics alike.
Patronage, Power, and Masculinity in Medieval England
The book investigates a riveting, richly documented conflict from thirteenth-century England over church property and ecclesiastical patronage. Oliver Sutton, the bishop of Lincoln, and John St. John, a royal household knight, both used coveted papal provisions to bestow the valuable church of Thame to a familial clerical candidate (a nephew and son, respectively). Between 1292 and 1294 three people died over the right to possess this church benefice and countless others were attacked or publicly scorned during the conflict. More broadly, religious services were paralyzed, prized animals were mutilated, and property was destroyed. Ultimately, the king personally brokered a settlement because he needed his knight for combat. Employing a microhistorical approach, this book uses abundant episcopal, royal, and judicial records to reconstruct this complex story that exposes in vivid detail the nature and limits of episcopal and royal power and the significance and practical business of ecclesiastical benefaction. This volume will appeal to undergraduate and graduate students alike, particularly students in historical methods courses, medieval surveys, upper-division undergraduate courses, and graduate seminars. It would also appeal to admirers of microhistories and people interested in issues pertaining to gender, masculinity, and identity in the Middle Ages.

This book offers a nuanced and detailed examination of two of the most important current debates about contemporary Russia's international activity: is Moscow acting strategically or opportunistically, and should this be understood in regional or global terms? The book addresses core themes of Russian activity – military, energy and economic - but it offers an unusual multi-disciplinary analysis to these themes. Monaghan incorporates both regional and thematic specialist expertise to give a fresh perspective to each of these core themes.Underpinned by detailed analyses of the revolution in Russian geospatial capabilities and the establishment of a strategic planning foundation, the book includes chapters on military and maritime strategies, energy security and economic diversification and influence. This serves to highlight the connections between military and economic interests that shape and drive Russian strategy.
