Barns, Farms, and Rolling Hills of Chester County

Barns, Farms, and Rolling Hills of Chester County

Jerome M. Casey

Schiffer Publishing Ltd

sidottu
Find out what makes Chester County, Pennsylvania, worthy of a day trip, in this photographic journey from east to west, from sunrise to sunset, and in all four seasons. While some of the sights were captured along the main roads of this rural county, it's the fine-grained network of back roads that transports viewers back in time with their hidden gems: classic old barns, rolling hills, gravel lanes, and wind breaks memorializing a simpler way of life. The livestock that call these farms home are as diverse as the barns themselves, including horses, cows, sheep, and goats, not to mention Texas longhorn cattle, buffalo, bison, emu, and alpaca. The Radnor Hunt and other events are a testament to the area's commitment to preserving open space in an area of growing density on the outskirts of Philadelphia.

Barns of New York

Barns of New York

Cynthia G. Falk

Cornell University Press

Barns of New York explores and celebrates the agricultural and architectural diversity of the Empire State—from Long Island to Lake Erie, the Southern Tier to the North Country—providing a unique compendium of the vernacular architecture of rural New York. Through descriptions of the appearance and working of representative historic farm buildings, Barns of New York also serves as an authoritative reference for historic preservation efforts across the state. Cynthia G. Falk connects agricultural buildings—both extant examples and those long gone—with the products and processes they made and make possible. Great attention is paid not only to main barns but also to agricultural outbuildings such as chicken coops, smokehouses, and windmills. Falk further emphasizes the types of buildings used to support the cultivation of products specifically associated with the Empire State, including hops, apples, cheese, and maple syrup. Enhanced by more than two hundred contemporary and historic photographs and other images, this book provides historical, cultural, and economic context for understanding the rural landscape. In an appendix are lists of historic farm buildings open to the public at living history museums and historic sites. Through a greater awareness of the buildings found on farms throughout New York, readers will come away with an increased appreciation for the state's rich agricultural and architectural legacy.

On the Great Plains, a land barren of wood and rock for the traditional rail and stone fences, the wire fence was a logical invention. Hundreds of barded-wire designs were invented, and the more practical patents were manufactured and shipped west at great profit. Today collectors are carefully searching out that wire for both enjoyment and historical interest. This book was designed to provide a well-organized identifying, classifying, and cataloguing system for the many designs and variations of barded wire. Nearly one thousand drawings and three indexes to patents, inventors, and manufacturers provide an immediate means of identification.
Barns of the Midwest

For many, the barn is the symbol of the Midwestern United States. It represents tangible wealth, solid citizenship, industry, stability, and other agrarian values associated with its conservative, Anglo-Saxon settlers. Editors Noble and Wilhelm set out to examine these stereotypes. European settlement of the Midwest, though primarily English and German, was never homogenous and the character of the Midwest barn reflects this. As this collection shows, these barns draw on a rich blend of materials, values, and technologies from the Old World and the New, while at the same time leaving their identifiable mark on the American landscape.

Originally published in 1995, Barns of the Midwest is a masterful example of material cultural history. It arrived at a critical moment for the agricultural landscape. The 1980s were marked by farm foreclosures, rural bank failures, the continued rise of industrialized agriculture, and severe floods and droughts. These waves of disaster hastened the erosion of the idea of a pastoral Heartland knit together with small farms and rural values. And it wasn't just an idea that was eroded; material artifacts such as the iconic Midwestern barn were also rapidly wearing away. It was against this background that editors Noble and Wilhelm gathered noted experts in history and architecture to write on the nature and meaning of Midwestern barns, explaining why certain barns were built as they were, what types of barns appeared where, and what their functions were. Featuring a new introduction by Timothy G. Anderson, Barns of the Midwest is the definitive work on this ubiquitous but little studied architectural symbol of a region and its history.

Barns of New England

Barns of New England

Jeffrey E. Blackman

Countryman Press Inc.

Jeffrey Blackman follows his successful Covered Bridges of New England with this companion volume that highlights the iconic barns of the same region. Rather than being postcard-perfect, these photos depict the real life of New England and its farming community with the same keen eye that informed Blackman’s photos of abandoned gas pumps and pickup trucks in Out of Gas. New England barns are icons; unlike barns of other regions, they possess a unique character and a special vernacular. Often hewn from trees cleared when the farms were first established, these barns were built to reflect and accommodate the needs of each different farm. Working farms in the sometimes harsh, always beautiful New England countryside now seem to be a vanishing species, and so the New England barn is also vanishing. If you remember what it was like to take a road trip as a child, how exciting it was to turn a corner and suddenly spy a beautiful red barn in a lush green pasture, you will appreciate this collection. It’s a bit of New England’s best to enjoy anytime, no matter where you are.
Barns of Summers County: West Virginia Heritage

Barns of Summers County: West Virginia Heritage

For centuries barns served many functions: housing for animals, storage for equipment, and graineries. Farmers threshed grain on barn floors, stored hay for feeding livestock in lofts, and sheltered animals in stalls. To farmers, barns were as essential as the houses they lived in. To many barns represent tradition, hard work and independence. These associations are just as much a part of the barn as its framework and its roofing. The barn was also the heart of the farm and a vital center of community life. It was a place for dancing, praying, and a place for children to play. For Summers County, West Virginia, the vernacular structures were recalled and a "barn raisin" ensued. The objective of the project was not to raise the sides of a building......but to help raise awareness of the importance of preservation of our barns, the history of our people as well as our libraries.

Meet Boris--a gentle robot equipped with curiosity, ingenuity, and the ability to mix the perfect martini. Designed as an integral part of a "house of the future" known as ZUkUnfthaus, this recreation specialist finds his programming insufficient when the future is different than expected. Boris distracts himself from anxieties through dancing, cocktails, costumes, pillow fights and road trips. BORIS: ROBOT OF LEISURE is a graphic novel that blends retro-futuristic science fiction, mid-century cocktail culture and silent comedy into a timely and surprisingly human story of one robot's pursuit of happiness and fulfillment. Set in our post-atomic age, BORIS: ROBOT OF LEISURE reflects the reality of the early 21st century--society has abandoned space-age novelties like robot helpers and fully automated homes, leaving Boris and his ZUkUnfthaus as relics from an unrealized future. The world of The Jetsons never came to pass. But then, Boris has more fun than their maid Rosie ever did.
