War and Pieces: 'Muddling My Way Through Life's Mysteries'
A poignant story of the adventures of a happy-go-lucky child growing up in the wake of World War II, with the growing realization of her own deep shame at being a German. It is told in the unique voice and perspective of a little German girl as she grows into a young woman and learns about the Nazis, befriends her first Jews, and discovers, in a very personal way, the truth about the Lebensborn children, Hitler's top-secret breeding program. Her eager zest for life and her burgeoning sexuality balance out her somber and heartfelt struggle to understand what it means to be German in a post-WWII era.

In 1939 all German Jews had to become members of a newly founded Reich Association. The Jewish functionaries of this organization were faced with circumstances and events that forced them to walk a fine line between responsible action and collaboration. They had hoped to support mass emigration, mitigate the consequences of the anti-Jewish measures, and take care of the remaining community. When the Nazis forbade emigration and started mass deportations in 1941, the functionaries decided to cooperate to prevent the “worst.” In choosing to cooperate, they came into direct opposition with the interests of their members, who were then deported. In June 1943 all unprotected Jews were deported along with their representatives, and the so-called intermediaries supplied the rest of the community, which consisted of Jews living in mixed marriages. The study deals with the tasks of these men, the fate of the Jews in mixed marriages, and what happened to the survivors after the war.

Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) is a much-talked about term in the transportation industry and in transport policy. The goal of MaaS is a shift away from personally-owned modes of transportation and towards mobility solutions that are consumed as a service. Such solutions are typically enabled by digital technologies and platforms. MaaS systems might combine transportation services from public and private transportation providers, like train and carsharing services, through a unified portal to create and manage journeys, which users can pay for with a single account. MaaS offers travellers mobility solutions based on their travel needs. The purpose of this book is to take stock of recent trends and developments in MaaS, and so provide readers with an overview of progress, challenges, opportunities, and the likely future direction of the field. The book begins by addressing the history of MaaS and its defining principles, then explores enabling technologies and business models. The different opportunities and challenges of implementing MaaS are examined for urban and rural areas and for regional travel. The challenge of integration is discussed, followed by the role of MaaS in different spheres of transportation, including mass transit, shared transport, demand responsive transport, and active travel. The role of mobility hubs is also reviewed. The final chapters of the book cover policy and regulation, and the likely future outlook and next steps for MaaS. The book is written by two knowledgeable consultants with substantial experience in delivering and supporting future mobility projects. The authors have drawn deeply on their expertise and connections in the field to provide a wealth of case-studies, which illustrate real-world applications of MaaS. Covering the principles, enabling technologies and business models behind MaaS, this book provides a systematic and thorough overview of the field for researchers, consultants, industry professionals, transport operators and policy makers.

The extraordinary talents of some people with autism are well-documented, yet little is understood about the nature of their gifts. Drawing on 20 years of research, Beate Hermelin describes not just what autistic savants do, but how they do it. During her studies she and her collaborators examined savants alongside neurotypical individuals talented in the same domain, as well as people with the same level of intelligence as the savants but with no special abilities. In her fascinating and highly informative book she describes her investigations into the nature of the talents of savants who are gifted at poetry, foreign language acquisition, the visual arts, music, and calendar and numerical calculations. The work of a scholar but immensely readable, Bright Splinters of the Mind is not only a thorough exploration of autistic gifts, it is also a book which reaches radical conclusions on the very nature of talent and its relationship to intelligence.

The Henry Bradshaw Society's policy of presenting integral editions of rare liturgical manuscripts is a reflection of the fact that, before the invention of printing, service books varied widely from country to country, from church to church, and even from individual book to individual book, with the result that surviving medieval liturgical manuscripts are usually unique entities which can profitably be studies as a reflection of the local circumstances (and frequently of the particular individuals) which produced them. This is especially true in the case of private prayerbooks, where each manuscript embodies the interests and spiritual concerns of the patron who commissioned it or the scribe who compiled and copies it. The present edition of 'Ælfwine's Prayerbook' (which was originally produced as a doctoral dissertation under the supervision of Professor Helmut Gneuss, one of the Society's distinguishedVice-Presidents), by Beate Günzel, is a splendid manifestation of the intellectual and spiritual interests of a dean who serves the community of the New Minster in Winchester during the first half of the eleventh century, and hence of the clear light which liturgical manuscripts can shed on the literary culture of later Anglo-Saxon England. It was is issued to members for the year 1992.

Beate Sigriddaughter has dedicated this collection of poetry to Xanthippe, the "not exactly beloved" wife of the revered philosopher Socrates. Xanthippe's name was used for a long time as a synonym for "shrew." Sigriddaughter says that, having lived "for many years among wise and also unwise men, I want to honor her memory, together with the memory of all women, sung or unsung, who have bravely made and continue to make their way through this complicated existence of questionable attitudes with grace and rage and sadness and joy."

Beate Sigriddaughter's Dancing in Santa Fe and other poems will make you remember what it is to be alive in this world. Insightful, rewarding poetry. Skillfully balanced between facing the ominous facts in world news and her enthusiasm for the spirit and beauty in her surroundings, Beate Sigriddaughter's short collection is filled with clear-sightedness. The title poem brilliantly juxtaposes an inherited German history with her current New Mexico situation filled with affection and natural wonders. These pages are for all who seek something both uplifting and realistic; a lyrical wisdom that acknowledges a debt to fairy tales spanning light and darkness. -David Chorlton, author of Reading T. S. Emily meanders through everyday experiences as a slightly detached witness to the acknowledged beauty of her world and also to its huge disillusionments, misunderstandings, and betrayals. At times even desire fades in the face of tiredness of trying to understand. Wanting to be noble and often wanting to please those around her through compliance with their wishes, she constantly runs into snags. Too early for anyone's taste she begins to question God and her own role in the world, as well as the role of others, especially women, around her. She is troubled by uneasy relationships with other people, notably men. They seem to not just be on different wavelengths, but as though swimming in different oceans altogether, and the connections appear to be elusive. Nothing is ever quite as she expected or hoped for or planned. Fundamentally, however, she is not given to despair, but instead to gratitude for the irrevocable and undeniable beauty of the world.

These are stories longing for peace. All are told from a female point of view. The stories are divided into three sections: hostility out in the world, domestic difficulties, and a few new takes on fairy tales. Stories out in the world include reflections of a goddess observing a young man dying, Mary Magdalen mourning Jesus, an older German woman wanting to hide away from the world after World War II, and a young girl liking an outsider peace demonstator while she is part of a right to life demonstration, among others. The domestic stories deal with neglect, child abuse, fear of being pregnant, and similar complications. The fairy tales all mourn a certain loss of magic in our world.
