The Chief Works Of Benedict De Spinoza V1: Introduction, Tractatus Theologico-Politicus, Tractatus Politicus
The Chief Works of Benedict de Spinoza Volume 1 is a collection of three of the most important works by the renowned Dutch philosopher Benedict de Spinoza. The book begins with an introduction that provides an overview of Spinoza's life and philosophical contributions. The first work included in the collection is the Tractatus Theologico-Politicus, which was originally published anonymously in 1670. The book is a critical analysis of the Bible and the role of religion in society. Spinoza argues that the Bible is a product of its time and that its teachings should not be taken literally. He also advocates for the separation of church and state, arguing that religious institutions should not have political power. The second work in the collection is the Tractatus Politicus, which was also published anonymously in 1677. This book is a political treatise that explores the nature of government and the relationship between the state and the individual. Spinoza argues that the purpose of government is to protect the rights of its citizens and that the state should be based on reason rather than tradition or religion.Overall, The Chief Works of Benedict de Spinoza Volume 1 is an essential read for anyone interested in philosophy, politics, and religion. Spinoza's ideas continue to influence modern thought and his works remain relevant today. This Is A New Release Of The Original 1889 Edition. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. The present collection of writings includes all the most critical works of Spinoza, including the Theologico-Political Treatise, the Political Treatise, the Ethics, "On the Improvement of the Understanding", and a collection of Spinoza's Correspondence. It was originally published as two volumes in 1884, and is here reformatted into a single volume. From the Introduction: "Spinoza conceived as a vast unity all existence actual and possible; indeed, between actual and possible he recognizes no distinction, for, if a thing does not exist, there must be some cause which prevents its existing, or in other words renders it impossible. This unity he terms indifferently Substance or God, and the first part of the Ethics is devoted to expounding its nature. Being the sum of existence, it is necessarily infinite (for there is nothing external to itself to make it finite), and it can be the cause of an infinite number of results. It must necessarily operate in absolute freedom, for there is nothing by which it can be controlled; but none the less necessarily it must operate in accordance with eternal and immutable laws, fulfilling the perfection of its own nature."

Saint Benedict's Rule-a set of guidelines that has governed Christian monastic life since the sixth century-continues to fascinate laypeople and monastics alike. Buddhist monks and nuns have been intrigued by Benedict's insights into human nature and by the similarities between Christian and Buddhist traditions. Now, through personal anecdotes and thoughtful comparison, four prominent Buddhist scholars reveal how the wisdom of each tradition can revitalize the other. Theirs is a lively and compelling dialogue which will appeal not only to Buddhists and Christians, but to anyone interested in rediscovering the value of an ancient discipline in the modern world.

Benedict XVI is an extraordinary presentation of the first five years of Benedict's leadership as pope. The book provides an unprecedented look into the life and work of the Holy Father, with images that show him both in formal, public appearances and in intimate moments alone and with others. Elegantly designed and produced, the book features more than 100 brilliant full-color photos that illustrate the Pope's international travels and meetings with world leaders, as well as his contact with lay Catholics and moments of personal study or contemplation. Essays by the staff of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops explore key themes of Benedict's papacy, including his work on environmental issues and in the Middle East, and personal reflections from friends and church leaders reveal his profoundly human side. The book also features excerpts from Benedict's own writings and an essential resource section. Benedict XVI is an invaluable keepsake and resource for Catholics, spiritual seekers, and those interested in how Catholicism touches the world today.
Benedict XVI Rethinking Africa: Tasks for Today
Savvy ecclesial observers recognize that in the great moral debates of the age African Catholics remain committed to the Gospel. Readers will welcome this volume in order to understand better the Church in Africa. So much of the future of the Church universal will be marked by African contributions to theology and mission. These essays are essential reading for those interested in learning about that future. -- Rev. Ryan Connors, St. John's Seminary, Boston MA No small part of the global Catholic future depends on the dynamic orthodoxy, evangelical zeal, and impact on society of the Church in Africa. This important volume explains why, amidst darkening confusions throughout the world Church and immense social and political challenges at home, African Catholic theology in the spirit of Benedict XVI is a bright, guiding star. -- George Weigel, Distinguished Senior Fellow and William E. Simon Chair in Catholic Studies Ethics and Public Policy Center What St. Augustine was to North Africa in the ancient Church, his latter-day disciple, Benedict XVI, may well be for Africa in the 21st century. The pastors and scholars of this volume deftly apply Ratzingerian principles to the challenges of politics, economics, and culture facing the continent that is the growing edge of Catholicism. I highly recommend this volume to anyone interested in the future of African Christianity. -- James Massa, Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn and Rector, St. Joseph's Seminary in New York
