The monumental struggle fought against Imperial Japan in the Asia/Pacific theater during World War II is primarily viewed as an American affair. While the United States did play a dominant role, the British and Commonwealth forces also made major contributions – on land, at sea and in the air – eventually involving over a million men and vast armadas of ships and aircraft. It was a difficult and often desperate conflict fought against a skilled and ruthless enemy that initially saw the British suffer the worst series of defeats ever to befall their armed forces. Still, the British persevered and slowly turned the tables on their Japanese antagonists. Fighting over an immense area that stretched from India in the west to the Solomon Islands in the east and Australia in the south to the waters off Japan in the north, British and Commonwealth forces eventually scored a string of stirring victories that avenged their earlier defeats and helped facilitate the demise of the Japanese Empire. Often overlooked by history, this substantial war effort is fully explored in Forgotten War. Meticulously researched, the book provides a complete, balanced and detailed account of the role that British and Commonwealth forces played on land, sea and in the air during this crucial struggle. It also provides unique analysis regarding the effectiveness and relevance of this collective effort and the contributions it made to the overall Allied victory.

The British army emerged from World War I as the world’s premier fighting force. This same army, following two decades of government neglect, entered World War II pitifully small compared to its main rivals and wholly unprepared for the tasks at hand. Despite its sorry state of readiness, the army dutifully went forward to confront enemies of the British realm as it had done so many times before. Soon, it would be fully engaged in a global conflict against three powerful adversaries—the armed forces of Germany, Italy and Japan. During the war, the British army, along with its Imperial and Commonwealth counterparts, expanded from a force of only a few hundred thousand men to a cumulative strength of over eight million men and 110 field divisions, of which 70 saw combat during the conflict. Suffering a number of early defeats—including in France, Greece, Malaya and at Tobruk—this collective force slowly turned the tide against its Axis assailants. Fighting over an immense area that included Europe, Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Southwest Pacific, the British and Commonwealth armies eventually scored a string of stirring victories that avenged their earlier defeats and helped facilitate the demise of the Axis powers. The sheer scope of this accomplishment is reflected in the fact that, during the duration of the war, the British and Commonwealth armies inflicted a staggering four million casualties upon their Axis opponents for a cost to themselves of less than a quarter of this number. In this groundbreaking new book, Brian E. Walter provides a complete, balanced and detailed account of the contributions made by the British and Commonwealth armies during World War II. The product of over 30 years of meticulous research and analysis, the book is the quintessential, single-volume source on this topic. It provides a comprehensive history of all the major actions in all theatres carried out by the British and Commonwealth armies, both well-known and obscure, and provides unique analysis regarding the effectiveness and relevance of the army’s performance.

Deliverance Through the Window Of My Mind
Sentient, yet imprisoned by self-gratification to a disabling substance that led to an abnormal mindset, author Brian Dixon arrived at an unintended location and was held captive longer than expected. Feeling like a king dethroned, he panted for the water of life to be repositioned on the throne provisioned by God. In Deliverance through the Window of My Mind, Dixon shares snapshots of his life, from his birth to the present day. He focuses on his addiction to crack cocaine and how it was God who held him through all the trauma and pain. In receiving God's gifts of mercy, grace, and forgiveness, Dixon has tears of gratitude that left permanent tracks to be seen by all, his loved ones, and the people he meets in addiction to a substance or mindset. In Deliverance through the Window of My Mind, he visualizes what he'd like to see even if it doesn't turn out exactly as he envisions. Dixon communicates that love is the cure for all spiritual ailments known to mankind. If you're struggling, just know you're capable of overcoming any obstacle hindering your journey to self-actualization, with God on your side.
The Kenotic Organization: A Community of Leadership, Learning, and Transformation
Although organizations frequently proclaim the desire for change, renewal and transformation, few ever fully embrace those ideas, failing to rise above more than mere mediocrity and never realizing even a fraction of their true potential. Certainly, many pontificate on the nature of organizations as they live and breathe, so to speak; yet, few question how the organization ought to be. This ought belies the existential and ethical dimensions of organizing and, as such, points to a discipline not often associated with the organizational realm-theology. To this end, the concept of the kenotic organization offers a much-needed antidote to the syndrome described above. Drawing on the divine Trinitarian kenosis observed in the creation event and witnessed in the Incarnation, the simultaneous actions of self-limiting and pouring out inform the organizational cause and expose a deeply entangled organizational mesh enveloping the entire cosmos which can serve as a catalyst to excite preferred organizational behaviors. It is, in fact, the humility of Trinitarian kenosis, the willingness to withdraw but also at once pour out the individual essence, that generates the thrust necessary to escape the gravitational pull of convention which typical inhibits organizational flourishing.

Before it was written there were a wide variety of views about the end of time held across different Jewish movements. Historically there have been four main methods of interpretation in both Judaism and Christianity, of which we see all on display in the New Testament. The controversy around interpretation of prophecy existed in the days of Jesus, led some to reject Christ, was not resolved by the Protestant Reformers, and still divides our churches today. This book looks at how we got here and proposes a way we should all move forward together. Using only the Scriptures, the sola scriptura approach challenges us to understand what the original audience of the letter from John would have understood. By identifying singularities and parallels within the book, built from years of research and verse-by-verse exegetical study, we will see how it is the fulfillment of the hopes and expectations of the Hebrew prophets and the early church.

Death by Fire and Ice tells the little-known story of the sinking of the steamboat Lexington on Long Island Sound in January 1840. Built in 1835 by Cornelius Vanderbilt, the Lexington left Manhattan bound for Stonington, Connecticut, at four o'clock in the afternoon on a bitterly cold day carrying an estimated one hundred forty-seven passengers and crew and a cargo of, among other things, baled cotton. After making her way up an ice-encrusted East River and into Long Island Sound, she caught fire off Eaton's Neck on Long Island's north shore at approximately seven o'clock. The fire quickly ignited the cotton stowed on board. With the crew unable to extinguish the fire, the blaze burned through the ship's wheel and tiller ropes, rendering the ship unmanageable. Soon after, the engine died, and the blazing ship drifted aimlessly in the Sound away from shore with the prevailing wind and current. As the night wore on, the temperature plummeted, reaching nineteen degrees below zero. With no hope of rescue on the dark horizon, the forlorn passengers and crew faced a dreadful decision: remain on board and perish in the searing flames or jump overboard and succumb within minutes to the Sound's icy waters. By three o'clock in the morning the grisly ordeal was over for all but one passenger and three members of the crew--the only ones who survived. The tragedy remains the worst maritime disaster in the history of Long Island Sound. Within days, the New York City Coroner convened an inquest to determine the cause of the disaster. After two weeks of testimony, reported daily in the New York City press, the inquest jury concluded that the Lexington had been permitted to operate on the Sound "at the imminent risk of the lives and property" of its passengers, and that, had the crew acted appropriately, the fire could have been extinguished and a large portion, if not all, of the passengers saved. The public's reaction to the verdict was scathing: the press charged that the members of the board of directors of the Transportation Company, which had purchased the Lexington from Commodore Vanderbilt in 1839, were guilty of murder and should be indicted. Calls were immediately made for Congress to enact legislation to improve passenger safety on steamboats. This book explores the ongoing debate in Congress during the nineteenth century over its power to regulate steamboat safety; and it examines the balance Congress struck between the need to insulate the nation's shipping industry from ruinous liability for lost cargo, while at the same time greatly enhancing passenger safety on the nation's steamboats.

Abraham Lincoln recognized that the US Civil War would be a "hard war". Secession and slavery represented abiding beliefs central to Southern life. Overcoming them would require a war of attrition resulting in much death and destruction, but Lincoln knew that the populous industrial North would prevail in a war of "grim mathematics". He hoped that in George McClellan he had found the general to wage this war.McClellan, though young and bright, was not up to the task. Early in his tenure, he showed that he could organize a large army, but month upon month of inaction followed. McClellan politically favored preserving the Union for mercantile reasons, but slavery was a matter for the states to decide and therefore, negotiable. Reunion, he felt, did not require abolition. McClellan had talents as an organizer but could not bring himself "pull the trigger" on a decisive battle. Lincoln was finally able to coerce McClellan into proposing the Peninsular Campaign in the spring of 1862. The plan called for a massive amphibious operation which would deposit an army on the doorstep of Richmond and force a Confederate surrender. Lincoln did not like a plan as risky and costly as this, but reluctantly agreed.McClellan endangered the success of his plan by avoiding direct engagement with the enemy and working his way up the peninsula at a snail's pace. He lost the confidence and support of many of his subordinate generals. Phil Kearny was particularly aggrieved as he espoused a hard war and continuing contact with the enemy. After months of battles and squandered opportunities, McClellan ordered a retreat. His generals administered a final defeat to the Confederates at Malvern Hill but still were forced to withdraw to Harrison's Landing where they were unable to generate further offensive operations.McClellan had misused and betrayed the Army of the Potomac and failed to capitalize on their bravery and competence. His betrayal had only begun...
