Sir Charles James Fox Bunbury (1809–86), the distinguished botanist and geologist, corresponded regularly with Lyell, Horner, Darwin and Hooker among others, and helped them in identifying botanical fossils. He was active in the scientific societies of his time, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1851. This nine-volume edition of his letters and diaries was published privately by his wife Frances Horner and her sister Katherine Lyell between 1890 and 1893. His copious journal and letters give an unparalleled view of the scientific and cultural society of Victorian England, and of the impact of Darwin's theories on his contemporaries. Volume 6 covers the years 1869–72. Bunbury was less active in scientific matters than before, but still reading copiously, carrying on a busy social life, and developing the gardens of his home in Suffolk. There are many comments on current affairs and politics.

With advancing age there are many notices of deaths or illnesses of friends or colleagues, such as Sedgwick, Agassiz and Lyell, but Bunbury was still enthusiastically discussing his reading with correspondents.

Bunbury's health was declining, but he kept up his journal- and letter-writing (although many of his contemporaries had predeceased him), and had many visitors. The volume ends with tributes written by his many friends.
Dead Souls (Translated by C. J. Hogarth with an Introduction by John Cournos)
First published in 1842, "Dead Souls" is the story of Chichikov, a young middle-class gentleman who comes to a small town in Russia with a dubious plan to improve his wealth and position in life. He begins by spending beyond his means on the premise that he can impress the local officials and gain standing and connections in the community. At the heart of his plan is the idea of acquiring "dead souls" or more explicitly serfs of landowners who have died since the last census. Since the taxes of landowners are based upon the number of serfs that they employ, Chichikov believes that the landowners will be all too happy to part with these "dead souls". Legend has it that Gogol supposedly produced a third part to the novel which he destroyed shortly before his death. Despite ending in mid-sentence and with portions from the second part which seem to be missing it is generally accepted that the novel is extant. A satirical gem, Gogol's "Dead Souls" exemplifies his particular gift of exhibiting the true failings of humanity in all their absurdity. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper, is translated by C. J. Hogarth, and includes an introduction by John Cournos.

Madam C. J. Walker was a self-made millionaire who was beloved within her community for her philanthropy, and respected as a first rate business person. She was America's first female self-made millionaire. Madam C. J. Walker is now the subject of the Netflix min-series Self Made based on the adult biography also by the A'Lelia Bundles. Born Sarah Breedlove, she was the first person born free in her family. She married Charles Joseph Walker and became known as Madam C. J. Walker, the name she would later use on her hair care products. After talking with her brothers, who were barbers, and experiencing problems with hair loss, she developed a formula that healed scalp infections. This inspired her to start her own line of hair care products to do things like reduce dandruff, grow longer hair, smooth hair, or prevent baldness. Her company employed thousands of door-to-door saleswomen from all over the United States and the Caribbean.
