Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF 2018ONE OF THE ECONOMIST'S BOOKS OF THE YEAR"My new favorite book of all time." --Bill Gates If you think the world is coming to an end, think again: people are living longer, healthier, freer, and happier lives, and while our problems are formidable, the solutions lie in the Enlightenment ideal of using reason and science. By the author of the new book, Rationality. Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? In this elegant assessment of the human condition in the third millennium, cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, which play to our psychological biases. Instead, follow the data: In seventy-five jaw-dropping graphs, Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise, not just in the West, but worldwide. This progress is not the result of some cosmic force. It is a gift of the Enlightenment: the conviction that reason and science can enhance human flourishing. Far from being a na ve hope, the Enlightenment, we now know, has worked. But more than ever, it needs a vigorous defense. The Enlightenment project swims against currents of human nature--tribalism, authoritarianism, demonization, magical thinking--which demagogues are all too willing to exploit. Many commentators, committed to political, religious, or romantic ideologies, fight a rearguard action against it. The result is a corrosive fatalism and a willingness to wreck the precious institutions of liberal democracy and global cooperation. With intellectual depth and literary flair, Enlightenment Now makes the case for reason, science, and humanism: the ideals we need to confront our problems and continue our progress.

This book critically analyzes the Palestinian legal arguments against Israeli occupation and in favor of Palestinian statehood. For the past two decades, Palestinians have chosen to pursue their claims against the Israeli occupation through litigation at the international courts. It is therefore appropriate, the author contends, to analyze the merits of the Palestinian legal claims separately from their political claims. To do so, the book comprises five parts:Part I addresses the role of international law in the conflict as well as Palestinian legal framing and lawfare.Part II recounts the relevant legal history, including the crucial legal implications of the Oslo Accords.Part III analyzes Palestinian legal claims regarding the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.Part IV assesses the Palestinian legal case for statehood.Part V analyzes Palestinian legal claims regarding Jerusalem.Ultimately, it is argued that the Palestinian legal case is weak even though the two-state solution continues to represent the most viable long-term political outcome to the conflict. Moreover, the author suggests that Palestinian leaders have repeatedly opted for conflict perpetuation through lawfare and violence, rather than conflict resolution through negotiation.Providing fresh insights into the claims and counterclaims of Palestinian legal arguments, the book will appeal broadly to anyone interested in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and international law.

Regional Innovation Potential: The Case of the U.S. Machine Tool Industry
This title was first published in 2000: Steven Nivin analyzes a process vital to economic development - technological change. He furthers understanding of the processes driving innovation, so that we may gain a deeper insight into the development of economies. Specifically, the study explores the concept of innovation potential and the factors that result in variations in innovation potential across metropolitan areas, using the US machine tool industry as a case study. To provide a comparison, the same models are also estimated for the semiconductor industry. The findings indicate that urbanisation economies, localization economies, human capital, universities, and invention-derived knowledge are significant factors. The study assesses the contributions of three different skill levels of human capital; college-educated, graduate degree, and locally produced PhD’s in mechanical and electrical engineering. Only the graduate and PhD degree measures are found to be significant, indicating the importance of having a highly skilled pool of labour within the region. The influences of the factors appear to be similar across industries, with some slight differences. The transfer of knowledge through patents is also studied. It is found that the transmission of this knowledge is slower between different industries, relative to the transmission within the same industry.

Price Dumbbells applies the concept of coarse graining from statistical mechanics to the analysis of financial markets. As examples it is applied to an analysis of long term & short term bond markets as presented by mutual funds. The analysis is not meant to advance the efforts of traders and speculators to enrich themselves through market trades but instead to identify the fundamental mechanisms operating underneath market transactions. Its goal is to teach both the students and practitioners of finance the proper way to formulate an analytical systems approach while still retaining the ability to apply the analysis to real, not fictitious, markets.

Nearly 7 out of 10 Americans are overweight. Nearly 4 out of 10 Americans are obese. By 2030, 9 out of 10 Americans will be overweight. There's a fast food establishment on every corner. We wrap burgers in bacon and tacos in waffles. The average gym member exercises 17 times a year. We spend nearly 11 hours a day in front of screens. The fitness and nutrition industry is growing nearly 20% year over year but it still can't keep up with the growth of our waistlines. Success does not lie in a diet pill, or a fad diet. It lies within you. It lies within your habits and proclivities. You do not need a gluten free diet, you need a glutton free diet. In Glutton Free: The Case for Fitness in the 21st Century I will explain how we got here, why is it a greater economic burden than we realize, and what we might be able to do to shift the tides in the other direction. Glutton Free is a paradigm shift, and I'm asking you to join me.
