Upon the graduation of her precocious daughter, long-time single mother Jennifer Landrie recognizes the opportunity she has been longing for. She can now open her very own coffee shop, knowing her employer and best friend Hank Larson will stand behind her. The plan is in motion-that is, until she sets a menu in front of a striking young contractor. When Geoff Armistad flips off his tortoise-shell glasses, Jennifer is immediately dragged into echoes of the past. With eyes as laser-blue as her late husband's, Geoff represents more questions than answers. Furthermore, when feelings blossom for Hank-who may never abandon the memory of his deceased wife-Jennifer finds herself burdened by past grief and future hopes alike. As Geoff is contracted to help with the renovation of Jennifer's coffee shop, Jen's Place on Fourth Street could be the sanctuary of healing each of them needs, if only they would let it.

Too Many Cookies is based on my sister, Cheryl, who decided to bring me cookies every day for almost a year. I would share them with everyone in our apartment building, young and old, and the homeless that I met outside our building. It is about sharing and caring-not how much you have but how much you can give to others in need. Enjoy

Cats Don't FartRight In Your FaceDogs Will FartAll Over The Place. This story is a tribute to my beautiful, kind, and very polite Gray Tabby: Stanley "Cup" Frank. He had a tummyache and nothing was making him feel better. I looked at him and thought, If only you could fart, that might help. Then I thought of our hilarious English Springer Spaniel Dog Child, Casey Goofy Hector Protector Gugenheimer Frank, who was the King of Farts. He would sprawl across our coffee table in a crowded room and let out farts like sonic booms. On a scale of 1 to 10, he scored a billion. Everyone would run out of the room covering their noses and gasping for air. There are differences between cats and dogs and we love them all. Just another example: Cats will circle their foodAnd give you THAT LOOKIf they don't like itDogs will sniff anythingOn the groundAnd bite it.

Animalia Americana

Animalia Americana

Colleen Glenney Boggs

Columbia University Press
2013
sidottu
Colleen Glenney Boggs puts animal representation at the center of the making of the liberal American subject. Concentrating on the formative and disruptive presence of animals in the writings of Frederick Douglass, Edgar Allan Poe, and Emily Dickinson, Boggs argues that animals are critical to the ways in which Americans enact their humanity and regulate subjects in the biopolitical state. Biopower, or a politics that extends its reach to life, thrives on the strategic ambivalence between who is considered human and what is judged as animal. It generates a space of indeterminacy in which animal representations intervene to define and challenge the parameters of subjectivity. The renegotiation of the species line produces a tension that is never fully regulated. Therefore, as both figures of radical alterity and the embodiment of biopolitics, animals are simultaneously exceptional and exemplary to the biopolitical state. An original contribution to animal studies, American studies, critical race theory, and posthumanist inquiry, Boggs thrillingly reinterprets a long and highly contentious human-animal history.

Readers of all ages will be in raptures with Cokkels in her magical, faierie-fantasy world as she stumbles through life dealing with villainy, treachery, deceit and jealousy on the one hand, and political intrigue and mysterious, legendary dark faierie lore between her family and their long-time enemies on the other. Her lessons in life are sometimes brutally sad (even terrifying); but often times naively comical, too.
Sleeping with the Moon

Sleeping with the Moon

Colleen J. McElroy

University of Illinois Press
2007
nidottu
PEN Oakland National Literary Award, 2008 Colleen J. McElroy's poetry shoots for the moon, and takes it in, too, in one way after another. The collection's award-winning poems animate women's experiences of sex, shopping, and dancing, while offering telling insight into the struggles and silver lining of lust, love, illness, and aging. Rich with vivid imagery and candid storytelling, Sleeping with the Moon takes readers on moonlit adventures under the night sky, through the barroom's smoky haze, and under the covers. ...Beware: such delicate sights have driven more than one woman to despair instead she watched him breathe-- relishing for a moment that secret space where night grows soft and the moon's detumescence forgives-- and where if this jeweled light holds they might strip themselves of years if only for one night --from "In Praise of Older Women"
Detroit's Cold War

Detroit's Cold War

Colleen Doody

University of Illinois Press
2017
nidottu
Detroit's Cold War locates the roots of American conservatism in a city that was a nexus of labor and industry in postwar America. Drawing on meticulous archival research focusing on Detroit, Colleen Doody shows how conflict over business values and opposition to labor, anticommunism, racial animosity, and religion led to the development of a conservative ethos in the aftermath of World War II. Using Detroit--with its large population of African-American and Catholic immigrant workers, strong union presence, and starkly segregated urban landscape--as a case study, Doody articulates a nuanced understanding of anticommunism during the Red Scare. Looking beyond national politics, she focuses on key debates occurring at the local level among a wide variety of common citizens. In examining this city's social and political fabric, Doody illustrates that domestic anticommunism was a cohesive, multifaceted ideology that arose less from Soviet ideological incursion than from tensions within the American public.
