Try to describe light and it's hopeless/ Nothing can quite catch in words luminous nothingness/ Hold something up in light and it's revealed in it say a/ miniature Easter Island head now brought out in its/ full strangeness by the surrounding illumination/ But how can you hold up something like light in light and hope to achieve/ the thing the flash the flat surrounding splashy airiness of brightness/ in whose beneficence everything/ including us is revealed?...

We live in a most challenging time. Many of us struggle, emotionally, ethically, and spiritually. We seem headed toward less compassion and consideration, failing to overcome that basic instinct that often leads to evil in human behavior--self-preservation at all costs. Yet within each of us a new future is stirring. We can become better people and build a better world by opting for good over evil--one choice at a time.In The Constant Choice, Peter Georgescu offers a gripping narrative of his journey from childhood captivity in a Romanian labor camp to his role as CEO of the world-renowned advertising agency Young & Rubicam. His traumatic youth--his parents' exile from their homeland, his grandfather's murder in prison, his neighbors' betrayal of one another--led to a lifelong struggle to grasp humanity's moral nature. Despite his conviction when he arrived on American soil that he had reached the land of the good, he discovered a more subtle evil at work all around him. Yet he also thrived through the generosity of one benefactor after another. Goodness, he found, isn't inherent; it evolves from daily choice.Through decades of reflection on human behavior, as well as philosophical and spiritual exploration, Peter arrived at a new perspective on the significance of our habitual choices. Every decision we make alters our biological nature, for better or worse--a model that has been confirmed by recent science. The Constant Choice reveals a path for changing who we are and the future of humanity. It's up to each of us to become activists for good.

Reads like a crazed cross between Watership Down and Nineteen Eighty-Four.--The Guardian Every book of Fforde's seems to be a cause for celebration. -- Charles Yu, The New York Times Book Review on Early Riser A new stand-alone novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Early Riser and the Thursday Next series England, 2022. There are 1.2 million human-size rabbits living in the UK. They wear clothes and can walk, talk and drive cars, the result of an inexplicable Spontaneous Anthropomorphizing Event fifty-five years earlier. A family of rabbits is about to move into Much Hemlock, a cozy little village in Middle England where life revolves around summer fetes, jam making, gossipy corner stores, and the oh-so-important Spick & Span awards for the best-kept village. No sooner have the rabbits arrived than the villagers decide they must depart, citing their propensity to burrow and breed, and their shameless levels of veganism. But Mrs Constance Rabbit is made of sterner stuff, and she and her family decide they are to stay. Unusually, their neighbors--longtime resident Peter Knox and his daughter, Pippa--decide to stand with them . . . and soon discover that you can be a friend to rabbits or to humans, but not both. With a blossoming romance, acute cultural differences, enforced rehoming to a MegaWarren in Wales and the full power of the ruling United Kingdom Anti-Rabbit Party against them, Peter and Pippa are about to question everything they had ever thought about their friends, their nation, and their species. An inimitable blend of satire, fantasy and thriller, The Constant Rabbit is the latest dazzlingly original foray into Jasper Fforde's ever-astonishing creative genius.

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Thursday Next series comes "a political satire cloaked in Fforde's trademark bizarre whimsy . . . that] reads like a crazed cross between Watership Down and Nineteen Eighty-Four" (The Guardian). "Playful, biting, and timely, this is a must-read."--Publishers Weekly, starred review England, 2022. There are 1.2 million human-size rabbits living in the UK. They can walk, talk, and drive cars, the result of an inexplicable Spontaneous Anthropomorphizing Event fifty-five years earlier. A family of rabbits is about to move into Much Hemlock, a cozy little village where life revolves around summer fetes, jam making, gossipy corner stores, and the oh-so-important Spick & Span awards for the best-kept village. Citing imaginary threats of overbreeding and a radical vegan agenda, the villagers decide the rabbits must go, and soon. But the Rabbit family aren't easily moved--and strike up an unlikely alliance with neighbor Peter Knox, who knew Mrs. Rabbit three decades earlier at university. With the ruling United Kingdom Anti-Rabbit Party's plans to forcibly rehome all rabbits to Wales, Peter finds himself drawn deeper into the Rabbit Way, and is about to question everything he has ever thought about his friends, his nation, and his species. Sometimes, it'll take a rabbit to teach a human about humanity . . .
A Constant Forester - A journey discovering and using the positive interaction between people and forests
'A Constant Forester' takes one with the author and his forestry career on a journey, over some fifty years, through adventures in the forests of numerous countries. The journey starts in Papua New Guinea, where the dense tropical forests are the local communities' birthright and source of subsistence. It then moves through several Asian countries, including a fascinating sojourn for a year in Burma, where some forty percent of the rich teak forests were under the control of insurgents, and then on to planting thousands of hectares of mangroves off the coast of Bangladesh to protect against cyclones and extend the land mass. In Africa, the work involves both high forests and vast woodlands and the people involved with these. But the story isn't just about forests and trees. It's about the author's increasing involvement with the people and communities who live in on the fringes of forests and who rely partially or wholly on the forests and trees for their livelihoods. It's about the dawning of awareness of the cultural and economic value of the trees and forests to these people as well as the potential for these same individuals or communities to effectively protect and sustainably manage the forests with which they are associated. Recognizing this potential, in Tanzania, the author helps to return the customary tenure rights to communities over their woodlands to manage and provide wood for fuel to urban centers. Traveling and working in numerous countries, some under autocratic dictatorships, others in a state of war, a number mired by corruption, and one or two even in a state of near anarchy led to numerous 'interesting' experiences. A few of these were downright dangerous, such as investigating forests in insurgent-held territory in Burma, or being lost and running low on fuel on a flight in Liberia. Others were humorous, and some make one cringe while sharing the discomfort. The story culminates in India with the successful implementation of a community forest management project involving over 5,000 communities that provided immense personal and professional satisfaction. It was a win-win situation for the majority of the communities involved as well as for the forests they had been assigned. People's livelihoods were significantly enhanced and previously heavily degraded forests were being protected and restored to their forest glory.

In this important new work, Martin Halliwell focuses on the tensions between the two dimensions of Reinhold Niebuhr's thought: his political role as a radical social critic and the conservative drift of his religious beliefs. Halliwell concentrates particularly on his attempts to justify the role of the religious critic in a secular age by tracing his thought back to European and American traditions of religious individualism. In order to better examine Niebuhr's philosophy, Halliwell positions him in a series of debates on political, religious, ethical, and cultural themes with other public intellectuals such as John Dewey, Paul Tillich, W. H. Auden, George Kennan, and Martin Luther King, Jr. In doing so, the book reassesses the role of "dialogue" in Reinhold Niebuhr's thought and the important contributions that Reinhold Niebuhr made to twentieth century American culture.

The Constant Gardener is a magnificent exploration of the new world order by New York Times bestselling author John le Carr , one of the most compelling and elegant storytellers of our time. The novel opens in northern Kenya with the gruesome murder of Tessa Quayle -- young, beautiful, and dearly beloved to husband Justin. When Justin sets out on a personal odyssey to uncover the mystery of her death, what he finds could make him not only a suspect among his own colleagues, but a target for Tessa's killers as well. A master chronicler of the betrayals of ordinary people caught in political conflict, John le Carr portrays the dark side of unbridled capitalism as only he can. In The Constant Gardener he tells a compelling, complex story of a man elevated through tragedy, as Justin Quayle -- amateur gardener, aging widower, and ineffectual bureaucrat -- discovers his own natural resources and the extraordinary courage of the woman he barely had time to love.

Pierre Elliott Trudeau – radical progressive or unavowed socialist? His legacy remains divisive. Most scholars portray Trudeau's ties to the left as evidence either of communist affinities or of ideals that led him to found a progressive, modern Canada. The Constant Liberal traces the charismatic politician's relationship with left and labour movements throughout his career. Christo Aivalis argues that although Trudeau found key influences and friendships on the left, he was in fact a consistently classic liberal, driven by individualist and capitalist principles. While numerous biographies have noted the impact of the left on Trudeau's intellectual and political development, this comprehensive analysis showcases the interplay between liberalism and democratic socialism that defined his world view – and shaped his effective use of power. The Constant Liberal suggests that Trudeau's leftist activity was not so much a call for social democracy as a warning to fellow liberals that lack of reform could undermine liberal-capitalist social relations.
