Two beautifully-written retellings of the legend of St. Christopher-which is largely allegorical-and of the real-life story of St. Cuthbert, one of the most important early Medieval Christian religious figures of northern England, by master storyteller Mary MacGregor. The legend of St. Christopher first appeared in western Europe during the ninth century, and told the story of an extraordinarily tall man named Offero who, after first serving Satan, converted to Christianity and one day unknowingly carried the young Jesus across a river. In this way he was renamed "Christopher" or the "carrier of Christ." Later martyred by pagans, Christopher was canonized by the Catholic Church, and is to this day the patron saint of travellers. The story of St. Cuthbert is based on the life of an early Celtic Christian monk who, through his life and work, made famous the monasteries of Melrose and Lindisfarne in Northumbria in the Northeast of England. Famously Spartan and known for his generosity to the poor, he was accredited with the gift of healing and was known as the "Wonder Worker of Britain." He carried out missionary work all over Britain and Ireland, and founded an oratory at Dull, Scotland, which later became a monastery and then the University of St Andrews. Canonized after his death, he became the patron saint of northern England.

St Cuthbert's tower tells the story of a determined young woman who moves with her family to a rural estate, facing both the excitement and challenges of adapting to country life. Upon their arrival at a decaying hall, she quickly becomes aware of the tension surrounding the property, as local resentment and hidden histories weave an air of unease around her new home. Among the villagers is a bitter rival who had coveted the estate, adding friction to her attempts to settle in. Amid overturned luggage, creaking corridors, and curious glances from neighbors, she begins uncovering whispers of the hall's dark past and a mysterious figure connected to its legacy. The novel blends elements of social contrast, rural hardship, and gothic intrigue, as its protagonist's resilience is tested against both external conflict and the lingering shadows that seem to haunt the place. Through her courage and curiosity, the story reveals how strength and empathy can illuminate even the most troubled corners of the past.

Restoring Creation: The Natural World in the Anglo-Saxon Saints' Lives of Cuthbert and Guthlac

An investigation into two important Saints Lives provides a window into the Anglo-Saxon perception of the non-human world. The question of the relationship between humanity and the non-human world may seem a modern phenomenon; but in fact, even in the early medieval period people actively reflected on their own engagement with the non-human world, with such reflections profoundly shaping their literature. This book reveals how the Anglo-Saxons themselves conceptualised the relationship, using the Saints Lives of Cuthbert and Guthlac as a prism. Each saint is fundamentally linked to a specific and recognisable location in the English landscape: Lindisfarne and Farne for Cuthbert, and the East Anglian fens and the island of Crowland for Guthlac. These landscapes of the mind were defined by the theological and philosophical perspectives of their authors and audiences. The world in all its wonder was Creation, shaped by God. When humanity fell in Eden, its relationship to this world was transformed: cold now bites, fire burns, andwolves attack. In these Lives, however, saints, the holy epitome of humanity, are shown to restore the human relationship with Creation, as in the sea-otters warming Cuthbert's frozen feet, or birds and fish gathering to Guthlac like sheep to their shepherd. BRITTON ELLIOTT BROOKS is Project Assistant Professor at the University of Tokyo, Centre for Global Communication Strategies.

In this rousing book, David Adam celebrates the lives and interweaving stories of Aidan, Bede and Cuthbert. Recalling, in a personal introduction, his ordination to the pastoral ministry in Durham Cathedral (the burial place of Bede and Cuthbert) and his thirteen years as Vicar of the Holy Island of Lindisfarne (where Aidan lived), the author communicates clearly his appreciation of these three great saints. They have much to teach us, he believes, about vision – about expanding our spiritual awareness and deepening our love for God. St Aidan was Irish by birth and was a monk at Iona long before being selected as the first Bishop of Lindisfarne in 635. In time became pastor to all of Northumbria. St Bede the Venerable was born in 673 near Sunderland, and was a monk at Jarrow on the Tyne. He is revered for his scholarly output of commentaries on the Scriptures and his famous Ecclesiastical History of the English People, which is such an important source of our knowledge of the development of Christianity in Britain St Cuthbert, when he was sixteen, received a vision of the soul of St Aidan being carried to heaven by angels. This vision may have convinced him to enter holy orders at Melrose where he became Prior. Later, having lived for some time as a hermit on the island of Farne, he was later reluctantly persuaded to became Bishop of Lindisfarne in 685.
