Venom: De Havilland Venom and Sea Venom

Venom: De Havilland Venom and Sea Venom

David Watkins; Brian Mercer

While it is true to say that the Venom carried out more operational ground attack sorties than any other RAF aircraft since the Second World War, its history has hitherto been sadly neglected or misreported. With the co-operation and assistance of many former Service and civilian pilots, the record can finally be set straight in what is the definitive history of this ground-attack, all weather and naval strike fighter.David Watkins discusses the problems of the trials and development programme and takes a detailed look at the aircraft's operational service with the air arms of Australia, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Iraq and Venezuela. Of particular interest is new information relating to the Sea Venom's career with the Fleet Air Arm and the catastrophic wing failures and engine fires that plagued the early Second Tactical Air Force Venoms. It also contains a comprehensive account of Venom sorties during the Suez campaign, the 'Firedog' operations in Malaya and the protracted anti-terrorist offensive in Aden and Oman. These accounts throw new light on the conflicts and have been compiled from interviews, private papers and personal accounts. Accompanying the text is a wealth of photographs, line drawings and maps, a number of which are from private collections and are previously unpublished.

Did you know: Hull City is the only team in the English Football League which hasn't got a single letter that you can colour in? City’s early matches were played at The Boulevard, the old home of rugby league side Hull FC? Up to 2008, the nation’s favourite trivia quiz question was: which is the largest city in England to have never had a team in the top division? The answer, of course, was Hull – but promotion in May 2008 rendered the question defunct and the search is now on for an updated version. The Hull City Miscellany – a book on the Tigers like no other, packed with facts, stats, trivia, stories and legend. Now, with the club tasting previously uncharted highs, look back at what has made this club what it is today – the players and characters that have represented City over the years and the events that have shaped the club. If you want to know the record crowd for a home game, the record appearance holder or longest-serving manager, look no further – this is the book you’ve been waiting for. From record goal scorers, to record defeats; from Boothferry Park to Dean Windass – it’s all in The Hull City Miscellany – can you afford not to own a copy?

Managed Care and The Treatment of Chronic Illness

Managed Care and The Treatment of Chronic Illness

With the wave of a burgeoning population of elderly patients cresting on the horizon, what do we know now from existing research and literature about managed care systems for patients who are chronically ill? What directions does existing research point toward today; is the available research comprehensive or cursory; and what changes will be required to address successfully this treatment aspect of health care? The purpose of this book is to examine critically and summarize the research on managed care treatment of the chronically ill, to expose what is not yet known in this health care field, and to reveal the outcomes of existing treatment methods. How are those with chronic illness treated in these facilities? How can these patients' treatment be improved given available statistics? How can MCOs be altered to address a problem that may become an issue of epidemic proportions in health care tomorrow? Managed Care and the Treatment of Chronic Illness is a unique presentation of available research in the treatment and outcome of care for the chronically ill patients in managed care settings. Chronic illnesses require frequent and specialized treatment for patients – anathema to the short-term and cost-effective objectives of MCOs. Professor Christianson, aided by five expert collaborators, addresses MCO strengths and issues in treating these patients, looks at research results comparing treatment in MCOs versus fee-for-service medicine, and considers the various management techniques and programs to deliver care to enrollees with chronic conditions. Finally the authors critically address the anticipation of the future for this growing population and research: the changes in the MCO environment this population will demand for successful care and the suggested directions for future research. They consider the use of administrative and medical records data by MCOs in benchmarking, assessment, and characterization of high-risk patients. The author concludes with a section on member-wide interventions and the effectiveness of targeted initiatives in treating the specific chronic diseases of asthma, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and congestive heart failure. For anyone interested in the effectiveness of managed care operations, the challenges of treatment of chronic illness, or future health management for the elderly population, this book is a one-of-a-kind examination in its field. Managed Care and the Treatment of Chronic Illness will be a stepping stone for health service researchers, policy analysts and policymakers, managed care administrators, and educators in the fields of medicine, epidemiology, economics, and sociology.

For those who grew up around hockey, it's easy to understand a sentence like, He let loose a howitzer from the hash marks, roofing the puck past the stunned netminder. But for those who have no idea what that means, How to Speak Hockey provides a unique look into Canada's unofficial third language. Even lifelong lovers of the game might just learn a thing or two: - Many hockey fans know about the five hole, but few know that there are seven holes in total - Before the humble rubber puck, people used strange round balls called road apples - Learn the strange and unique origins of common phrases including stood on his head and hat trick - Find out exactly what is meant when a player dipsy doodles through traffic and breaks the ice - In hockey, sometimes a hot dog is not just something you get at the concession stand - Fighting has always been a part of hockey, so it's not surprising that there are so many words to describe it, from a word as innocent as dance to the biggest fight in hockey the bench-clearing brawl. For all those wannabe hockeyists or lifelong rink rats out there, game on!
