What if humanity had a second chance to reshape the nature of existence? After civilization's fall a small group of island survivors built a community without power, greed, inequality or violence. Earthborn is that place, where the basic premise is "Care for one another and Do No Harm." To do so they have erased history and kept their settlement secret from the world. From the outside island world comes a beautiful blue-eyed wanderer named Angela, bearing a "book" which encourages Charles, Isla and Robert to follow her into a world of new adventure and challenges. The world needs the values and the lessons learned in Earthborn to avoid a repeat of history. On their journeys they will meet many endearing and interesting people eager to share their lives and experiences. Can greed and power be overcome by a conspiracy of young idealistic people eager to mold their world with love, tolerance and community? The city of New Van was not built on the premise of "Do No Harm." Power and greed threaten island communities and their precious environment. However, the power of love and the power of the people cannot be underestimated. If you believed in the dreams of the '60s you will embrace the journeys of our merry explorers. You will smile at references to that special time and the music which inspired us. You will cheer for our heroes as they find love, purpose, community and family. It all takes place on an island not unlike our own.

The Search for Negotiated Peace

The Search for Negotiated Peace

David S. Patterson

The First World War was an epic event of huge proportions that lasted over four years and involved the armies of more than twenty nations, resulting in 30 million casualties, including more than 8 million killed. Set against the backdrop of this massive carnage, The Search for Negotiated Peace is the gripping story of the events that moved high profile American and European citizens, particularly women, into the international peace movement. This small, transatlantic network put forth proposals for changing the international system of negotiation. They supported non-annexationist war aims and attempted to discredit nations’ secret diplomacy, militarism and narrowly nationalistic practices. Instead, they wanted to develop a ‘new diplomacy.’ David Patterson skillfully develops the interactions of many of the notable leaders of the movement, including Jane Addams, Aletta Jacobs, and Rosika Schwimmer, into an absorbing narrative that brings together the various strands of women's history, international diplomatic history, and peace history for the first time. The Search for Negotiated Peace is an essential read for anyone interested in the social history of World War I and the foundations of citizen activism today.

War in a Time of Peace

War in a Time of Peace

David Halberstam

"The Best and the Brightest" was David Halberstam's classic account of how America became involved in Vietnam. In "War in a Time of Peace", he brilliantly evokes the internecine conflicts, the untrammelled egos, and the struggles for dominance among the key figures in the White House, the State department, and the military in the post-Soviet period. He shows how in the last ten years the Vietnam war has shaped American politics and policy makers and especially the decisions of men who served in the war, such as General Colin Powell and presidential advisors Richard Holbrooke and Anthony Lake as well as those who did not. Sweeping in scope and impressive in its depth, "War in a Time of Peace" provides fascinating portraits of the main players including Clinton, Bush, Reagan and Kissinger and a stunning view of what lies behind the US government over which George W. Bush now presides. It is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand America in the twenty-first century. "Halbertsam's most important book, more ambitious and revealing than "The Best and the Brightest" Just as Vietnam was the test case for our elders, the Balkans and other tragic conflicts became the proving ground for the Bush and Clinton administrations. What Halberstam has written is nothing less than a "War and Peace" for our generation" - Leslie H. Gelb, President, Council on Foreign Relations.
God's Roadmap to Peace

God's Roadmap to Peace

David R. Bradley

In God's Roadmap to Peace, David R. Bradley steps through God's revealed roadmap as described in the book of Revelation one event at a time. Before time began, the Creator knew that His decision to create mankind with the freedom to reject Him would eventually lead to suffering and death. Thus, He designed a roadmap that, if followed, would lead men back to the peace God intended. God then revealed this roadmap in His word, the Bible. The final stages of His roadmap were revealed to the Apostle John in what we call the Revelation. In concert with the rest of Scripture, these events come to life as the horrors unfold toward those who choose their own way. As the roadmap continues to its final destination, what is revealed is a glorious, peaceful inheritance beyond imagination awaiting those who place their trust in Him.

"Professor Forsythe's attention to relations between peace and human rights opens new areas for analysis and synthesizes important information. This book confirms, once again, his eminent position as a scholar of human rights." - Claude E. Welch, Jr., Distinguished Service Professor, SUNY, Buffalo. As our world becomes a truly global village through instantaneous media transmission of events, the relationship between human rights and peaceful international relations receives more and more attention. David P. Forsythe's book analyzes and discusses the dimensions of cover and overt human rights violations and how they militate against the establishment of democracies in the Third World. "Human Rights and Peace" evaluates critically the argument that human rights in general and democracy in particular contribute to peaceful international relations. David P. Forsythe is a professor of political science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His publications include "The Internationalization of Human Rights", "The Politics of International Law", "Human Rights and World Politics", and "U. S. Foreign Policy".

Part One describes the paradox of internationally recognized human rights standards and international violence. Forsythe draws a crucial comparison between the lack of overt force between industrialized democracies and the use of covert force by certain democracies against some elected Third World governments. Part Two deals with human rights and intrastate violence. A creative framework of analysis, centering on the concept of political legitimacy, is illustrated by case studies of Sri Lanka, Liberia, and Romania. Forsythe shows that, in different ways and in different situations, the violation of human rights standards can be correlated with political revolution. Human Rights and Peace evaluates critically the argument that human rights in general and democracy in particular contribute to peaceful international relations.
Never Come to Peace Again

Never Come to Peace Again

Prior to the American Revolution, the Ohio River Valley was a cauldron of competing interests: Indian, colonial, and imperial. The conflict known as Pontiac's Uprising, which lasted from 1763 until 1766, erupted out of this volatile atmosphere. Never Come to Peace Again, the first complete account of Pontiac's Uprising to appear in nearly fifty years, is a richly detailed account of the causes, conduct, and consequences of events that proved pivotal in American colonial history. When the Seven Years' War ended in 1760, French forts across the wilderness passed into British possession. Recognizing that they were just exchanging one master for another, Native tribes of the Ohio valley were angered by this development. Led by an Ottawa chief named Pontiac, a confederation of tribes, including the Delaware, Seneca, Chippewa, Miami, Potawatomie, and Huron, rose up against the British. Ultimately unsuccessful, the prolonged and widespread rebellion nevertheless took a heavy toll on British forces.Even more devastating to the British was the rise in revolutionary sentiment among colonists in response to the rebellion. For Dixon, Pontiac's Uprising was far more than a bloody interlude between Great Britain's two wars of the eighteenth century. It was the bridge that linked the Seven Years' War with the American Revolution.

The First Fifty Years of Peace Research

Peace research first emerged as an explicit academic area of study in the 1950s. Pioneers of peace research included Wright, Richardson and Lenz, and this book examines their contribution and that of the 'frontiersmen' who developed the study further, establishing peace research in its own right. Assessing the evolution, status and significance of peace research after fifty years, this novel and comprehensive book is relevant not only to students of peace research, but also to the developing debates within international relations and security studies. This is where there are real problems associated with the understanding of new problems and issues by reference to traditional concepts and categories. The book will attract a broad market in the fields of international relations, politics and social theory, as well as scholars in peace studies.

Carrots and sticks have always been used in combination in diplomatic affairs, but scholars and policymakers have focused more on the sticks than the carrots. In this provocative study, policy-savvy scholars examine a wide range of cases—from North Korea to South Africa to El Salvador and Bosnia—to demonstrate the power of incentives to deter nuclear proliferation, prevent armed conflict, defend civil and human rights, and rebuild war-torn societies. The book addresses the 'moral hazard' of incentives, the danger that they can be construed as bribes, concessions, or appeasement. Incentives can take many forms—economic and political, as palpable as fuel oil and as intangible, yet powerful, as diplomatic recognition and 'constructive engagement.' The cases demonstrate that incentives can sometimes succeed when traditional methods—threats, sanctions, or force—fail or are too dangerous to apply.

The biblical title ‘The Prince of Peace’ leaves us in no doubt that God’s purpose in Jesus Christ is to bring peace – universal peace, both with God and with our neighbours. But have we really understood what this peace might look like, especially in a world of wars and suffering? David Kerrigan sees the coming of Jesus at Christmas as central to the divine plan to bring peace to the world. Through reflection on biblical texts and mission stories he locates God at the centre of our mission and encourages us to restore the peace, joy and hope that come from accompanying Jesus.

Deep inner peace and peace of mind with spiritual balance is something everyone wants, but how does one attain it? More importantly, how does one maintain it in the midst of everyday life? Moving through sections on Stillness, Silence, Solitude and Sanctuary, this book draws on the lived experience and learning of the author, as well as the wisdom of Christian contemplatives and mystics from the past, to help people walk the mystic path of peace through life.

In Bosnia, the Middle East, Haiti, and other situations central to the U.S. post-Cold War foreign policy, success or failure has turned on America's ability to promote hope and opportunity as the by-products of intervention. In the wake of war, violence, and civil unrest, providing jobs, homes, basic services, and capital has been the strategy for subduing opposition and building political will as U.S. and allied troops wind down their limited missions. At the same time, dwindling aid budgets, differences with other donors, institutional gaps, congressional opposition, and conflicting objectives have compromised the effectiveness of economic recovery programs worldwide. This book is built around a detailed analysis of U.S. efforts in Bosnia-Herzegovina, in the Palestinian Territories, and in the Republic of Haiti. It assesses the effectiveness of U.S. strategic planning and the implementation of American economic plans in each of these situations, identifying areas where new approaches and programs may be needed to enhance the likelihood of success in the future. With the resolution of regional conflicts looming as an increasingly important component of U.S. foreign policy and the concurrent unwillingness to expose U.S. forces to prolonged risk in these situations, post-conflict initiatives will prove to be more important than ever before. This book offers crucial insights into the challenges of promoting stability through the restoration of hope and opportunity to the victims of crises and provides a forward-looking assessment of the future demands and opportunities created in conjunction with the economic dimensions of peacekeeping.

Drawing parallels between tribal behavior and international relations to demonstrate that societies are not inherently aggressive but are led into conflict when pride or in-group pressures push people to fight, this profound look at the chilling reality of cold war and its arsenal of nuclear destruction offers valuable new insights into how prejudices and stereotypes contribute to what may seem like an inexorable drift to war. Yet the authors conclude that war is not inevitable, as they offer suggestions for an end to the arms race in the nuclear age. Based on original research, this is a long overdue contribution to the study of war and peace in our time and a text for newly emerging courses on the subject.
