A fresh perspective on the Australia-China relationship told through the lens of memoir, culture and friendshipIn the late nineteenth century, as crippling famine devastated northern China, the Li family had no choice but to leave Shanxi province. Heading north, they began a new life, farming the remote grasslands of Inner Mongolia. They prospered as landowners and teachers, but could not escape the ravages of warlords, soldiers and revolutionaries. Born into this pioneering family, Li Yao grew up in Mao's China. He dreamt of becoming a writer, but his dreams were torn apart by the Cultural Revolution. When the storm finally subsided, the young man turned to translation. In Australian writing, he found colourful tales set in new landscapes, a literature quite unfamiliar to him. Li Yao's story is interwoven with that of his friend, Australian historian David Walker. David's family had also settled in an unfamiliar and difficult land, a world away in distant South Australia. The two men became friends as Li Yao translated one of David's books into Chinese, and their personal histories provide a fascinating, illuminating window into life in China, an experience inevitably shaped by China's relations with the wider world.

Moses Fleetwood Walker was the first black American to play baseball in a major league. He achieved college baseball stardom at Oberlin College in the 1880s. Teammates as well as opponents harassed him; Cap Anson, the Chicago White Stockings star, is blamed for driving Walker and the few other blacks in the major leagues out of the game, but he could not have done so alone. A gifted athlete, inventor, civil rights activist, author, and entrepreneur, Walker lived precariously along America's racial fault lines. He died in 1924, thwarted in ambition and talent and frustrated by both the American dream and the national pastime.

This book tells the story of three Black brothers who enlisted in the British West Indies Regiment and served King and Country in the First World War. It follows them from their birthplace in Barbados, via the colony of British Guiana, to the battlefields of Egypt and Palestine. Only two returned home. The book also tells of a daughter's search for the truth about the part her father and two uncles played in the war. This was truly a 'world war' but the role Black people played in it has often been ignored by the history books. This book seeks to play its part in redressing the balance. The author's search takes her from her birthplace in British Guiana, via a library in South London, to Seaford in Sussex and Marseilles in France where, ninety eight years after he died, she was able to visit the grave of her uncle. In telling the story of the three Walker brothers the book makes a unique contribution to the history of Black participation in the war
David Trimble was one of the most influential figures in modern British and Irish history. A Nobel Laureate, he negotiated the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 that helped to secure peace in Northern Ireland. In this first biography to chart Trimble’s life and death, award-winning journalist Stephen Walker vividly details how this shy Belfast academic changed the political landscape of Northern Ireland. With the cooperation of the Trimble family, Peacemaker offers unparalleled insights into the life of a history maker: the first person to be elected First Minister of Northern Ireland and the last Ulster unionist to hold that title. Using interviews with his widow Lady Trimble and their grown-up children, the book colourfully charts Trimble’s story from the County Down city of Bangor, through the divisive world of unionist politics, to his crowning moment at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo. It is a tale of how the leaders of unionism and nationalism worked together to end decades of violence to compromise and share power.
A major reassessment of Walker Evans that shows him as a photographer both of his time and very much ahead of it. Walker Evans (1903–1975) is one of the great enduring figures of modern photography. His vivid images are inseparable from the history of the medium and the history of the USA. The subject matter was quintessentially American – small-town life, typical buildings, commercial signs and anonymous citizens – but Evans brought to them the curiosity and fascination of an outsider. His exacting eye defined an era while also questioning it. Pop artists and Conceptualists saw Evans as a pioneer and precursor, and his sensibility continues to inspire countless younger image makers. Walker Evans offers a broad overview of his work and its lasting influence on generations of artists. It brings together key photographs and projects spanning his entire career – from self-portraits of the 1920s to his Polaroid experiments in the 1970s – along with books and other publications that reflect his tireless capacity for observation. Together, the works reveal a creator who not only documented the world around him but also invited viewers to question the nature of photography and the perception of reality itself.

Walker Percy (1916-1990), the reclusive southern author most famous for his 1961 novel The Moviegoer, spent much of his adult life in Covington, Louisiana. In the spirit of traditional southern storytelling, this biography of Percy takes its shape from candid interviews with his family, close friends, and acquaintances. In thirteen interviews, we get to know Percy through his lifelong friend Shelby Foote, Percy's brothers LeRoy and Phin, his former priest, his housekeeper, and former teachers, among others--all in their own words. Over the course of the interviews, readers learn intimate details of Percy's writing process; his interaction with community members of different ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds; and his commitment to civil rights issues. What emerges is a multidimensional portrait of Percy as a man, a friend, and a family member.
