Your Guide to Downtown Denise Scott Brown
Denise Scott Brown has shaped the course of contemporary architecture since the 1960s. She has chartered a rebellious course across three continents - from childhood in 1930s South Africa to education in 1950s England to teaching and practice in the United States. Scott Brown is both renowned and misunderstood for her designs and theories, many developed in collaboration with her companion in life and work, Robert Venturi. From her 1972 research studio on Las Vegas emerged the legendary book Learning from Las Vegas, whose visuals and social impact remain as important today as then. As a younger generation of architects and urban designers engages the complexity she defined, Scott Brown continues to raise her voice as a fierce critic of a modernism ignorant of context, history, and joint creativity. The time has come to rediscover her undogmatic formal language, careful urban interventions, and adventures in mannerism. This groundbreaking new book features previously unpublished material and offers an entirely fresh view of Scott Brown's achievements as a preeminent architectural designer, urbanist, theoretician, and teacher. A fantastic guide to her life and ideas, it also reveals her humanism, complexity, and wit.

The Heart Of Denise And Other Tales (Edition1)
The Heart Of Denise And Other Tales is a historical collection that delves into the emotional struggles of its characters within the context of political and social turmoil. In the titular story, a young woman finds herself trapped in a web of political scheming and personal conflict as she faces an arranged marriage to a man she despises. Amid the lavish distractions of the royal court, she experiences isolation, her inner turmoil heightened by the pressures of societal expectations and a forced future she cannot control. The story unfolds as she yearns for freedom, desiring both adventure and escape from the constraints of her prescribed life. Throughout the collection, the complexities of personal choices, duty, and longing for autonomy become evident, showcasing the internal battles of individuals bound by external forces. The stories explore the intricate balance between duty and desire, shedding light on the emotional cost of decisions made under the weight of societal expectations and the yearning for self-determination in a turbulent world.
In Conversation with Denise Ferreira da Silva
Ferreira da Silva's own words, in interviews and an original essay, frame this collection of interdisciplinary scholars and artists engaging with her influential work at the intersections of global race, ethnic, and feminist studies. As a decolonial feminist philosopher, Denise Ferreira da Silva has pushed the fields of ethnic and feminist studies beyond traditional stakes in US-centered formulations of difference and inclusion. In Conversation with Denise Ferreira da Silva is an interdisciplinary reading companion of Silva’s work – and its reckoning with the persistence of global racial violence – designed to help scholars, students, artists, and activists better engage in a global idea of race. While traditional scholarship around difference has often focused on describing difference as separation, segregation, and subjugation, Ferreira da Silva's art practice and philosophical writings attempt to think and teach "difference without separatability." The book is framed by original interviews with Ferreira da Silva on topics including Black Brazilian thought and feminist studies, disorder and Afro-pessimism, citation politics and decoloniality, and Spinoza and physics. Contributors from a broad range of disciplines – such as comparative literature, creative writing, criminology, gender studies, and global studies – provide short reflections on Ferreira da Silva’s methods and arguments on these topics. By providing a way to enter into dialogue with Ferreira da Silva’s works, this volume brings one of the most distinguished and consistent recent voices on the nature of the human to those interested in engaging questions of racial power and difference within their own disciplines.

This volume presents the complete correspondence between two of the most important and influential American poets of the postwar period. The almost 500 letters range widely over the poetry scene and the issues that made the period so lively and productive. But what gives the exchange its special personal and literary resonance is the sense of spiritual affinity and shared conviction about the power of the visionary imagination. Duncan and Levertov explore these matters in rich detail until, under the stress of dealing with the Vietnam War in poetry, they discover deep-seated differences in the religious and ethical convictions underlying their politics and poetic stance. The issues that drew them together and those that drove them apart create a powerful personal drama with far-reaching historical and cultural significance. The editors have provided a critical Introduction, full notes, a chronology, and a glossary of names.

Maps Of City And Body: Shedding Light On The Performances Of Denise Uyehara
Maps of City and Body: Shedding Light on the Performances of Denise Uyehara presents the complete texts of "Big Head" and "Maps of City and Body," two of Uyehara's most acclaimed shows. In "Big Head," Uyehara questions the logic of political and personal rhetoric by exploring the relationship between Japanese American internment camps and post-September 11th racial violence. Maps of City and Body takes on subjects ranging from the trails left behind by childhood kisses to the reimagining of a grandmother's fiery suicide, to explore how memories mark our bodies. In both works, Uyehara remains unflinchingly attentive to the transformative details that give our lives shape. This selection of Uyehara's performance pieces has been designed to function as both experience and documentation. It includes images from her performances, as well as detailed stage directions. It also includes detailed descriptions of Uyehara's other public art investigations, as well as a conversation with dancer/scholar Yutian Wong, a chronology of readings and stagings, and a bibliography. Maps of City and Body is the first in a series of books from Kaya Press on Asian diasporic performance artists.
