You may be familiar with the Biblical facts of the Genesis narrative of Abraham, but the author of this unique book has carved a new perspective by opening to the reader the lives and personalities of the characters. By examining their common human psychological responses to the situations the characters encountered, each person in the narrative becomes real and knowable. The title for the book reflects its actual content: a series of letters to a newspaper editor that took place over many months via email. The initial conversation developed into a study of the geography, social conditions and customs of that Biblical era and included the background history. A careful assessment of characters and personalities that are revealed in the Biblical narrative shaped the content of this book. It became a conversation not only with the editor, but also with God as He revealed to them deeper insights that were embedded right in the narrative. You will find this book to be an insightful and refreshing read while you learn about Abraham's experiences with his very personal God who gently guided him during his spiritual growth to a full faith response to God's love.

Michael R. Miller

In this accessible and informative text, Michael R. Miller draws on his extensive experience working on award-winning films, to help readers develop their ‘eye’ for editing. The book begins by emphasizing the need for editors to pay attention to the emotional and aesthetic tone of a project and scene, before it explores what makes great editing in a feature film. This includes editing approaches founded on deep appreciation for actors’ performances and directors’ philosophies, trimming or even deleting footage that weighs down the narrative, refining character point of view, the importance of opening scenes, the role of sound, and much more. Throughout the text, the Miller draws on insights from editors such as Paul Hirsch, ACE, Susan E. Morse, ACE and Thelma Schoonmaker, ACE to provide readers with a deep understanding of how and why “movies are made in the cutting room”. This is a perfect resource for intermediate and advanced editing students, as well as professional editors hoping to improve their craft and learn from the masters. Miller’s emphasis on what editors feel while watching dailies, his focus on performance quality, his assertions that, paradoxically, a picture might be improved when a great scene, or even a considerable number are deleted – will be eye-opening for one and all.

The Accidental Life: An Editor's Notes on Writing and Writers

The Accidental Life: An Editor's Notes on Writing and Writers

Terry McDonell

Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group
2017
nidottu
An Amazon Best Book of 2016 A celebration of the writing and editing life, as well as a look behind the scenes at some of the most influential magazines in America (and the writers who made them what they are). You might not know Terry McDonell, but you certainly know his work. Among the magazines he has top-edited: Outside, Rolling Stone, Esquire, and Sports Illustrated. In this revealing memoir, McDonell talks about what really happens when editors and writers work with deadlines ticking (or drinks on the bar). His stories about the people and personalities he's known are both heartbreaking and bitingly funny--playing "acid golf" with Hunter S. Thompson, practicing brinksmanship with David Carr and Steve Jobs, working the European fashion scene with Liz Tilberis, pitching TV pilots with Richard Price. Here, too, is an expert's practical advice on how to recruit--and keep--high-profile talent; what makes a compelling lede; how to grow online traffic that translates into dollars; and how, in whatever format, on whatever platform, a good editor really works, and what it takes to write well. Taking us from the raucous days of New Journalism to today's digital landscape, McDonell argues that the need for clear storytelling from trustworthy news sources has never been stronger. Says Jeffrey Eugenides: "Every time I run into Terry, I think how great it would be to have dinner with him. Hear about the writers he's known and edited over the years, what the magazine business was like back then, how it's changed and where it's going, inside info about Edward Abbey, Jim Harrison, Annie Proulx, old New York, and the Swimsuit issue. That dinner is this book."
