This quantitative non-experimental correlational research design aimed to describe which among behavioral, emotional and cognitive engagement significantly predicts the academic performance of senior high school students in San Vicente National High School and thereafter develop a regression model for the study. The predictors were tested whether these influence greatly the academic performance of thee students in terms of grades in English, Mathematics and Science subjects. Using the complete enumeration, 82 respondents were selected to answer the validated and adapted instruments. Using Pearson's r and multiple regression analysis, the figures revealed that there is no significant relationship between school engagement and students' academic performance; however, significant relationship existed between cognitive engagement and academic performance in Science subject among the respondents. The multiple regression model of the study is: Y (Academic Performance of the respondents) = -1.801. x1 (behavioral engagement) + 1.426x2 (emotional engagement) - 1.944x3 (cognitive engagement) + 88.586.

The Birth of Territory

The Birth of Territory

Territory is one of the central political concepts of the modern world and, indeed, functions as the primary way the world is divided and controlled politically. Yet territory has not received the critical attention afforded to other crucial concepts such as sovereignty, rights, and justice. While territory continues to matter politically, and territorial disputes and arrangements are studied in detail, the concept of territory itself is often neglected today. Where did the idea of exclusive ownership of a portion of the earth's surface come from, and what kinds of complexities are hidden behind that seemingly straightforward definition? The Birth of Territory provides a detailed account of the emergence of territory within Western political thought. Looking at ancient, medieval, Renaissance, and early modern thought, Stuart Elden examines the evolution of the concept of territory from ancient Greece to the seventeenth century to determine how we arrived at our contemporary understanding. Elden addresses a range of historical, political, and literary texts and practices, as well as a number of key players - historians, poets, philosophers, theologians, and secular political theorists - and in doing so sheds new light on the way the world came to be ordered and how the earth's surface is divided, controlled, and administered.

Shakespeare was an astute observer of contemporary life, culture, and politics. The emerging practice of territory as a political concept and technology did not elude his attention. In Shakespearean Territories, Stuart Elden reveals just how much Shakespeare's unique historical position and political understanding can teach us about territory. Shakespeare dramatized a world of technological advances in measuring, navigation, cartography, and surveying, and his plays open up important ways of thinking about strategy, economy, the law, and colonialism, providing critical insight into a significant juncture in history. Shakespeare's plays explore many territorial themes: from the division of the kingdom in King Lear, to the relations among Denmark, Norway, and Poland in Hamlet, to questions of disputed land and the politics of banishment in Richard II. Elden traces how Shakespeare developed a nuanced understanding of the complicated concept and practice of territory and, more broadly, the political-geographical relations between people, power, and place. A meticulously researched study of over a dozen classic plays, Shakespearean Territories will provide new insights for geographers, political theorists, and Shakespearean scholars alike.
