Emma Snow has left everything familiar behind. Eight months earlier, she had lived in a lazy small Midwestern town, but her world changed after a dark secret was exposed. She has been thrown into a world where her wits must be sharp if she is to survive. Fearing for her life, she runs away. Under the cover of night, she stumbles five miles through a field to the police department in town to seek safety, and help. Safe but exhausted during the drive to what will be her next home, she feels a glimmer of hope that fate will be more kind to her. A new school, town and family, life seems to be looking up. She lets her guard down, and then the nightmare begins all over again. Escape, this time, means letting go of hope. She is on her on. She is leaving behind a dark dangerous world and is thrown into a terrifying new life. The Garbage Bag Girl is a story of hope, endurance, and srength, of finding one's pace in the world. It is about the resiliency of the human spirit that carries us through-taking over when we would give up. It is a story of love lost, and of love that finds us when most needed arriving in the most unexpected places and forms.

After an illicit liaison with his mistress, the owner of a private sanitation company in New York is murdered. His wife, aware of the affair, first believes it could be the motivation for the killing. But when her garbage truck drivers are attacked by her husbands "associates", The District Attorney assigns Detective Frank Miranda to infiltrate the organized crime family running the garbage cartel. Family values are questioned.... temptation and loneliness create unfortunate bedfellows. This is not a typical "mob murder mystery" story... instead, it has great moments of comedy, with colorful stories about him driving a 30 ton garbage truck with no experience, and how he hits almost everything in sight aside from a human being Yet, it simultaneously takes you into the inner world of an "infiltrator" and the personal decisions and sacrifices he made daily. It delves into the toll taken on the loved ones around him; his wife, his family and his friends. This work succeeds at touching your emotions: sadness, anger, love and laughter.

Poetry has the power to touch our hearts, stir our souls, and expand our minds. It can titillate our senses in beautiful ways to bring us to the depths of sadness or the heights of elation. A great poem can be a transcendental, life-changing experience. Our poems? These ones here? They're fine. Good, even. I dunno, I like 'em. Collected from years of offbeat writing practice and the occasional weird brain worm that demanded something be done with it, Word Garbage is the culmination of two authors' repeated forays into a medium of which the biggest draw (for them) is its experimental nature. What follows inside are some of the results of these experiments. These unsanctioned, mad, literary science experiments. Some are quirky. Some are funny. Some are funny on purpose. Some are attempts to reach deep down into our hearts and drag out the things we were feeling at the time, pinning them down with words like so many dead butterflies. Some are mandatory homework assignments that we felt had a measure of value outside of the classes that birthed them. At least one is about marshmallows - unless that one's a metaphor for something else. So whether you love poetry, hate poetry, don't understand poetry, or just want to show off to your friends that you're the kind of astute intellectual reader who owns poetry books, come take a dumpster dive into our mind trash, because our Word Garbage will definitely have something that appeals to you. Probably. No refunds.

Growing up in the 1980s in Scarborough, Ontario was simply the best, it was freedom.Children woke at dawn to watch Saturday morning cartoons. They would put on their Walkmans, jump on their bikes and stay out all day until the streetlights came on; stopping at the local variety store for popsicles, Nerds or Bubblicious. They would play by the lake on the train tracks, or even stop off at the local library to get the latest Nancy Drew book. There were no cell phones, no social media ... just baseball diamonds, skipping ropes, pools and dirt to play in.But that all changed for teenagers Jennifer, Elizabeth, and Samantha when the Scarborough Rapist started terrorizing their city. No one knew who he was, and the number of assaults and rapes were rapidly growing. All three girls were scared, and their idyllic city was not safe anymore. Jennifer is attacked in the parking lot of her high school, Elizabeth starts dating an abusive narcissist, and Samantha is raped by her boyfriend. What the women don't realize, is that the real monsters are men they all know.Years later, as they try to rebuild their lives, they must hatch a plan to finally take revenge, and make the men pay for what they did.

Why do central and local government initiatives aiming to curb the proliferation of garbage in Beijing and its disposal continue to be unsuccessful? Is the Uberization of waste picking through online-to-offline (O2O) garbage retrieval companies able to decrease waste and improve the lives of waste pickers? Most citizens of Beijing are well aware of the fact that their city is besieged by waste. Yet instead of taking individual action, they sit and wait for the governments at various levels to tell them what to do. And even if/when they adopt a proactive position, this does not last. Official education drives targeting the consumers are organized regularly and with modest success, but real solutions are not forthcoming. Various environmental non-governmental organizations are at work to raise the level of consciousness of the population, to change individual attitudes towards wasteful behavior, but seemingly with little overall effects.

Roosevelt and Howe is a joint biography of Franklin D. Roosevelt and one of his principal advisors. Louis Howe was not only FDR's first political aide, but the only one who also became an intimate personal friend. Other than Harry Hopkins in the late 1930s, he was the only advisor whom Roosevelt trusted completely to serve his interests without distracting personal ambition or a shadowy private agenda. This book is the story of their separate early lives, of the rare chances which brought them together and of their totally intertwined careers after 1912.
Global Garbage
Global Garbage examines the ways in which garbage, in its diverse forms, is being produced, managed, experienced, imagined, circulated, concealed, and aestheticized in contemporary urban environments and across different creative and cultural practices. The book explores the increasingly complex relationship between globalization and garbage in locations such as Beirut, Detroit, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, Manchester, Naples, Paris, Rio de Janeiro and Tehran. In particular, the book examines how, and under what conditions, contemporary imaginaries of excess, waste, and abandonment perpetuate – but also sometimes counter – the imbalances of power that are frequently associated with the global metropolitan condition. This interdisciplinary collection will appeal to the fields of anthropology, architecture, film and media studies, geography, urban studies, sociology, and cultural analysis.

Trash has been part of human societies since the beginning. It seems like the inevitable end to the process of making and using things, but why? Rebecca Donnelly wades into the muck of history and explores present-day innovations to answer some basic questions: Why do we make so much trash? Why are we so bad at handling it? How can we stop it (that is, us) from ruining the planet? She also looks into the out-there trash phenomena like the fatberg—a sewer-clogging floater of congealed cooking grease, baby wipes, and miscellaneous other flushed items.
