Presbyterians from the Irish province of Ulster were among the first to push the wild frontier west and found the city of Pittsburgh. By the 1840s, the flow of Irish Catholic immigrants had become a flood. Fleeing the great hunger and facing resentment in the city, they established themselves as key members of the community, building railroads and canals and establishing schools, hospitals and fraternal orders. During the Civil War, 156 women, many of them Irish, made the ultimate sacrifice for their new country when the Allegheny Arsenal exploded. The Fenians fought Southern Rebels under a green flag and made a little-known invasion of Canada in 1866. In the twentieth century, the sons and daughters of Erin took on roles as political leaders, labor agitators and entrepreneurs. Exploring tales of saints, sinners and visionaries, author Gerard F. O'Neil offers a beguiling and fascinating history of the Pittsburgh Irish.

This spellbinding tale, filled with engaging characters, heroes and villains alike, confronts the land-use crisis in America. With chilling affect, this story foreshadows the look and feel of the mid-21st-century given the continued loss of land to commercial and residential development. In Murrin's fictional America, the federal government enacts radical legislation in an attempt to control land-use practices, resulting in a political landscape that is unrecognizable. Local power brokers quickly learn to manipulate the new system, outlawing dissension groups while continuing to devour open space at an alarming rate. However, despite being driven underground, the tiny Land Preservation Society (LPS) remains determined to save as many acres as they can. As Tom Sanders struggles to keep the LPS together, he pins his last hope on holding the line at Meador Farms, rumored to be an ancient Native American burial ground, making it a possible deterrence to development. Tom is in for the race of his life, as he desperately tries to save his beloved property.

Have you ever found yourself in a no-win situation? A young Greg encountered a mysterious stranger who urged him to steal a Vatican relic on display at his friend's church. If he refused, he would endanger the lives of his mother and best friend, Robert. This stranger couldn't walk on holy ground and needed Greg to enter the church and steal it. Despite his fear, Greg agreed. The cost of his cooperation was steep, forever altering his life. Years later, Greg has transformed from a once meek and shy kid into a bitter man who looks out solely for himself. He charmed and married the daughter of a megachurch pastor, eventually rising to the position of lead pastor. Now known as Brother Greg, he represents wealth, power, and influence. His assistant is invaluable; she possesses an uncanny ability to anticipate Brother Greg's church-related and personal needs. At the height of his influence, the stranger reappears, seeking something from the now-famous Brother Greg. The situation becomes complicated when an old friend returns to his life with a plan to confront the stranger.

This work was born out of the desire to contribute to and build a meaningful education for both the student and the educator. To educate for life, with meaning, an understanding of the world and the applicability of knowledge in everyday life so that chemistry is understood and comprehended in the formation of citizens. So, first of all, I would like to thank God, the builder of life, the master of knowledge; my parents, who are now absent, who gave me the opportunities and the unconditional and immortal love they dedicated to me throughout their beautiful earthly passages; I would also like to thank the rest of my family and friends for their collaboration, understanding and dedication; and the teachers for their exchange of knowledge and ethical behaviour. I dedicate this study to my great friend and teacher Daniel Rodrigues Vieira, who left so soon, but left his great contribution to my personal and professional development.
