Gerald O'Donovan: A Life

Gerald O'Donovan: A Life

John F. Ryan

LIVERPOOL UNIVERSITY PRESS

This is the first full-length study of the life and work of novelist Gerald O’Donovan (1871–1942), a Catholic priest and social and cultural activist who, having abandoned the priesthood, became a writer and publisher. As a priest in Loughrea, Co. Galway, he was a very public figure in Irish life in several different areas. He was friendly with W. B. Yeats, Lady Gregory and George Moore and actively promoted the ‘Celtic Revival’. He was also a friend of Douglas Hyde and Sir Horace Plunkett and, for a number of years, he was a national figure in their respective organizations, the Gaelic League and the Co-operative Movement. After his marriage to Beryl Verschoyle, he moved to England and subsequently published six novels, the best-known and most controversial of which was Father Ralph (1913), a portrait of the artist as a priest. He also spent time working in the British Department of Propaganda under Lord Northcliffe, where H.G. Wells was one of his colleagues. This biography of an important and strangely neglected figure allows us new insights into a whole range of interesting cultural moments in twentieth-century Irish life, including the beginnings of literary modernism, the flourishing of the Irish literary revival and the emergence of a dissident strand within the Catholic clergy. Based on a rich and previously untapped array of archival material in Ireland, Britain and the US, the book provides both a much-needed reassessment of O'Donovan's work and also a history of Irish writing during those early decades of the twentieth century that saw the development of a new and powerful national literature.

Gerald Finzi: His Life and Music

Diana McVeagh

The Boydell Press

Critically acclaimed biography of one of England's best loved composers, with a full discussion and evaluation of his works. Gerald Finzi is one of the best-known modern English composers. While he is especially famous as a song-writer, for his sensitive settings of poets such as Hardy and Wordsworth, he also wrote in other genres; notable works includethe exquisite cantata Dies Natalis, and his cello concerto. He also exerted a major influence in the musical world as a whole, championing the neglected Ivor Gurney and reviving eighteenth-century composers with the amateur orchestra he founded. In this lively and sensitive study of his life and works, Diana McVeagh, the renowned Elgar and Finzi scholar, has made use of interviews with the main figures in his life, correspondence with contemporaries such as Vaughan Williams, Edmund Blunden, Arthur Bliss, Edmund Rubbra, Howard Ferguson and Herbert Howells, and her access to previously unpublished material in the form of his widow, Joy's, unpublished journal. The Finzithat emerges is a multi-faceted and complex character. The author shows how he developed from a solitary, introverted youth into a man with strong views and a myriad of interests: everything from education, pacifism, vegetarianism, to the Arts and Crafts movement, the English pastoral tradition, English apple varieties, and the significance of ancestry, friendship and marriage in an artist's life. She also discusses every work within the narrative of Finzi's life, and shows what makes his output so outstanding. Diana McVeagh is the author of the highly acclaimed Elgar the Music Maker [2007]; of the entries on Elgar and Finzi for The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians [1980, 2001]; and of the Finzi entry in The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography [2004].

This is a complete, illustrated catalogue of the painting and sculpture of Pop Art pioneer Gerald Laing (1936–2011), who shot to fame in the 1960s with his large-scale, iconic paintings of film-stars such as Brigitte Bardot and Anna Karina, conveyed in styles and colours that aped the crude but powerful printing processes of mass advertising. In 1964 Laing moved to New York and transformed effortlessly from Pop artist to abstract minimalist, showing works in the seminal Primary Structures exhibition of 1966 and forming lasting friendships with leading lights of the US art world, such as Andy Warhol, Larry Poons, Roy Lichtenstein and Larry Bell. A self-imposed exile to a restored Scottish castle in 1969 removed him from the art world’s centre, but allowed him the space to develop a more personal, sculptural vocabulary in which the hard edges of his abstraction gradually gave way to anthropomorphic form. This catalogue raisonné covers each distinct phase of Laing’s career and includes a fully illustrated catalogue of his works alongside comprehensive related reference material: chronology, exhibition history and list of public collections. An introductory essay by Michael Findlay, a close friend of Laing, provides an overview of his artistic development while essays by gallerist Lyndsey Ingram, editor David Knight and Marco Livingstone, a leading authority on Pop Art, examine specific periods and aspects of Laing’s practice.

Gérald Genta is a substantial monograph that explores, for the first time, a lesser-known artistic side to the internationally acclaimed Swiss watchmaker. Aptly named the ‘Picasso of Timepieces’, Genta was also a passionate painter, a facet of his life often overshadowed by his watchmaking fame. This beautifully crafted book, created in collaboration with his estate, showcases the breadth of Genta’s artistic talents, revealing his true passion and creativity. As his wife Evelyne fondly recalls, painting was Genta’s ‘oxygen’, a constant companion throughout his travels and a true reflection of his inner drive. This collection provides a chronological journey through his works, illustrating the effortless unfolding of the figurative compositions into the abstract style of his painterly work. His work reflects a rich tapestry of art historical influences, including the work of Paul Cézanne, Marc Chagall, Wassily Kandinsky, Marie Laurencin, Joan Miró and Amedeo Modigliani, providing a fresh perspective on his creative output. Perfect for art enthusiasts and collectors, this monograph offers a unique opportunity to delve into the lesser-known artistic legacy of Gérald Genta, a master who left an indelible mark on both the watchmaking and art worlds.

Gerald Boland (Gear id Beol in) Irish militant revolutionary, politician and statesman, has until now ranked amongst the forgotten figures of modern Irish history. This book addresses this historical imbalance. Boland's life story offers readers an insight into the birth and subsequent development of the modern Ireland. From a humble working-class family, steeped in the Irish Republican tradition, Boland played an active role in the Irish Revolution and subsequently was at the forefront of political life in the nascent years of the Irish Free State, first as a Sinn F in elected representative and thereafter within Fianna F il. Boland's story thus offers readers a personal insight into many of the major military and political events which helped shape modern Ireland over the duration of his lifetime (1885-1973).Importantly, this biographical study provides readers with a critical examination regarding Gerald Boland's military adventures, political maneuvers and significantly his forgotten role as one of Ireland's eminent state builders. The picture that is painted is of a patriotic adolescent emerging to become a strong-willed militant young man turned politician and later respected (and sometimes feared) government minister.
