1993 erschien die erste Auswahl der Texte (1962-93) herausgegeben von Hans Ulrich Obrist, die seit Jahren vergriffen ist. Die jetzt vorliegende "Gesamtausgabe" beginnt 1961 mit einem Abschiedsbrief Richters an seinen Dresdener Lehrer Heinz Lohmar und ist um fünfzehn unveröffentlichte Beiträge des Zeitraums 1962-93 ergänzt. Sie wird ergänzt durch sämtliche Texte der letzten überaus produktiven und ereignisreichen 14 Jahre und schließt mit Richters Interview vom Sommer 2007 zu seinem Biennalebeitrag in Venedig. Gerhard Richter stellte erstmals sein gesamtes persönliches Archiv zur Verfügung, aus dem auch zahlreiche der meist unveröffentlichten Fotos stammen. Ein wissenschaftlicher Anhang enthält erläuternde Kommentare, Quellen und einen Index. Die Themen der Richterschen "Texte" sind vielfältig und reichen weit über kunstimmanente Fragen hinaus. Es sind Notizen, Tagebuch Eintragungen, zu bestimmten Anlässen entstandene kurze Essays, Briefe, Stellungnahmen, Statements, Manifeste und immer wieder Interviews, Gespräche und Dialoge - die Richter als Form der Mitteilung bevorzugt. Wie kein anderer zeitgenössischer Künstler reflektiert Gerhard Richter in seinen Texten die Frage nach Möglichkeiten, Funktionen und Autonomie von Kunst heute.

Since the early 1960s, Gerhard Richter has tirelessly explored the infinite possibilities of painting and gained status as a highly-celebrated artist worldwide. STRIP-TOWER (962), 2023, expands on the artist’s enduring investigations of painting, photography, digital reproduction and abstraction. Building on his series of Abstract Paintings from the 1970s onwards, and Strip Paintings made since 2011, with STRIPTOWER (962) the artist moves his explorations into three dimensions. Created using glossy ceramic tiles that clad two perpendicular panels to create a cruciform structure of 12 faces, Marcus du Sautoy describes the work as a piece of ‘complexity and simplicity’; its vertically stripes hiding a deeper, symmetrical process. This book commemorates the first public presentation of the work which was organised by Serpentine in London’s Kensington Gardens from April 2024 to February 2025.

Boettcher rightly calls this work a gem. A major value of the book is that Gerhard asks the right questions. If more people asked these questions today, the work of the faithful pastor would be much more direct, and churches where God's Word is purely preached would be full. The questions Gerhard puts into the mouth of the afflicted person may sound strange. But they are the real questions of sufferers, even if most people today would phrase them differently. People have these concerns when facing death. More than anything else, death can still confront modern man with spiritual need. Who but God can help in the face of disease, disaster, and death?The book has been considerably abridged, altered, and adapted. Many statements have been completely rephrased. Ihave been much freer with the text than would be proper if the purpose were scholarly research in Gerhard's thought. The book still presents the original, Biblical, evangelical comfort. But I have taken liberties with the wording to provide a helpful book that will hopefully not be misunderstood in the confusing theological climate of modern America.
