Giuseppe Mazzini's Young Europe and the Birth of Modern Nationalism in the Slavic World
Giuseppe Mazzini’s Young Europe and the Birth of Modern Nationalism in the Slavic World examines the intellectual currents in Eastern Europe that attracted educated youth after the Polish Revolution of 1830–1. Focusing on the political ideas brought to the Slavic world from the West by Polish émigré conspirators, Anna Procyk explores the core message that the Polish revolutionaries carried, a message based on the democratic principles espoused by Young Europe’s founder, Giuseppe Mazzini. Based on archival sources as well as well-documented publications in Eastern Europe, this study highlights that the national awakening among the Czechs, Slovaks, and Galician Ukrainians was not just cultural, as is typically assumed, but political as well. The documentary sources testify that at its inception the political nationalism in Eastern Europe, founded on the humanistic ideals promoted by Mazzini, was republican-democratic in nature and that the clandestine groups in Eastern Europe were cooperating with one another through underground channels. It was through this cooperation during the 1830s that the better-educated Poles and Ukrainians in the political underground tied to Young Europe became aware that the interests of their nations, bound together by the forces of history and political necessity, were best served when they worked closely together.

Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882) was an Italian general and politician who played a large role in the history of Italy. He is considered, with Camillo Cavour, Victor Emmanuel II and Giuseppe Mazzini, as one of Italy's "fathers of the fatherland". Garibaldi was a central figure in the Italian Risorgimento, since he personally commanded and fought in many military campaigns that led eventually to the formation of a unified Italy. He was appointed general by the provisional government of Milan in 1848, General of the Roman Republic in 1849 by the Minister of War, and led the Expedition of the Thousand on behalf and with the consent of Victor Emmanuel II. He has been called the "Hero of Two Worlds" because of his military enterprises in Brazil, Uruguay and Europe. These earned him a considerable reputation in Italy and abroad, aided by exceptional international media coverage at the time. Many of the greatest intellectuals of his time, such as Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, and George Sand, showered him with admiration. The United Kingdom and the United States helped him a great deal, offering him financial and military support in difficult circumstances.

This volume of poetry includes the work inspired by Guiseppe Ungaretti's experience in World War I. This dual language edition is accompanied by his own essays and notes. Giuseppe Ungaretti was born in Alexandria in 1888. In 1912 he left Egypt to study in Paris where he was influenced by the French avant garde. Moving to Milan in 1914, he became a central figure of Italian modernism. His sense of poetic vocation and language was further shaped by his experience of the fierce fighting on the Austrian front during World War I. After the war, Ungaretti lived near Rome until 1936, when he was offered a professorship at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil. The death of his young son, the outbreak of the World War II and the occupation of Rome had a profound effect on his poetry at this time. He returned to Rome in 1942 and taught at the university there until his retirement. He died in Milan in 1970.

The works of no great composer between the twentieth and thetwenty-first centuries have undergone a more spectacular reassessmentthan those of Giuseppe Verdi. His death brought a crowd ofseveral hundred thousand people to mourn not only the passing of agreat artist but also a beloved national hero. It is not surprising that afigure such as Verdi should have inspired an enormous amount ofbooks, articles, essays, and critical evaluation. Today, Verdi scholarsbuild their work on a vast foundation of earlier research. For thosewho have not spent years with Verdi literature or who may just bestarting to explore some aspect of the giant's life and works, thisfoundation may seem daunting indeed. It is primarily for theseresearchers that this volume is intended, although it is hoped thatspecialists will also find it to be useful. Its purpose is to index anddescribe some of the most significant studies about the composerand his music, presenting enough material - in a sort of stream ofconsciousness, using annotations that readers may survey the myriaddirections Verdi research has gone, ascertain the relevance ofindividual items to their individual interests, and easily pursue significantpatterns and threads in which they are interested. This Verdibiography is dealt with as a simple story to be read in one go - inwhich thoughts concerning personal and professional events in hislife flow in simplicity, while continuing to respect the importance ofchronological order.
