Details the life and activism of Gloria Steinem, using her life as a lens through which readers can examine the evolution of women's rights in the United States over the past half-century.This work traces the life and career of the feminist activist, providing an examination of her life and her efforts to further equal opportunity among all people, especially women, in the United States from the second half of the 20th century to the present. It follows Steinem in a primarily chronological fashion to best convey the impact of her own efforts as well as the changing nature of women's status in American society during Steinem's half-century as an active reformer and public figure. The book notably includes her work with Ms. magazine and details of her personal life. This wider coverage of Steinem's life, from her early childhood to the present, adds to previous works, which tend to stop at the height of the women's movement and the rise of the Conservative movement in the early 1980s. With one of the defining aspects of Steinem's work being her lifelong commitment to women's rights and human equality, the treatment of her whole life helps readers understand the full extent of both her commitment and impact.

When Roscoe Caterwaul walked those few blocks to pick up the stunning former model, Gloria Gainey, for a dinner date, he could not have known, could not have guessed, never in a million years, what he was to find. He knew Gloria for a lifetime, since she started first grade at Sarasota Elementary School in 1942. Bad timing never let them have a social life together in their youth, but good timing allowed them to enjoy every day together as they entered the golden years of their lives.Gloria lay dead in a massive pool of blood on the kitchen floor, brutally murdered.Roscoe knew exactly what happened, how, and who. It was Gloria's so-called nephew, Larry, the son of a childhood friend, a constant companion of her own four boys as they were growing up. His rap sheet was long. He did time for robbery, assault, and home invasion. He was on parole for carjacking. His favorite vice was crack cocaine. He hit Aunt Gloria up for money to feed his drug addiction. She fell for the spurious webs he wove. Roscoe told her to knock it off with the money - Larry was swindling her with lies. "What if he comes to the apartment?" She asked. "Don't let him in," Roscoe told her.Well, she did let him in.And nothing would ever again be the same.

Gloria Swanson is most remembered today for her role as “Norma Desmond” in Billy Wilder’s noir sound classic Sunset Boulevard (1950), but Swanson during her heyday was heralded as filmdom’s leading fashion queen, as proclaimed by director Cecil B. DeMille in such silent motion pictures as Male and Female (1919), Why Change YourHusband (1921), and The Affairs of Anatol (1922). Throughout that decade and well into the 1930s Swanson set fashion standards on and off the screen in creations designed by such illustrious couturieres as Mitchell Leisen, Paul Iribe, Norman Norell, Sonia Delaunay, Max Ree, Capt. Edward H. Molyneux, Coco Chanel, Rene Hubert, and later Edith Head. In the 1950s she designed and managed her own line of ready to wear fashion patterns called Forever Young for women of a discernable age. Gloria Swanson: Hollywood’s First Glamour Queen is a photographic tribute to this extraordinary woman. Focusing on sense of style and fashion, the book contains hundreds of personal and professional photographs, many never-before-published, and running biographical commentary by biographer Stephen Michael Shearer, author of the definitive book of the star, Gloria Swanson: TheUltimate Star (St. Martin’s Press-Macmillan).
