A Way Back Home

A Way Back Home

Michael Gordon

A Way Back Home details the fundamental Jewish experience of exile and return as seen through the eyes of one North African Jew, Jacob Cansino of Oran, and two Spanish Catholics, Miguel de Cervantes (author of Don Quixote) and Domingo de Toral y Valdés. These three protagonists maintained an unbreakable bond with the Iberian Peninsula throughout their lives, and their triumphant homecomings facilitated the return of openly practising Jews, both in the flesh and on the page, to Madrid, the capital of the Spanish Empire. This interdisciplinary book underscores the concept of the Iberian Peninsula as the homeland of those expelled fifteenth-century Jews and their descendants, such as royal translator Cansino. Professor of Spanish Michael Gordon also connects Cervantes’s dramatic return to Madrid with much more obscure soldier-writer Toral y Valdés’s. They both were exiled as young men, survived countless military adventures, and had extensive contact with Iberian Jews throughout Muslim lands before coming home to their country of origin. Weaving together literature, history, religious studies, economics, and geography, A Way Back Home creates an interactive, reflective, and dramatic reading experience. Together, these three protagonists’ intertwined lives epitomize the story of Jewish return to Spain more than a century after the 1492 expulsion.
Industrial Locomotives & Railways of London & the Northern Home Counties
Continuing his series looking at the industrial locomotives and railways of England, Wales and Scotland, Gordon Edgar looks at Greater London and the counties of Middlesex, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire and Hertfordshire, a region that rapidly expanded during the twentieth century around the traditional shipping routes into London’s docklands and the numerous rail routes serving the capital, in particular from the north and west. The period of time covered by this volume stretches from the early 1950s to the present day, with Gordon utilising his and other contributors’ rare and previously unpublished photographs, both in colour and black and white, to document the fascinating history of industry in this region.

Island Follies is the first book to explore the work of Henry Melich (1924-1999), a Czech-born architect who brought a beguiling form of neoclassicism to the Caribbean. While Melich built projects in the United States and England, he s best remembered for the romantic follies he designed in the 1960s and 1970s in sunny island retreats like Lyford Cay, Harbour Island, and Windermere Island in the Bahamas. Melich created a romantic sense of escape with a softly cushioned whimsy and discrete sense of tranquillity. His signature motifs included faux marbled walls, seasoned wood, colonnades and tent-like interiors with striped ceilings that suited the playful mood of the moment, documented in Island Follies with the warm touch of Slim Aarons and with new photography of many previously unpublished interiors. Gardens with Bougainvillea-draped pergolas, ivy-clad alcoves, palm-lined allees are just some of the other features that extended the architecture into the tropical landscape. Island Follies showcases more than forty of Melich s island projects, capturing a lost world of glamor and faded glory certain to inspire lovers of interior design and island retreats alike.
Religion vs. Reality: Facing the Home Front in Spiritual Warfare
Since Jesus, religion is obsolete."Go figure out what this Scripture means: 'I'm after mercy, not religion.'I'm here to invite outsiders, not to coddle insiders." (Matt. 9:13,14TMB) Shortly before the prequel to this book No Small Snakes: A Journey into Spiritual Warfare went to press, my then-teenaged son and I were enjoying the summer breeze on a late-night drive in our trusty old convertible. Just that morning, I had carefully folded the windshield sunscreen and stuffed it securely under the back of the driver's seat so it wouldn't blow away with the top down. That night in the outside lane, as a pickup was about to pass us, we were startled by a loud Pop Fwhoosh Suddenly, the sunscreen leapt out behind us from under the driver's seat and flew up above us and foreword, unfolded, and fell spread-out across our faces. In a flash of blindness, we sideswiped the pickup and shot off the freeway. Slamming from 65 to zero in seconds, an explosive blast of impact left us stunned and wedged under a foot-thick tree branch just inches above the windshield. Dazed, and covered with leaves and dirt, we managed to pull ourselves out of the wreckage and debris. Soon afterwards, a patrolman arrived to find my son and me trembling and holding each other, dusty and trembling. The grey-haired officer studied the crumpled remains of our beloved sports car wedged under the huge branch-low enough to have crushed through the windshield and cabin of any sedan. Finally, he shook his head in amazement and turned to my son. "Do you go to church?" he asked. Shaken, but alive and filled with grace, we both nodded. This book, like its prequel, presumes that ours is a planet at war. What's more, the enemy of God quite deliberately attacks first and most fiercely those surrendered to Jesus, because we're the only ones capable of recognizing and empowered to overcome the kingdom of darkness. Those who are not surrendered to Jesus dare not even see the battle, because they have no power to win it. Thus opting out of the battle into denial, they bear no threat to the enemy (see 1 Corinth. 2:14). Spiritual warfare, that is, allows no conscientious objectors, but only deluded deserters and persevering victors. To withdraw is neither honorable nor safe-but simply to capitulate to the enemy, whose objective is precisely to remove opposition from the battlefield. I pray this book will stir you not only to acknowledge the battle in the larger world, but indeed, to face it within yourself; not to surrender to the enemy's deceptions as a comfortably ensconced POW, but to surrender to Father God as an active, victorious combatant. The Father of us all has set our destiny.Jesus has blazed the trail.Holy Spirit has empowered us to get there.History awaits us. Religion fabricates relationship with God.Tragically, few people today, even in the Church, dare to face and walk in this reality. Proudly, we discount spiritual power and trust instead in our own. This denial sustains religion as an unholy distraction from what God is doing and thereby, marks it as a tool of God's enemy. The enemy of God hides in religion...In fact, the increasing work of evil among us today-from warmaking, family breakups, and gender confusion to addictions, racism, and corporate greed-reveals graphically both our desperate need for saving power and the inability of religion to provide it. ... but the heart of God shines in Jesus.Chapters include Christmas after 9/11, Terrorism and Spiritual Warfare, Secularization and White Racism, Homosexuality: Outing the Man-Hating Spirit, Hollywood's X-Rated Spirituality, Ball Games and the Battle for Men's Souls, Old Demons in the New Age, Depression or Expression?, But Is Jesus the Only Way?, The Commandment to Enjoy, and Unmasking Halloween.

Standing for Something: 10 Neglected Virtues That Will Heal Our Hearts and Homes
In this national bestseller, the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gordon B. Hinckley, has created a classic look at the values that can change our world--and how to stand up for them. Drawing on anecdotes from his much-admired life of faith and service, as well as examples from American culture today, he examines ten virtues that have always illuminated the path to a better world: love, honesty, morality, civility, learning, forgiveness and mercy, thrift and industry, gratitude, optimism, and faith. He then shows how the two guardians of virtue--marriage and the family--can keep us on that path, even in difficult times. Standing for Something is an inspiring blueprint for what we all can do--as individuals, as a nation, and as a world community--to rediscover the values and virtues that have historically made us strong and that will lead us to a brighter future.

'Of what use is one ugly little tree?' Atop a windswept hill, a crooked little tree stands alone...until one Christmas Eve, when an old woman labors up the hill with a box of ornaments, and tells the tree that he is special. He is to be the official Christmas tree for all of the homeless people in the city below!Year after year, colored balls and garland adorn the tree at Christmastime, but one year, the woman does not come. Will there be a Christmas for homeless? This story is based on actual events about a funny-looking mimosa tree that sits above a busy freeway in Fort Worth, Texas. A formerly homeless woman decorated the tree, year after year, so that the homeless would have a Christmas tree. When she died, neighbors took over the custom and now decorate it for Easter, Halloween, and other holidays as well. It can be seen on the north side of Interstate 30 near the Oakland exit.

How much does the condition of our housing affect our health? This timely new study looks in detail at the impact poor housing has on health, using data from the National Child Development Study (NCDS). It provides important information to inform the current debate on Our Healthier Nation and to strengthen arguments for health, housing and social care agencies to work together. It focuses on three main areas: if, and when, housing deprivation impacts on overall health; the link between overcrowding and respiratory and infectious disease; housing deprivation and health in the context of other possible influences on health. The study uses the innovative approach of creating indices for both the severity of ill-health and housing deprivation. These indices are incorporated into an analysis of the impact over time of housing deprivation upon health. The authors conclude that housing plays a significant role in health outcomes and hence provides support for the argument that addressing housing deprivation should be central to thinking about health improvement. Home Sweet Home? is essential reading for researchers and students in housing, public health, urban renewal, and social policy as well as professionals working in these areas.
