The Portable Jack London

The Portable Jack London

Jack London

PENGUIN BOOKS LTD

Alfred Kazin has aptly remarked that "the greatest story Jack London ever wrote was the story he lived." Newsboy, factory "work beast," gang member, hobo, sailor, Klondike argonaut, socialist crusader, war correspondent, utopian farmer, and world-famous adventurer: London is the closest thing America has had to a literary folk hero. His writing itself is concerned with nothing less than the largest questions and the grandest themes: What does it mean to be a human being in the natural world? What debts do human beings owe each other - and to all their fellow creatures? This collection places London, at last, securely within the American literary pantheon. It includes the complete novel The Call of the Wild; such famous stories as "Love of Life," "To Build a Fire," and "All Gold Canyon"; journalism, political writings, literary criticism, and selected letters.

This definitive Kerouac collection--the only anthology of his work ever published--is an essential introduction to one of the country's most influential writers. "Kerouac's work represents the most extensive experiment in language and literary form undertaken by an American writer of his generation."--The New York Times Book Review This one-volume omnibus, planned by Kerouac himself before his death and completed by his biographer, Ann Charters, makes clear the ambition and accomplishment of Jack Kerouac's "Legend of Duluoz"--the story of his life told in the course of his many "true-story novels." As Kerouac once wrote, "The whole thing forms one enormous comedy, seen through the eyes of poor Ti Jean (me), otherwise known as Jack Duluoz, the world of raging action and folly and also of gentle sweetness seen through the keyhole of his eye." This compilation presents selections from the "Legend of Duluoz" novels, in chronological order, from Dr. Sax to On the Road to Big Sur, and also includes poetry, letters, and essays on Buddhism, writing, and the Beat Generation. The Portable Jack Kerouac offers a total immersion in the mind of an American master. Penguin Classics is the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world, representing a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

" An] essential Beat masterpiece." --The Village Voice. Perhaps one of the last great dual correspondences of the twentieth century, Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg: The Letters reveals not only the process of creation of the two most celebrated members of the Beat Generation, but also the unfolding of a remarkable friendship of immense pathos and spiritual depth. Through this exhilarating exchange of letters, two-thirds of which have never been published before, Kerouac and Ginsberg emerge first and foremost as writers of artistic passion, innovation, and genius. Vivid and enthralling, the letters, which date from their first meeting in 1944 to Kerouac's untimely death in 1969, chronicle the endless struggle, anguish, and sacrifice involved in giving form to their literary visions.

Jack Cade's Rebellion of 1450

Jack Cade's Rebellion of 1450

I. M. W. Harvey

Clarendon Press
1991
sidottu
Jack Cade's rebellion of 1450 was one of the most important popular uprisings to take place in England during the Middle Ages. It began as an orchestrated demonstration of political protest by the inhabitants of south-eastern England against the corruption, mismanagement, and oppression of Henry VI's government. When no assurance of any remedy came from the king the rising soon collapsed into violence. This is the first full-length study of Cade's revolt to be published this century. I. M. W. Harvey charts the course of the rebellion and its associated troubles during the early 1450s, and explores the nature of the society which gave rise to these upheavals. She makes full use of the available contemporary evidence, as well as the work of subsequent historians, in order to uncover the identities of the rebels, explain their actions, assess their relations with the magnates, and to examine their achievements. Dr Harvey's lucid and scholarly analysis of Jack Cade's rebellion helps make intelligible the eventual collapse of Henry VI's reign into the Wars of the Roses.

Jack Goldstein

Alexander Dumbadze

THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO PRESS

A poignant account of the life and work of conceptual artist Jack Goldstein. A defining figure of the 1970s–80s New York art world, Jack Goldstein’s wide-ranging body of work, which included immaculate color films and radiant paintings of appropriated images composed by assistants, is both seductive and interpretively elusive. Goldstein’s legacy has been complicated by the mythology of his later years. Consumed by drug addiction, he dropped out of the art world in the 1990s, lived alone in an East Los Angeles trailer park, and resurfaced in a wave of critical fanfare at the turn of the millennium, before taking his own life in 2003. Employing his signature blend of biography, theoretical reflection, and archival research, Alexander Dumbadze examines Goldstein’s life and career, homing in on the artist’s refusal to distinguish between mental and actual images. Progressing chronologically through key moments in Goldstein’s artistic and intellectual formation, the book offers a deeply complex portrait of this significant artist, along with a nuanced meditation on the nature of images, the meaning of artistic subjectivity, and the consequences of holding unwavering faith in art.

Through these true stories, I wanted to tell a reality that is not often told, or realized by the general public.Nursing is a very demanding job, no matter what field you work in. Most nurses are hard-working, conscientious, and display empathy when most people would not be able to. Sadly, some nurses are not up to the task, I must admit, which often results in negligence. Often people - our patients - suffer because of this. This book tells several true stories about nurses and doctors alike who have sex with their patients, and each other. Also, it talks about rape, and how hospital staff have covered it up. I have written about drug and alcohol abuse on the job. Even cases where nurses deprived their own patients of narcotics, or pain killers, only to ingest them themselves, and give their patients a placebo. Some stories outline how nursing staff are so very often injured and knowingly placed in danger. Often both the doctor and management could have easily intervened to help avoid these incidents.Sadly, I talk about the many child molesters and rapists who are let out to roam the streets, against the nursing staff's wishes. These same patients reoffend regularly. The general public should know what really goes on as there are many horrible things that happen due to negligence or greed. It is important to make note of these realities. The majority of staff I have worked with have impressed me on countless occasions with their empathy, dedication, and self-sacrifice to help their patients. Like most things in life, it only takes a few bad apples to spoil everything."If you're a fan of ER or Grey's Anatomy, you'll want to read this book."
