Janet Does Everything: A Poetical Hodgepodge for Children, Adults and the Undecided is an eclectic collection of verse in the tradition of such rhymesters as Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear and W. S. Gilbert. Subjects range from the remarkable Janet (who does everything) to Vlad the Impaler (really ) to chihuahuas encountering alien spacecraft to ravenous tigers and Old Testament prophets on vacation. Not enough? You'll also find political and cultural critiques (sometimes brutal, but always softened by humor) and a touch of pure surrealism. Looking for overblown bogus Shakespearean verse? That's here, too.Janet Does Everything is the work of Van Evan Fuller, who (through some remarkable coincidence) is also the illustrator. Mr. Fuller has been an artist/illustrator since 1980, when computers were powered by kerosene and the only Amazon was full of piranhas. As a semi-ancient person, Mr. Fuller writes in the intricate, traditional style that strictly observes the rules of rhyme and meter. He ignores the rules for everything else.

Janet Darnell’s childhood in Texas during the Roaring Twenties and the Depression imbued her with resilience and practical skills, largely acquired on her grandparents’ farm. Aged 19 she took a bus to New York City where she found work as a sculptor’s assistant. During the Second World War she worked on Staten Island welding the hulls and bows of ten US Navy destroyers. After discovering pottery she met Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada at a Black Mountain College seminar where her love of pottery was sealed. She then spent two years potting in Japan where she met Bernard again and he proposed marriage. They planned to build a pottery near Kyoto but two years absence from the Leach Pottery obliged Bernard to return to Cornwall and a year later, in 1956, Janet reluctantly left Japan, persuaded to join him in St.Ives, a place unknown to her, in a country she had never visited. There she stayed for over 40 years, as manager of the world-famous Leach Pottery, while also making her own remarkable pots.
Janet Russek: The Tenuous Stem
In 1993, Janet Russek began a series of still lifes of ripe squashes, peaches and pears whose rounded forms echoed the plenitude of pregnancy. Using only natural light, she then started to photograph vegetables and roots whose tendrils, reaching for the sun, expressed all of life’s striving and aspiration, and finally, the maturing plant, evoking the inevitable downward spiral into decay. In subsequent years, Russek has expanded the project to include pregnant women photographed at close range so that bellies and breasts become almost abstract. Her haunting portraits of dolls explore the darker, more psychologically complex side of childhood and parenting, while the Memory series includes photos of significant personal objects that harken to the past, and take this volume full circle. The Tenuous Stem also includes an essay, written by art scholar and critic MaLin Wilson-Powell, addressing Russek’s creative process.
Works by Janet Grierson: on Frances Ridley Havergal
Frances Ridley Havergal's written works in poetry, prose, and music are a rarely valuable treasure chest, a goldmine, and just as surely, accounts of her lived out life have so much benefit to others. For the centenary of F.R.H.'s death in 1979, when few were interested in F.R.H.'s life and works, Miss Janet Grierson (1913-2011) wrote and published a biography of Havergal, Frances Ridley Havergal: Worcestershire Hymnwriter. After that she wrote another book on her, Singing for Jesus, a golden study centered around several of her hymns; this second book remained in manuscript, never published, and was entrusted by Miss Grierson to David Chalkley in 2002. David, the compiler and editor of The Complete Works of Frances Ridley Havergal, has included in the Havergal edition both of Miss Grierson's books, and also a few articles by her that were found. He was honored and blessed to meet and know Miss Grierson in 2002, and her help in the preparation of the edition was invaluable. Several times he has said that Grierson's writings were the most important work on Havergal since Frances' sister Maria V. G. Havergal's work in the 19th century. Janet Grierson was richly blessed with ability, a brilliant scholar and a fine writer. These two books are overflowing with so many details on F.R.H.'s life and works, and give so much insight into this sweet psalmist of Worcestershire. A Personal Note: The 17th century gold-mine poet George Herbert wrote (in Outlandish that is, "Foreign" like the German Ausl nder, "outside the land," not our meaning of "absurd"] Proverbs, No. 50), "A dwarf on a giant's shoulder sees further of the two." I stood on Miss Janet Grierson's shoulder. I also stood on another's shoulder: I stood on Glen Wegge's shoulder. Both of these two were profoundly valuable in this work, and the Havergal edition would not be nearly what it is without their involvement. They were the Lord's provision. Thanks be to God. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New Mexico–based photographers David Scheinbaum (born 1951) and Janet Russek (born 1947) started photographing New York’s Lower East Side in 1999, and have chronicled a time of extraordinary transformation. Undergoing rapid gentrification into a “hipster” neighborhood, the future of the Lower East Side is now unclear. In 2008, the National Trust for Historic Preservation added the neighborhood to its list of America’s Most Endangered Places, and many believe the cultural institutions and ideologies that established the Lower East Side are disappearing forever. Throughout its history, New York’s Lower East Side has reflected the cultural demographics of the city and fostered a rich cultural environment for immigrant life, becoming the home to many ethnic groups. With this volume, Scheinbaum and Russek capture remnants of history through their intimate portraits of iconic places such as Katz's Deli, Essex Street Market, Orchard Corset and Streit's Matzo.

An Invincible Spirit – The Story of Don Fulk, As signed to Janet Allen
"Don taught us how to be a real independent living center. Nothing was easy; every issue that came up on the road to Don's independence was a challenge and a struggle, but the experience pushed us and we learned from it. We were not going to let Don down; all of us were committed to Don's freedom and independence." --Kathleen Kleinman, Executive Director, TRPIL (Transitional Paths to Independent Living) Profoundly deafened as an infant, Don Fulk didn't learn his name or go to school until the age of ten. When he was eighteen years old and a budding superstar on his football and basketball teams, he broke his neck in a swimming accident, and became paralyzed. After his injury, he was confined to a bed in his parents' home for eight years, unable to move and barely able to communicate. After his family could no longer care for him, he spent nine years in a nursing home where he suffered from abuse and neglect. Yet through a life marred by isolation and frustration, Fulk endured with strength, humor, and grace. He never gave up pursuing his dreams for independence and self-worth, and improving the lives of others. He fought a system that was unfair and discriminatory, and helped pave the way for people with disabilities to live independently. Don Fulk signed his story to author Janet Allen, describing his difficult home life, the incredible friends who changed his life, and his dramatic escape from an abusive nursing home. An Invincible Spirit is a story of hope, empowerment, and the battles people with disabilities have fought--and continue to fight--to improve the quality of their lives.

"Janet Cooke was a warning shot, a harbinger of all kinds of journalistic scandals to come." --Howard Kurtz, author and media critic Janet Cooke caused one of the biggest scandals in the history of journalism when her Pulitzer Prize-winning article, about an eight-year-old heroin addict, turned out to be a fabrication. Cooke, a reporter for the Washington Post, worked under the legendary editors Ben Bradlee and Bob Woodward. Her disgrace was a jarring wakeup call for the news industry. Cooke's transgressions rocked the foundations of public trust the press had built since the Vietnam and Watergate eras, when the 4th Estate was seen as a force for objective reporting and an advocate for the public good. Immediately, Cooke became infamous, the first in a line of publicly exposed fabulists, including Stephen Glass of the New Republic and Jayson Blair of the New York Times. Cooke's case also came to symbolize myriad issues in journalism and beyond: i the use of unnamed sources, diversity recruitment, newsroom ethics, resume fraud, and the tendency of some writers, operating in the genre known as creative nonfiction, to take license in the pursuit of more literary storytelling. Janet's World, written by her former boyfriend and fellow Post staffer Mike Sager, is Cooke's only in-depth interview. While faithful to the basic fact-finding contained in the Washington Post's internal investigation of the case, easily available online, Sager's work plums the depths of Cooke's persona and upbringing, bringing to light the human story behind the headlines. Vilified by history as a fabricator, Cooke's difficult role as an African American professional woman in the early 1980s is often overlooked. The book also contains new material documenting the effects of the Cooke scandal on the 35th anniversary of the events.
