It's been only a few months since archaeologist Ruth Galloway found herself entangled in a missing persons case, barely escaping with her life. But when construction workers demolishing a large old house in Norwich uncover the bones of a child beneath a doorway--minus its skull--Ruth is once again called upon to investigate. Is it a Roman-era ritual sacrifice, or is the killer closer at hand?Ruth and Detective Harry Nelson would like to find out--and fast. When they realize the house was once a children's home, they track down the Catholic priest who served as its operator. Father Hennessey reports that two children did go missing from the home forty years before--a boy and a girl. They were never found. When carbon dating proves that the child's bones predate the home and relate to a time when the house was privately owned, Ruth is drawn ever more deeply into the case. But as spring turns into summer it becomes clear that someone is trying very hard to put her off the trail by frightening her, and her unborn child, half to death.
In this "chilling and entirely believable"* mystery, forensic archaeologist Ruth Galloway and DCI Harry Nelson investigate a set of remains buried in the foundations of an old country manor--but as soon as they get close to cracking the case, Ruth becomes the killer's next target. *Richmond Times-Dispatch When a child's remains are found at a demolition site--a former children's home in Norwich--forensic archaeologist Ruth Galloway is called in to examine the bones. She quickly notes that the skull is missing. Is this a Roman-era ritual sacrifice, or is the killer closer at hand? Ruth and DCI Nelson seek out the priest who served as the home's operator. Father Hennessey reports that two children had gone missing there, about forty years earlier. They were never found. Is this one of them, finally unearthed? Or another child altogether? Ruth is drawn into the case, but soon it becomes clear that someone is trying very hard to put her off the trail by frightening her, and her unborn child, half to death.

The Challenge of Migration in a Janus-Faced Europe

This book critically investigates the origins and consequences of the Janus-faced character of attitudes and policies towards migrants that seek to penetrate “Fortress Europe”. Beginning with an examination of its founding ambitions, it locates the roots of an ingrained ambivalence in the legacies of the post-war period and the unresolved tension between the economicism of the European approach to labour migration and the philosophy of rights and solidarity embedded in the EU project. It highlights how the formalization of citizenship rights has produced both formal pathways towards inclusion for migrants and, in their selective eligibility criteria, exclusive systems of civic stratification. The author links this oscillation between positions of closure and openness to the paradoxical trade-offs in migration policies, in particular labour market integration, demonstrated through unequal labour market outcomes, lower social mobility and educational attainments. The issues faced by migrants’ offspring in Europe are examined as paradigmatic of the struggle to balance competing calls for both pluralism and uniformity: to create a diverse society that can also project a homogenous collective identity. This balanced overview will provide an invaluable resource for students of migration studies, European politics, public policy, international relations and the sociology of racism.

Janie Montgomery at thirty-two did something she thought made her crazy or a fool. When most women her age were settling into a career, she chose to quit hers and open her own business. Moving to Edenton, North Carolina and into the small home her grandmother left, she took change one step further by starting a business she knew nothing about. But she had a plan. When she discovered handsome Alexander Drake had opened an office next door to hers, she was a little apprehensive. His little ankle-biter, Puddles, had tripped her up, and gotten their acquaintance off to a rocky start. Little did she know that the trip up in the park would lead to things not in her business plan.
