As a young girl growing up in Kenya, Wangari was surrounded by trees. So Wangari decides to do something - and starts by planting nine seedlings in her own backyard. And as they grow, so do her plans...

Lighthousekeeping

Lighthousekeeping tells the tale of Silver ("My mother called me Silver. I was born part precious metal, part pirate."), an orphaned girl who is taken in by blind Mr. Pew, the mysterious and miraculously old keeper of a lighthouse on the Scottish coast. Pew tells Silver stories of Babel Dark, a nineteenth-century clergyman. Dark lived two lives: a public one mired in darkness and deceit and a private one bathed in the light of passionate love. For Silver, Dark's life becomes a map through her own darkness, into her own story, and, finally, into love. One of the most original and extraordinary writers of her generation, Jeanette Winterson has created a modern fable about the transformative power of storytelling.

The Whitbread Prize-winning author of Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit delivers a novel that "transports us to something like the future of our own planet" (Washington Post Book World). On the airwaves, all the talk is of the new blue planet -- pristine and plentiful, as our own was 65 million years ago, before we took it to the edge of destruction. Off the air, Billie Crusoe and the renegade Robo sapien Spike are falling in love. Along with Captain Handsome and Pink, they're assigned to colonize the new blue planet. But when a technical maneuver intended to make it habitable backfires, Billie and Spike's flight to the future becomes a surprising return to the distant past, and they discover that "everything is imprinted forever with what once was."
Working With Homeless and Vulnerable People

Working With Homeless and Vulnerable People

Jeanette Waegemakers Schiff

Oxford University Press Inc
2015
nidottu
It has long been established that access to food, clothing, medical care, and housing are fundamental human rights the world over. Helping the approximately 600,000 Americans and 300,000 Canadians who are currently homeless work toward this goal is a complex undertaking. This text presents the fundamental knowledge and skills that frontline workers need in order to help vulnerable and homeless persons. It provides readers with both an understanding of the lived experiences of those who have faced homelessness and an outline of the interprofessional practice context of services for homeless people. Waegemakers Schiff focuses on the interventions and best practices that have been found to be most effective in making connections, establishing helping relationships, and working with individuals on moving toward stabilization.
Reference

Reference

sidottu
The ability to produce and understand referring expressions is basic to human language use and human cognition. Reference comprises the ability to think of and represent objects (both real and imagined/fictional), to indicate to others which of these objects we are talking about, and to determine what others are talking about when they use a nominal expression. The articles in this volume are concerned with some of the central themes and challenges in research on reference within the cognitive sciences - philosophy (including philosophy of language and mind, logic, and formal semantics), theoretical and computational linguistics, and cognitive psychology. The papers address four basic questions: What is reference? What is the appropriate analysis of different referring forms, such as pronouns vs. full noun phrases, demonstrative vs. personal pronouns, and overt vs. null/zero pronominal forms? Some of the papers assume and build on existing theories, such as Centering Theory and the Givenness Hierarchy framework; others propose their own models of reference understanding or production. The essays examine reference from a number of disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives, informed by different research traditions and employing different methodologies. While the contributors to the volume were primarily trained in one of four represented disciplines - computer science, linguistics, philosophy and psychology, and use methodologies typical of that discipline, each of them bridges more than one discipline in their methodology and/or their approach.
Born and Bred

Born and Bred

Jeanette Edwards

Oxford University Press
2000
sidottu
Born and Bred is an ethnography of Bacup in the north-west of England. At the heart of the cotton industry in the nineteenth century, this Lancashire town has undergone deep social and economic change during the twentieth, yet it remains a hive of social activity. The book dwells on the way in which the past features large in people's talk about the place and about each other, but it questions the claim that such a preoccupation is simply due to nostalgia for better times. Narratives about the past, like narratives about the kind of place Bacup is, mobilize cultural understandings of kinship, which are also deployed when people talk about the implications of new reproductive technologies. Jeanette Edwards argues that kinship is resonant in the way in which residents of the town belong to pasts, places and persons. She challenges the idea that kinship is no longer an organizing principle in post-industrial Western society.
Agency and Responsibility

Agency and Responsibility

Jeanette Kennett

Clarendon Press
2003
nidottu
Is it ever possible for people to act freely and intentionally against their better judgement? Is it ever possible to act in opposition to one's strongest desire? If either of these questions are answered in the negative, the common-sense distinctions between recklessness, weakness of will and compulsion collapse. This would threaten our ordinary notion of self-control and undermine our practice of holding each other responsible for moral failure. So a clear and plausible account of how weakness of will and self-control are possible is of great practical significance. Taking the problem of weakness of will as her starting point, Jeanette Kennett builds an admirably comprehensive and integrated account of moral agency which gives a central place to the capacity for self-control. Her account of the exercise and limits of self-control vindicates the common-sense distinction between weakness of will and compulsion and so underwrites our ordinary allocations of moral responsibility. She addresses with clarity and insight a range of important topics in moral psychology, such as the nature of valuing and desiring, conceptions of virtue, moral conflict, and the varieties of recklessness (here characterised as culpable bad judgement) - and does so in terms which make their relations to each other and to the challenges of real life obvious. Agency and Responsibility concludes by testing the accounts developed of self-control, moral failure, and moral responsibility against the hard cases provided by acts of extreme evil.

"Grandsire Atom, who had been snoring in his easy chair up until the Molecules' conversation interrupted his snooze, broke into laughter so hearty that he nearly split himself in two. How he loved his offspring, his adored grand-offspring, and all that binds family awkwardness-even the hyper-reactive free radicals, the overly excited atomic and molecular grandchildren diagnosed with Electron-Deficient Orbital, a syndrome occurring even in the best of families, all delightfully sparkling their unique energy levels. Grandmother Universal Constants blew a subtle kiss at her adored sons and daughters, and the infants they begat.""The Isotopes & the Molecules makes you aware that our feisty universe is vibrantly alive in ways you might otherwise not imagine." - David Alexander

Quest is a six-level primary series first published for Spain. It is aimed at children who have little or no previous knowledge of English. The course was developed with the aim of establishing a new approach to primary courses. Therefore, the course remains story-based for Levels 1 and 2, but moves towards being content based in upper levels, with levels 5 and 6 using stories more overlty as a means of exploring content, and cultural values are much more topic based in those higher levels. The course contains a strong CLIL element right from the start and there is also a constant focus on phonics throughout the course. The course was felt suitable for adaptation to meet the needs of some international markets, but for that to be successful various fundamental changes have had to be made to Levels 1 and 2. The International version of Quest has no reading/writing requirement in Level 1 and a reduced requirement in Level 2, starting a third of the way into the book. Designed to meet the needs of markets where reading and writing at early stages is not acceptable Cohesive 6-level course with continuity between the levels Careful combination of methodologies in different levels, to best match the needs of the developing child and their changing interests and level of maturity Integrated phonics stream Comprehensive portfolio material CLIL material A good range of support components
