In the light of dramatic new interpretative approaches to the Bible this guide to Job follows not only a range of new approaches to the text but also addresses the traditional historical questions and other topical issues. Dell particularly highlights the problem of genre in understanding Job. She shows how problematic the term ‘wisdom’ is for this unique book, and argues that its radical sentiments earn it, rather, the title of ‘parody’. Of all the biblical books it comes closest to tragedy, raising profound questions about its nature and place in the biblical canon.Job’s relationship to its ancient Near Eastern counterparts, notably in ancient Mesopotamia, are also closely examined and key theological themes that characterize the book are explored. Finally different approaches - feminist, liberationist, ecological and psychological - are outlined so as to illuminate and inform our own personal readings and generate ever fresh understandings of this enigmatic text.

The book of Job is regarded as one of the wisdom books found in the Old Testament, fit for all times and all people. It speaks of the sufferings of a blessed man by the name of Job who has to deal with many tribulations as well as the accusations of his friends. In all this, Job maintains his love for God even though he loses patience with his sufferings and challenges the command of God towards the end of the book.It can be a very confusing book due to the many different characters and the excessive dialogue but the message is still made very clear and the book is very easily relatable to as a result. In these final chapters the Lord, who had been silent throughout the trials of Job previously, speaks up and questions Job regarding the secrets of the universe to which Job has no response.God, in the midst of Job's anguish, revealed Himself to him to show that He is the one in charge and Job, being the weak human that he is, will not understand why God is dealing with him in this way. In this manner, Job is a character that we can very easily relate to as we learn how to deal with pain and misery in the world while we continue in our spiritual struggle and trying to keep faith in God.At times when it feels like we've hit rock bottom it may be hard to see God working in our lives but as we learn through the life of Job, it's the times that are darkest when God chooses to reveal His light.

Goldingay's careful and compelling commentary explores the book of Job's enduring message and is perfect for daily devotion, Sunday school preparation, or brief visits with the Bible.

Job Quest: How to Become the Insider Who Gets Hired

In her book Job Quest: How to Become the Insider Who Gets Hired, Sheila Markin Nielsen spells out what so many of us already suspected, that people with personal connections, the insiders, have a tremendous advantage when it comes to landing jobs. It's not that daddy pulls the strings. Instead, it is a personal relationship that the job seeker has created with someone known and trusted by the workplace that opens the doors. In this book she tells everyone how to develop the insider advantage for their job searches through a process of rapid relationship and trust building. Ms. Nielsen illuminates the often murky experience that is a relationship-building job search by breaking the process down into a series of concrete, easy-to-follow steps. She uses a game approach and an analogy to a medieval quest to help the reader understand what to look for and how to move forward in the search. She explains what luck has to do with it (and how to create your own), how to prepare for the quest, how to get around the resume-blocking gatekeepers (the dragons who guard the hiring managers), how to find key people to connect with (your knights and wizards), what to say once you connect with them, how to continue building your connections, how to interview, when to start using the word "job," when to go for the close, and how to give back to your connections. She also provides a summary of the four overarching quest concepts, the common pitfalls, a narrative of a successful quest, and appendices with exercises to support the quest. Her advice is direct, practical, and wise, based on over 25 years of professional counseling experience. Job seekers in all stages of their careers will benefit from reading this book.
