In Julius Caesar Shakespeare links the problem of treachery between Roman men with the institution of marriage, and with men’s dissociation from women. He asked his first audience to recognise in the Rome that he represents features of the England in which they were living themselves: a state ruled by fear where the connection between keeping control over religious observance and maintaining the authority of the government was evident to all. This new reading offers an account of the historical figure of Caesar and of the Roman tradition that he has come to represent, while throwing Shakespeare’s own scepticism about the heritage of Rome into relief. Approaches drawn from object relations theory and from cultural history are combined with a sense of the work in performance to develop a detailed close reading of the language and of the interactions of the play.

This book is a splendid profile of an extraordinary man, and a radically new interpretation of one of the most controversial figures in history. Caesar played a leading role in the politics and culture of a world empire, dwarfing his contemporaries in ambition, achievement and appetite. For that, he has occupied a central place in the political imagination of Europe ever since. Yet he remains something of an enigma, struck down by his own lieutenants because he could be neither comprehended nor contained. In surviving evidence he emerges as incommensurate and nonpareil, just beyond the horizons of contemporary political thought and understanding. The result of Luciano Canfora's many years of research is a fascinating portrait of the Roman dictator, combining the evidence of political history and psychology. The product of a comprehensive study of the ancient sources, it paints an astonishingly detailed portrait of a complex personality whose mission of 'Romanisation' lies at the root of modern Europe. Key Features * Easy, engaging and pleasurable to read * About 42 chronological studies of events create a full portrait of Caesar and the contemporary Roman background * Space is devoted to the details surrounding his assassination

Why is Caesar a giant? Because he effectively created the Roman Empire, and thus made possible the European civilization that grew out of it. As the People's champion against a corrupt and murderous oligarchy, he began transformation of the Roman republic into a quasi-monarchy and a military and fiscal system that for four centuries provided western Europe, north Africa and the Middle East with security, prosperity and relative peace. His conquest of Gaul and his successors' conquests of Germany, the Balkans and Britain created both the conditions for 'western culture' and many of the historic cities in which it has flourished.

Aurora Stewart de Peña

Strange Light

A Globe and Mail Best Book of the Summer With biting wit, Aurora Stewart de Pe a satirizes the creative industry she's spent years in. From the people who brought you the invention of advertising comes Julius Julius, a rambling architectural wonder, outpost of the very first ad man of ancient Pompeii, built on the backs of generations of creative survivors who just want to lie on the floor of a conference room and cry about the lumber account without being sexually harassed. Welcome to the world's oldest advertising agency, where ghosts control the board room AC, an ancient executive assistant runs a cave full of thousand year old billboards, and there are bones in the walls. In a trio of voices from different time periods, we move through the mythical Agency, interrogating the process of stoking desire for a living. We meet the Senior Brand Anthropologist, who's being surprised by dirty bars of Irish Spring she can't remember buying, the Creative Director, whose ascent involved an ad campaign starring his dead best friend, and the Account Supervisor, whose only crime is not being a genius. (But the Fisherman Jack Tuna Campaign was her idea, despite what it says on the awards submissions.) Stewart de Pe a's debut novel reveals the cracks in the veneer of the creative industries, and the crisis of consciousness underneath in a novel full of compassion, humour, and blonde sausage dogs.

Julius Finn was born in Russian Poland, and came to New York in 1887 at the age of 16. From a humble start as a street peddler on the Lower East Side, Finn swiftly rose to become New York's champion chess master and one of the country's best blindfold chess entertainers. Finn's chess success contributed to the rise of the chess scene in the Big Apple in the early twentieth century, and he fared equally well in business, parlaying his skills into a highly successful career. Along with a foreword by John S. Hilbert, this biography of Finn in America includes analysis of 99 of his chess games-- most of them previously unknown or little studied--diagrams of game situations, and photographs.

German Impressionist artist Julius Seyler had already made a name for himself in Europe when America beckoned. While in St. Paul, Minnesota, he encountered Louis Hill, head of the Great Northern Railroad, who wanted to encourage travel to Montana's newly created Glacier National Park. To that end, Hill enticed the adventuresome Seyler to visit this majestic landscape and to see the Blackfeet Indians who lived there. This book marks both an appreciation of Seyler's unique art and a fascinating glimpse into the promotion of a national park in its early years.William E. Farr has written the first biographical portrait of Seyler, focusing on his two summers at Glacier in 1913 and 1914, his special relationship with the Blackfeet, and the magnificent art he created in the Northern Rockies. The book features more than one hundred images - many in color - including Seyler's major works from Glacier, other paintings from his European years, and historic photographs from the park.Seyler enjoyed wide recognition in Europe in his day, but the wartime destruction of his European works has since relegated him to obscurity. This lavish volume shows the stunning visual impact of his art and secures his place as one of the paramount portrayers of a place we still call the Crown of the Continent.

The Nazis put a remarkable amount of effort into anti-Semitic propaganda, intending to bring ordinary Germans around to the destructive ideology of the Nazi party. Julius Streicher (1885-1946) spearheaded many of these efforts, publishing anti-Semitic articles and cartoons in his weekly newspaper, Der Stürmer, the most widely read paper in the Third Reich. Streicher won the close personal friendship of Hitler and Himmler, and drew deserved attacks from the world press. Bytwerk's biography examines Streicher's use of propaganda techniques, and the hate literature towards Jews that continued to appear after his death, bearing his influence.
Julius Nyerere

With vision, hard-nosed judgment, and biting humor, Julius Nyerere confronted the challenges of nation building in modern Africa. Constructing Tanzania out of a controversial Cold War union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar, Nyerere emerged as one of independent Africa's most influential leaders. He pursued his own brand of African socialism, called Ujamaa, with unquestioned integrity, and saw it profoundly influence movements to end white minority rule in Southern Africa. Yet his efforts to build a peaceful nation created a police state, economic crisis, and a war with Idi Amin's Uganda. Eventually—unlike most of his contemporaries—Nyerere retired voluntarily from power, paving the way for peaceful electoral transitions in Tanzania that continue today. Based on multinational archival research, extensive reading, and interviews with Nyerere's family and colleagues, as well as some who suffered under his rule, Paul Bjerk provides an incisive and accessible biography of this African leader of global importance. Recognizing Nyerere's commitment to participatory government and social equality while also confronting his authoritarian turns and policy failures, Bjerk offers a portrait of principled leadership under the difficult circumstances of postcolonial Africa.

With a life and career spanning nearly a century, Julius Shulman is credited with furthering the midcentury modernist movement through his flawless photographs of the pioneering architecture of Richard Neutra and Charles Eames, among others. While Shulman's pictures comprise the most published images of the modernist movement, this monograph presents many neverbefore- seen images on a subject closest to Shulman's heart: Los Angeles and its environs-including Palm Springs and other suburbs. Shulman documents then-emerging areas like Century City, Wilshire Boulevard, and Echo Park, as well as landmarks like the Watts Towers and Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Many of these Los Angeles buildings and neighborhoods have since been overhauled, torn down, or otherwise altered beyond recognition, making these images some of the only lasting testaments to their existence. Selected from his personal collection as well as his official archives, the photographs represent not only lesser-known and never-before-seen material, but also some of Shulman's own personal favorites.
Julius Caesar: The Civil War Books I & II
Julius Caesar's own narrative of the opening year of the Civil War between himself and Pompey is the only surviving account from the classical world of such a conflict written by one of the principals. The apparent clarity of the narrative, and the limpidity and economy of Caesar's style, in fact conceal a tendentious presentation of both his own and his opponent’s motives, actions and competence. The influence of dramatic structures on the selection and combination of events related by Caesar is also important. The commentary therefore aims to elucidate not only matters directly referred to in the text, but the whole context of their presentation. Latin text with facing-page translation, introduction and commentary. First published in 1991, the paperback was reprinted with minor corrections in 2003.
