Planet D.A.L.E. (Direct Alien Life Entities)
Planet D.A.L.E is the most controversial book of this decade. It's a story that takes everything you know about religion, science, and evolution and stands it on its ear. The story starts with the archaeological find under the sphinx were a treasure trove of facts about the earth and its existence. The inhabitants of Mars are using Earth as a food source until it is no longer needed. Mars finally invent intergalactic travel and meet the Gods of Earth. The Gods of Earth work with Mars in finding the inhabitants a new planet to live on. The Gods and the Martians work together in developing new humanoids to inhabit the Earth.

In this book, I've tried to condense a number of thoughts and insights that I've been struggling with as a minister in a society that is both Post-Modern and 'Post-Christian'. Serving an historic denomination has turned out to be a great vehicle for innovation as it allowed me to offer the church a broader way of doing theology that I believe makes sense in our contemporary life. After all, our Calvinistic roots provide a clarion call for theological innovation. The cry, Reformed and always being reformed has been the motto for Reformed Christians for over five centuries. I've used the late Ben Lacy Rose's very good contemporary view of T.U.L.I.P as a baseline for the series. His insights are priceless. Brian McLaren's brief mention of a kinder, gentler Calvinism in his book A Generous Orthodoxy serves as the outline for much of the content of the five newer ways to view T.U.L.I.P. He makes it easy to build on his brief musings. In fact, McLaren offers a challenge to denominations to take up his suggestions to update their theology for the 21st Century. I guess this is what I'm trying to do in this book.My hope is that these brief chapters will catch your attention and pique your curiosity. By revisiting the old acrostic T.U.L.I.P. in our day, you and the church will appreciate not only our historic viewpoints but also be challenged to consider our faith and beliefs in new ways for a new day. Theology really does matter for believers. I hope this brief work can help the larger church find this to be so. Rev. Dr. Keith Curran, 2021
NepĀl MaṇḌal: A Pilgrim's Guide to the Kathmandu Valley
Nepal Mandal is an in-depth guide and survey of the principle Buddhist and Hindu monasteries, temples and pīṭhs of the Kathmandu Valley. In seven parts under the rubric of Buddha, Padmasambhava, Gorakhnāth, Śiva, Nārāyaṇ, Mātṛkās and Peaks and Rivers, over one hundred and twenty powerplace are described, many fully described under the heads Myth, Legend, In The Past, and On The Ground. Myth and Legend lay the background; In The Past provides the history; and On The Ground guides the pilgrim-visitor around the site indicating its main features. Many readers will find the sections on Myth and Legend to be the highlight of the book. Retold with a jogi's insight these sections constitute a radical spiritual dimension to the powerplaces. The last and largest section includes description of the sacred Buddhist and Hindu art and architecture - sometimes in great detail - for the visitor focused on the religious art forms - the objects of veneration. In that way this large book is a guide to the principle cities of the Valley-Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur - at the same time visiting the treasures in the villages between these cities. A practical iconography of the pantheon of the Kathmandu Valley is thereby built-in, with sections of the text dedicated to it. Over a hundred high quality black and white photographs document the stone and metal sculpture of Nepal Mandal. Since most of the work on this book was done in years before the 2015 earthquake it constitutes an historical record of the art 'gone missing' and the architectural damage done. The author, a prominent exponent of Tantric Buddhism in both theory and practice, spent four decades of unending pilgrimage through the monasteries and temples of the Kathmandu Valley propitiating their numinous inhabitants and documenting their invaluable contents. An extensive Supplement provides rare pilgrim itineraries for the Kathmandu Valley, a full Glossary defines technical terms, and a detailed Table of Contents and an inclusive Index provide easy access.

The Broken Compass

It seems like common sense that children do better when parents are actively involved in their schooling. But how well does the evidence stack up? The Broken Compass puts this question to the test in the most thorough scientific investigation to date of how parents across socioeconomic and ethnic groups contribute to the academic performance of K-12 children. The study's surprising discovery is that no clear connection exists between parental involvement and improved student performance.Keith Robinson and Angel Harris assessed over sixty measures of parental participation, at home and in school. Some of the associations they found between socioeconomic status and educational involvement were consistent with past studies. Yet other results ran contrary to previous research and popular perceptions. It is not the case that Hispanic and African American parents are less concerned with education than other ethnic groups--or that "tiger parenting" among Asian Americans gets the desired results. In fact, many low-income parents across a wide spectrum want to be involved in their children's school lives, but they often receive little support from the school system. And for immigrant families, language barriers only worsen the problem. While Robinson and Harris do not wish to discourage parents' interest, they believe that the time has come to seriously reconsider whether greater parental involvement can make much of a dent in the basic problems facing their children's education today. This provocative study challenges some of our most cherished beliefs about the role of family in educational success.

This book makes public, for the first time, a full account of the development of the privatization of prisons, centred on the only full-scale empirical study yet to have been undertaken in Britain. After providing an up-to-date overview of the development of private sector involvement in penal practice in the United Kingdom, North America, Europe and Australia, the authors go on to describe the first two years in the life of Wolds Remand Prison - the first private prison in Britain. They look at the daily life for remand prisoners, assess the duties and morale of staff and compare the workings of Wolds to a new local prison in the public sector. The authors conclude by discussing some of the practical and theoretical issues to have emerged from contracting out, ethical issues surrounding the whole privatization debate and implications for the future of the prison system and penal policy.

THE FIRST OF THREE SLIM VOLUMES Roger L'Estrange, staunch royalist, author and pamphleteer, one-time inmate of Newgate Prison, one-time exile, one-time Member of Parliament, takes up the teaching of the Roman Stoic philosopher Seneca, rearranging and paraphrasing the original Latin to shape a unique and engaging work of his own. Stoic philosophy guides us through all hazards, and arms us against all difficulties. Those who develop a good character in accordance with Stoic principles learn to live well and face adversities and setbacks with an unshakable equanimity. This slim volume is the first of three parts of Roger L'Estrange's Seneca of a Happy Life, being itself an extract from a much larger whole, Seneca's Morals, first published in 1678.
