This unique work represents the recording and analysis of oral history interviews conducted by the pioneering general practitioner Dr Hetty Ockrim with over seventy patients, as well as office staff and members of the nursing team, between 1989 and 1992 in her former practice in the Ibrox/Govan areas of Glasgow, places of significant socio-economic deprivation. Her focus in undertaking this study was on personal and social, rather than just clinical, issues. The interviews are accompanied by background and commentary for the study, reflecting the full breadth of general practice. Many of the interviewees had memories stretching back before the NHS, providing a unique historical perspective of service development, as well as invaluable directions for improving current and future general practice. Contested Places, Contested Pasts focuses on how the First and Second World Wars, Holocaust, Cold War communist period, and 1956 Uprising have been memorialized and marked in the Hungarian landscape. The book explores the difficult debates surrounding the remembrance and commemoration of these events. This is the first comprehensive, book-length study of Hungary’s commemorative landscapes from the First World War to the present. By stressing the spatiality and materiality of memory practice, it offers new insights into why some events are celebrated widely, while other controversial events are marked modestly or not at all. Using a comparative case study methodology, the book crisscrosses the country using archival sources and extensive fieldwork to document the stories behind dozens of major and minor memorials. Examples from Budapest are important, but key contributions of this book are the examples drawn from cities, towns, and villages outside the capital. A wealth of photographs, maps, and diagrams are included to illustrate important ideas, especially the range of responses that have emerged to commemorate major historical events. In the end, the book highlights the value of studies like this one that explore the varied ways in which the World Wars, Holocaust, and Cold War have been represented in the commemorative landscapes of Europe and beyond. This book is for readers interested in Hungarian and European history, public art and architecture, landscape studies, and commemorative practices. Weaving theory and examples in an engaging storyline, the book will appeal to broader audiences interested in the challenges of confronting Europe’s legacies of twentieth-century war, violence, and political upheaval.
Illustrating Economics

Illustrating Economics

Kenneth E. Boulding

This volume is a sampling of quips, verses, drawings, and even the music of one of the most original and versatile minds of the twentieth century, Kenneth Boulding prominent economist, lecturer, and author. The driving force behind Kenneth Boulding's wideranging book is that he truly en joys all that he does. Indeed, his greatest accomplishment may very well be that he was a profoundly happy man. This is reflected in works that are laced with beauty, wit, and extraordinary imagery-works that are often composed and appeared in the most unexpected of places. In the midst of one of the classic textbooks of his generally staid profession, Economic Analysis, Boulding introduced the "bathtub theorem." Illustrating Economics: Beasts, Ballads and Aphorisms is a collection of similar instances and, as such, it is fun.The reader should be advised that the book contains traps. Boulding coats his ideas with sugar to please his audience as well as promote consumption. He describes peace as "a drab girl with an olive branch corsage whom no red-blooded American (or Russian) could conceivably warm up to." The reader smiles at the recognition of the truth inherent within the image and ponders the irony of why so fine a state as peace should be regarded as dull, and so ugly a condition as war should be regarded as romantic. This book is for enjoyment, but it should carry the following warning: Caution-Reading this may be stimulating to your intellect.
