New World Courtships

New World Courtships

Melissa M. Adams-Campbell

Dartmouth College Press

Feminist literary critics have long recognized that the novel's marriage plot can shape the lives of women readers; however, they have largely traced the effects of this influence through a monolithic understanding of marriage. New World Courtships is the first scholarly study to recover a geographically diverse array of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century novels that actively compare marriage practices from the Atlantic world. These texts trouble Enlightenment claims that companionate marriage leads to women's progress by comparing alternative systems for arranging marriage and sexual relations in the Americas. Attending to representations of marital diversity in early transatlantic novels disrupts nation-based accounts of the rise of the novel and its relation to "the" marriage plot. It also illuminates how and why cultural differences in marriage mattered in the Atlantic world - and shows how these differences might help us to reimagine marital diversity today. This book will appeal to scholars of literature, women's studies, and early American history.

Using the Next Generation Science Standards With Gifted and Advanced Learners provides teachers and administrators examples and strategies to implement the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) with gifted and advanced learners at all stages of development in K-12 schools. The book describes—and demonstrates with specific examples from the NGSS—what effective differentiated activities in science look like for high-ability learners. It shares how educators can provide rigor within the new standards to allow students to demonstrate higher level thinking, reasoning, problem solving, passion, and inventiveness in science. By doing so, students will develop the skills, habits of mind, and attitudes toward learning needed to reach high levels of competency and creative production in science fields.
Teacher's Guide to Using the Next Generation Science Standards With Gifted and Advanced Learners
A Teacher's Guide to Using the Next Generation Science Standards With Gifted and Advanced Learners provides teachers and administrators with practical examples of ways to build comprehensive, coherent, and rigorous science learning experiences for gifted and advanced students from kindergarten to high school. It provides an array of examples across the four domains of science: physical sciences; Earth and space sciences; life sciences; and engineering, technology, and applications of science. Each learning experience indicates the performance expectation addressed and includes a sequence of activities, implementation examples, connections to the CCSS-Math and CCSS-ELA, and formative assessments. Chapters on specific instructional and management strategies, assessment, and professional development suggestions for implementing the standards within the classroom will be helpful for both teachers and administrators.

Stuff happens, life gets messy and once in a while, you get thrown a curveball that unexpectedly hits you square in the face. Getting knocked down from time to time, it's not always easy to get back up again. You might even lose perspective and forget that there are more extraordinary experiences coming your way. In fact, gratitude is no easy task especially when you're tired, frustrated, overwhelmed, and struggling. That's where Gratitude Shmatitude, comes into play. It is a practical guide - your map and compass - that can lead you to a grateful more centered life filled with compassion and enthusiasm. This practical guide demands that you don't merely think about gratitude but do it too. Chapters are divided into two parts; think and do. The 'think it' part includes stories and sometimes facts for contemplation and the 'do it' part at the end of each chapter includes actionable steps to take and explore gratitude. In Gratitude Shmatitude, we learn that being grateful for something or to someone should never be overwhelming or obligatory. Rather, it is an experiential practice of happiness and connection to nature, people, and ourselves. Whether you work through this book in days, weeks, or months, it will guide you on your journey toward habitualizing gratitude and making it a conscious daily practice. Gratitude as a practice can help you put things in perspective. It is an effective tool we can use to bring ourselves into the present moment. It asks us to consciously focus our attention on what is happening now with openness and acceptance. A routine practice can strengthen feelings in you of compassion, warmth, and tenderness. Gratitude is powerful. It transforms lives. It can restore your faith in humanity. It can remind you that dreams can destroy your mediocrity, that life is beautiful and the fact that we indeed exist on this planet shooting through space is nothing short of a miracle. By the end of this book, you just might step into a life filled with gratitude. It's all up to you.

The thought-provoking articles in Conservation can assist in catalyzing the transition to a new green economy by shaping the mind-sets of leaders, students, teachers and the public alike.' Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Director, UN Environment Programme (UNEP) 'An extremely useful compilation of articles on the complex issues underlying nature conservation.' Ashish Kothari, Co-chair, IUCN Intercommission Strategic Direction on Governance, Equity, and Livelihoods in Relation to Protected Areas (TILCEPA) 'In this intelligently chosen, broadly ranging set of readings on conservation, Professor Adams assembles a set of vital readings for professionals, teachers, students, and the interested public.' Kent Redford, Director, Wildlife Conservation Society Institute This 4-volume set, edited by a leading expert on nature conservation, brings together in one collection a series of papers fundamental to understanding the social, political, cultural and scientific dimensions of conservation. Each volume is introduced by a new review essay, which both sets the scope for the collection and advances analytical understanding of conservation issues. Volume I covers the historical development of conservation ideas and reviews the diverse contemporary philosophical, ethical, cultural and practical arguments for conservation. Volume II addresses the core issue of conservation: the maintenance of living diversity in the face of human demands on the biosphere. The intention here is not to offer a sourcebook of conservation science, but to include the key texts that have changed the way conservation is understood and practised. Volume III explores the overlaps and conflicts between conservation and development, andwin-win solutions to conflicts between the two, including ideas of sustainable development. Volume IV presents work on conservation as an essentially political process, drawing chiefly on social science and, in particular, political ecology and environmental history.

The countryside is changing faster than ever. Fifty years of conservation achievements in the UK are now being confronted by a new complexion of economic forces that are driving change in the countryside. At the same time new ideas in conservation are altering the role that conservation is being asked to play in negotiating the transition from past to future. This revised edition of Bill Adams classic work Future Nature tackles the new challenges in the countryside and wildlife conservation head-on through a new Introduction and Postscript with updated arguments about naturalness and our social engagement with nature, and complemented by a new Foreword by Adrian Phillips. Concepts such as biodiversity and sustainability, and changes in our understanding, appreciation and concern for nature, offer unprecedented opportunities. Bill Adams explores the scientific, cultural and economic significance of conservation. He argues that conservation must move beyond the boundaries of parks and reserves to embrace the whole countryside. The importance of conservation for the future is enormous. It holds the potential to create new spaces for nature, both in the landscape and in our lives and imaginations. This factual, beautifully written and thought-provoking book offers a fundamental reassessment of conservation, its importance, and how to achieve it. Published with BANC

Dennis M. Adams, a retired Detective with the Buffalo NY Police Department, has had his first crime novel published in 2021. It is called Motive. Although novel indicates a work of fiction, or fabrication, this is only partly true. He explains that many of the incidents and events that appear in the book are based on real life occurrences. In fact, the entire ensemble cast of the Coterie is a conglomeration of character traits and personalities of command officers and detectives he has worked with. The Coterie is a social group of mostly retired cops, supervisors and detectives, who meet on a weekly basis for camaraderie and to reminisce about 'back in the day' when they were at the top of their game. Then the group is called to action when one of their own, retired Chief of Homicide Joe Morgan, alerts them that his grandson had been murdered and announces that the Police Department's investigation has come to a standstill, as the murderer is believed to be deceased. Morgan knows the case should not be closed until the motive for the murder is determined. Lives depend on it. The Coterie takes up the investigation and is determined to find the motive utilizing some new technology, 'old school shoe-leather' investigating, and ingenuity. The members of the Coterie proceed to usher readers through solving several homicides, closing a cold-case murder, and uncovering corruption in the PD. In the end, they do find the motive for the killing of Joe Morgan's grandson. And yes, it is deadly.Motive is a fast-moving police procedural mystery that is filled with memorable characters who we all can identify with. The many twists and turns will keep you turning pages; wanting to find out how it ends, but all the time not wanting it to end.

The UK construction industry is the sixth largest industry in the UK in terms of turnover. During the last decade, it has undergone an unprecedented period of self-examination, including input from most of the leaders of the major suppliers and clients as well as from leading politicians, civil servants and political advisers. From 1993 to 2003, government and industry collaborated closely to achieve political and structural change in the industry and to bring about nothing less than a re-organization of the way it undertakes its business. This key text is an objective presentation of the critical issues inherent in the construction industry during this time.Providing invaluable source material for students of government/industry relations, industry practitioners and clients, and for economic and social commentators, this valuable resource draws on revealing personal accounts from politicians, civil servants, advisers and industry leaders, as well as factual reportage, archives and official papers of the period. Informative and enlightening, this book objectively details and documents exactly what happened at this time, and the reasons for it, and offers an unbiased interpretation of the successes or failures of the various initiatives that emerged, including the Movement for Innovation, Rethinking Construction and Constructing Excellence.
