This unique volume presents an original approach to physical acoustics with additional emphasis on the most useful surface acoustic waves on solids. The study is based on foundational work of Léon Brillouin, and application of the celebrated invariance theorem of Emmy Noether to an element of volume that is representative of the wave motion.This approach provides an easy interpretation of typical wave motions of physical acoustics in bulk, at surfaces, and across interfaces, in the form of the motion of associated quasi-particles. This type of motion, Newtonian or not, depends on the wave motion considered, and on the original modeling of the continuum that supports it. After a thoughtful review of Brillouin's fundamental ideas related to radiative stresses, wave momentum and action, and the necessary reminder on modern nonlinear continuum thermomechanics, invariance theory and techniques of asymptotics, a variety of situations and models illustrates the power and richness of the approach and its strong potential in applications. Elasticity, piezoelectricity and new models of continua with nonlinearity, viscosity and some generalized features (microstructure, weak or strong nonlocality) or unusual situations (bounding surface with energy, elastic thin film glued on a surface waveguide), are considered, exhibiting thus the versatility of the approach.This original book offers an innovative vision and treatment of the problems of wave propagation in deformable solids. It opens up new horizons in the theoretical and applied facets of physical acoustics.

Diese Forschung wurde durch die Frage nach der Bedeutung von Behinderung in Familien mit Kindern mit Spina bifida motiviert. Ziel war es, die Kategorien von Behinderung zu entschl sseln, die Familien mit behinderten Kindern Struktur geben, und wie sie sich gegenseitig unterst tzen, um diese Dynamik zu bew ltigen, die alle Familienmitglieder auf die eine oder andere Weise betrifft. Diese Forschung wurde in einem qualitativen methodischen Design mit einem umfassenden Ansatz durchgef hrt, wobei die Erkenntnisse aus den Erfahrungen der Familien unter der Methode der hermeneutischen Analyse, in der die Situationen der Familienmitglieder interpretiert werden, einbezogen wurden. Die Geschlechterrollen sind in den Familien akzentuiert, die M tter sind nach wie vor die Hauptbetreuerinnen, da dies mehr Verst ndnis und Anpassung an die Alltagsbedingungen erfordert. This research was motivated by the question of the meaning of disability in families with children with spina bifida. The purpose was to unravel the categories of disability that give structure to families with children with disabilities, how they sustain and support each other to face this dynamic that involves all members of the family in one way or another. This research was framed in a qualitative methodological design with a comprehensive approach, incorporating findings from the experiences of the families, under the method of hermeneutic analysis, in which the situations of the family members are interpreted. Gender roles are accentuated in the families, mothers continue to be the main caregivers, as this requires greater understanding and adaptation to everyday conditions. Fathers are responsible for the family's support and external relations.

Cette recherche a t motiv e par la question de la signification du handicap dans les familles ayant des enfants atteints de spina-bifida. L'objectif tait d' lucider les cat gories de handicap qui structurent les familles d'enfants handicap s, la mani re dont elles se soutiennent mutuellement pour faire face cette dynamique qui implique tous les membres de la famille d'une mani re ou d'une autre. Cette recherche s'est inscrite dans une conception m thodologique qualitative avec une approche globale, incorporant les r sultats des exp riences des familles, selon la m thode de l'analyse herm neutique, dans laquelle les situations des membres de la famille sont interpr t es. Les r les des hommes et des femmes sont accentu s dans les familles, les m res continuant s'occuper principalement des enfants, ce qui exige une plus grande compr hension et une meilleure adaptation aux conditions de la vie quotidienne. Lo scopo era quello di svelare le categorie di disabilit che danno struttura alle famiglie con bambini con disabilit , come si sostengono e si supportano a vicenda per affrontare questa dinamica che coinvolge tutti i membri della famiglia in un modo o nell'altro. Questa ricerca stata inquadrata in un disegno metodologico qualitativo con un approccio globale, incorporando i risultati delle esperienze delle famiglie, secondo il metodo dell'analisi ermeneutica, in cui vengono interpretate le situazioni dei membri della famiglia. This book brings together 10 experiments which introduce historical perspectives into mathematics classrooms for 11 to 18-year-olds. The authors suggest that students should not only read ancient texts, but also should construct, draw and manipulate. The different chapters refer to ancient Greek, Indian, Chinese and Arabic mathematics as well as to contemporary mathematics. Students are introduced to well-known mathematicians—such as Gottfried Leibniz and Leonard Euler—as well as to less famous practitioners and engineers. Always, there is the attempt to associate the experiments with their scientific and cultural contexts. One of the main values of history is to show that the notions and concepts we teach were invented to solve problems. The different chapters of this collection all have, as their starting points, historic problems—mathematical or not. These are problems of exchanging and sharing, of dividing figures and volumes as well as engineers’ problems, calculations, equations and congruence. The mathematical reasoning which accompanies these actions is illustrated by the use of drawings, folding, graphical constructions and the production of machines.
