Bridget couldn't think of anything more boring or scary than going to a nursing home to visit her great-granddad, but her attitude changed when the Silver Star the old man carries around his neck on a red, white, and blue ribbon turns up missing. He is devastated and so is Bridget. "It's right in front of your nose, dummy," says the parrot on the gray lady's shoulder. Bridget rises to the investigative challenge and conducts a heart-stopping search to find the culprit. I believe I bring a certain authenticity to both the dialogue and the narrative because of an internship in two nursing homes in the course of obtaining a master's degree in counseling and my frequent visits to the assisted care where my dad resided. This, coupled with my background as an educator, allows me to bridge the generational gap. I think that this is an important read for families who have a relative in a nursing home. This book is a blend of humor and seriousness. Best of all, the seniors play a pivotal role in catching the thief, developing a new-found respect for the seniors we often forget are buried in institutions. The Case of the Missing Silver Star is well suited for young readers and seniors in assisted care. The pace kept both groups intrigued, and the humor and gumption of the seniors depicted in this book offsets any chance of feeling sorry for them for being tucked away in nursing homes. "This is a wake-up call," says a retired policeman.
The Atlas of Color is your road map to all of color space and it fits in your back pocket. Affordable, portable, and reliable, this swatchbook with accompanying booklet is an essential reference for any designer or artist. More than 1,750 colors are sorted by the three traits that Albert Munsell identified as making up 3D color space: hue, value, and chroma. Talking about color has always been notoriously abstract: what exactly is viridian, for instance? The Atlas of Color enables users to say exactly what they mean: "a blue green of medium value and medium chroma," or even refer to a specific swatch by its corresponding Munsell color system reference. Each color on the swatchbook has full bleed-off so that you can compare your work directly against the swatch. LAB and RGB tags are also present, enabling users to take a color from the swatchbook into their digital design. The accompanying booklet explains the origins and basis of the Munsell color system and how to use the swatchbook. Readers will learn about and test their understanding of hue, value, and chroma. Chapters specific to design disciplines explain how to apply this knowledge in your own field.
Ralph was a self-made man who took the good examples set by his parents and grandparents, started with very little, cut his losses when necessary, endured the Great Depression without folding and turned a half section of Iowa farm land into a prosperous operation. In so doing he passed on his work ethic and sound judgement to his family and provided a good life for himself and his family. Serving his country when asked to do so may have saved him from getting mired in the Montana homesteading disaster. But maybe his keen observation after experiencing both Montana life and Iowa life helped him make the right decision. That is for you to ponder and decide after reading the book. This is his story.

This eloquent and spirited memoir of a young Jewish girl's coming of age in Nazi-occupied France recounts her own family's difficult and brave survival and portrays as well the love and quiet heroism of her rescuers. A powerful central figure is Madame Marie Chotel, the Catholic concierge and seamstress who hides seven-year-old Odette and her mother in her broom closet while police search, who secures the child's safe haven in a distant province, and who is cherished by Odette, even in absentia, as her godmother and mentor. The story unfolds as a drama of many parts, told in a lyrical prose rich with flashes of humor and a startling perceptivity that takes nothing for granted. Odette is hidden during the occupation, a secret Jew in a remote and conservative Catholic village. Absorbed in the village's life, she becomes a fervent Catholic child. When she returns to Paris, she struggles over her Jewish identity and religion and her fierce nostalgia for the wild countryside, but she accepts again the secular Judaism of her working-class intellectual parents, immigrants from Poland who survived the war (though many relatives did not), her father as a French Army prisoner of war, her mother as a member of the Resistance. And she again finds Madame Marie, who tells her, simply, to look in her heart. "The world can be confusing, maddening, and a whole city, a whole country can vanish from one's life but as long as Madame Marie sits at her sewing machine, everything can be made right again."The story does not close with the war's end and the departure of fourteen-year-old Odette and her parents for America. It continues with her search, many years later, for Madame Marie, and with the inscription of the name of Marie Chotel on the Wall of Righteous Gentiles at the Holocaust Memorial in Washington, D.C. This memoir is extraordinary not only for its broad historic sensibility but for its fascinating portrait of wartime France from the unusual perspective of a Jew whose life was permitted to go on.
