Every plan, pro-forma, design, building contract, and construction schedule is a proposal about future places. To help improve such proposals, Foresight and Design: Composing Future Places presents conceptual tools to inform design and outline the need for designers to rigorously think about potential futures. Our built compositions are constantly transforming due to continuing urbanization, demographic shifts, climate change, the evolution of virtual worlds, economic and health disparities, and other unforeseen trends. If we envision and plan for alternative futures, we are better able to purposefully respond. This book presents emerging practices of foresight, including signals of change, thick descriptions, pace layers, (re)framing, prototyping, scenarios, maps of change, storytelling, and world-building, to indicate how robust contemplation of multiple potential futures can help us compose places that are durable, resilient, and adaptable. Five brief case studies interspersed between the chapters serve as examples of practitioners exercising foresight through these practices. Contributions include a description of a regional design process in Afghanistan by Anthony Fettes of Sasaki Architects, and an exploration into the Indigenous Futurism model-making competition by Anjelica Gallegos. Written for architects, designers, planners, developers, city councilmembers, and engineers, this book encourages all composers of the built environment to envision alternative futures and purposefully respond.

The United States spends more than 17% of its GDP on healthcare, while other developed countries average 8.7% of GDP on healthcare expenditures. All this spending doesn’t equate to value, quality, or performance, however. Among 11 high-income countries, the United States healthcare industry ranked last during the past seven years in four key performance categories: administrative efficiency, access to care, equity, and healthcare outcomes. This book presents the implantable medical device (IMD) supply chain ecosystem as a microcosm of how these challenges of affordability and healthcare outcomes are created and are allowed to fester. The IMD Spiderweb, as the authors call it, is exposed as an example of how a wide range of participants—including physicians, health system CEOs, group purchasing organizations, health insurance companies, and supply chain executives—become ensnared in a web designed to benefit only one player.Health systems in the United States pay as much as six times more for some IMDs than their counterparts do in Europe, and prices for the same IMD model vary even among different U.S. hospitals. While there is a fascination with the latest and greatest device, there is also a shroud around visibility into how these products have performed and are likely to perform in patients. The costs continue to rise not only in healthcare expenditures, but also in death and disability. The IMD Spiderweb is presented as a prime lesson in the challenges in healthcare affordability and outcomes that occur throughout the entire healthcare industry. It is also put forward as an opportunity. The story behind how these challenges arose and continue to be deepened by the current healthcare ecosystem also provides a foundation for solutions.

Two years after the defeat of A.I.Z.E.N. and their leader King Azraghul, Siobhan and her friends have gone their separate ways after moving into the United States of America in groups, on their own and with friends they've met back in Paris and Cairo and are currently living among the humans and aiding government forces against the toughest regular physical threats and sometimes with them and on their own against supernatural threats hidden across the globe. But when Siobhan's older sister Abigail gets taken hostage by the sinister threat behind the disturbing events in the 1930s known as the Morrigan, Siobhan rallies five of her friends in the Hooded Crow Clan to her aid and goes to Rajasthan to receive some sacred training from the Hindu God of Motion known as Savitr to maintain as much potential speed motion chakra as possible in efforts of defeating the evil phantom queen and rescuing her sister at all costs.

Canals are wonderful places to take a camera. There is over 200 years of transport history to document, with many attractive bridges, locks and other features. There are many colourful boats and a range of plants and flowers. Water, ice and snow add to the picture possibilities, with changing seasons, weather and time of day producing yet more variation. All manner of things can be seen from tow paths; industry, farming, skies, trees, a wide range of patterns and textures, fungi and so much more. This book celebrates the richness of the pictorial opportunities on offer, with 17 themed chapters and over 360 fabulous photographs. Some were clearly taken along a canal, but with over half, the context is unclear. Many of these could be described as off-beat, innovative or surprising. The artistic potential of canals is presented for all to enjoy. A selection of camera settings is given so that it is easier to understand how particular visual effects were achieved.Being a creative photographer is a little like being an observational comedian. You must learn to look at the world from strange angles, so that the ordinary and the mundane are presented in fresh and unusual ways, challenging and delighting the observer. This book sets out to do just that.140 pages, 8.5 x 11 inches. This is the third book in the UK Canals series, following on from 1: The Kennet and Avon Canal in pictures, which gives a general overview of this very popular waterway, 2: Wildlife of the Kennet and Avon Canal, 4: Pandemic diary: Newbury in a time of crisis and 5: Pandemic diary 2: Newbury emerges from lockdown. This hotel is old and historic. On the outside it just looks like an ordinary building, and, in fact, it is. However, the doorman, who's worked there for many years, has a few stories to tell. Stories that are far from normal. And this is one of them. The doorman's character shines through as you hear him speak. He is quirky, accidentally humorous, and sometimes deviates from his story. In the end, he gets to where he's going, and takes the reader along with him on this peculiar adventure.

This second edition brings this definitive book up to date with the many advances in our understanding of Arctic climate since the first edition was published in 2005. The book has also been extensively reorganized to weave issues of Arctic change throughout the text, rather than confining them to a single chapter. It is the first to provide an integrated assessment of the Arctic climate system, recognizing that a true understanding of how the Arctic functions lies in appreciating the interactions among its various components. The book begins with a historical perspective, followed by discussion of the basic physical and climatic characteristics of the Arctic. Following a review of past climates (paleoclimates), the book closes with an assessment of the Arctic's uncertain future. Though targeted mainly at advanced students and researchers, this book is accessible to anyone with an interest in the Arctic and a basic understanding of climate science.

Although the position of Saudi women within society draws media attention throughout the world, young Saudi men remain part of a silent mass, their thoughts and views rarely heard outside of the Kingdom. Based on primary research across Saudi Arabia with young men from a diverse range of backgrounds, Mark C. Thompson allows for this distinct group of voices to be heard, revealing their opinions and attitudes towards the societal and economic transformations affecting their lives within a gender-segregated society and examining the challenges and dilemmas facing young Saudi men in the twenty-first century. From ideas and beliefs about, identity, education, employment, marriage prospects and gender segregation, as well as political participation and exclusion, this study in turn invites us to reconsider the future of Saudi Arabia as a globalized Kingdom.

A pronoia was a type of conditional grant from the emperor, often to soldiers, of various properties and privileges. In large measure the institution of pronoia characterized social and economic relations in later Byzantium, and its study is the study of later Byzantium. Filling the need for a comprehensive study of the institution, this book examines the origin, evolution and characteristics of pronoia, focusing particularly on the later thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. But the book is much more than a study of a single institution. With a broad chronological scope extending from the mid-tenth to the mid-fifteenth century, it incorporates the latest understanding of Byzantine agrarian relations, taxation, administration and the economy, as it deals with relations between the emperor, monastic and lay landholders, including soldiers and peasants. Particular attention is paid to the relation between the pronoia and Western European, Slavic and Middle Eastern institutions, especially the Ottoman timar.

Object-Orientation, Abstraction, and Data Structures Using Scala
Praise for the first edition: "The well-written, comprehensive book [is] aiming to become a de facto reference for the language and its features and capabilities. The pace is appropriate for beginners; programming concepts are introduced progressively through a range of examples and then used as tools for building applications in various domains, including sophisticated data structures and algorithms Highly recommended. Students of all levels, faculty, and professionals/practitioners.D. Papamichail, University of Miami in CHOICE Magazine Mark Lewis Introduction to the Art of Programming Using Scala was the first textbook to use Scala for introductory CS courses. Fully revised and expanded, the new edition of this popular text has been divided into two books. Object-Orientation, Abstraction, and Data Structures Using Scala, Second Edition is intended to be used as a textbook for a second or third semester course in Computer Science. The Scala programming language provides powerful constructs for expressing both object orientation and abstraction. This book provides students with these tools of object orientation to help them structure solutions to larger, more complex problems, and to expand on their knowledge of abstraction so that they can make their code more powerful and flexible. The book also illustrates key concepts through the creation of data structures, showing how data structures can be written, and the strengths and weaknesses of each one. Libraries that provide the functionality needed to do real programming are also explored in the text, including GUIs, multithreading, and networking. The book is filled with end-of-chapter projects and exercises, and the authors have also posted a number of different supplements on the book website. Video lectures for each chapter in the book are also available on YouTube. The videos show constr
Introduction to the Art of Programming Using Scala
With its flexibility for programming both small and large projects, Scala is an ideal language for teaching beginning programming. Yet there are no textbooks on Scala currently available for the CS1/CS2 levels. Introduction to the Art of Programming Using Scala presents many concepts from CS1 and CS2 using a modern, JVM-based language that works well for both programming in the small and programming in the large. The book progresses from true programming in the small to more significant projects later, leveraging the full benefits of object orientation. It first focuses on fundamental problem solving and programming in the small using the REPL and scripting environments. It covers basic logic and problem decomposition and explains how to use GUIs and graphics in programs. The text then illustrates the benefits of object-oriented design and presents a large collection of basic data structures showing different implementations of key ADTs along with more atypical data structures. It also introduces multithreading and networking to provide further motivating examples. By using Scala as the language for both CS1 and CS2 topics, this textbook gives students an easy entry into programming small projects as well as a firm foundation for taking on larger-scale projects. Many student and instructor resources are available at www.programmingusingscala.net
