Landon Metz’s abstract paintings reflect the artist’s deliberate and meditative attention that endures throughout each phase of the artist’s process. From stretching canvas to selecting his specific palette to the actual application of paint and subsequent creation of form, the end result of such intense concentration is an energy that seemingly reverberates from Metz’s work. Curving forms of mesmerizing color on individual canvasses are often exhibited as diptychs and triptychs, or serially installed next to one another in installations to form a larger dialogue, creating pattern and rhythm. Metz’s artworks communicate a contemporary voice engaging directly with the larger dialogue of abstraction’s expansive history. The forms and repetition found in nature are often sources of inspiration for Metz, the artist being from Arizona where rock formations shaped over thousands of years are direct examples of the relationship between time, material, and form. This book brings together numerous examples of this young tour de force’s elegant oeuvre, while exemplifying the ways in which such a spirit of studied precision and deliberation holds enduring value in a world that seems to move faster with each passing day.

A pioneering figure in film studies, Christian Metz proposed countless new concepts for reflecting on cinema, rooted in his phenomenological structuralism. He also played a key role in establishing film studies as a scholarly discipline, making major contributions to its institutionalisation in universities worldwide. This book brings together a stellar roster of contributors to present a close analysis of Metz's writings, their theoretical and epistemological positions, and their ongoing influence today.

The author believes his most important ideas are in the field of astrophysics. They began with his desire to reconcile the dichotomy between the electro-magnetic and the quantum theories of light. His assumption about the nature of dark matter and dark energy, to explain the speed of light, was key. This concept of dark matter led to a new explanation for gravity, black holes and the big bang.

Catalog for an exhibition of Matthew Metzger’s paintings at the Renaissance Society. Published on the occasion of Matthew Metzger’s exhibition Heirloom at the Renaissance Society, this is the first book dedicated to the artist’s paintings, which echo and explore various kinds of abstraction. Anchored by the new paintings Metzger made for this exhibition—a set of works conceived as an installation for the Renaissance Society’s space that also serve as the subject of an essay by curator Karsten Lund—the book also features four other series of paintings by the artist, each of which further charts his evolving aesthetic and conceptual strategies. For this publication, Metzger has also invited six writers—including Kris Cohen, Fumi Okiji, Hamza Walker, Jan Verwoert, and Anna Zett—to reflect on how abstraction functions more broadly, whether as a psychological tendency, a social phenomenon, or a technological side effect, among many other possibilities.
Hélène Metzger, Historian and Historiographer of the Sciences
Is there something important to learn from the history of science about knowledge and the mind? Do habits and emotions play a significant role in science? To what extent do present concerns and knowledge distort our understanding of past texts and practices? These are crucial questions in current debates, but they are not new. This monograph evaluates the answers to these and other questions that Hélène Metzger (1889-1944) provided. Metzger, who was the leading historian of chemistry of her generation, left us unparalleled reflections on the theory, practice and aims of history writing. Despite her influence on subsequent generations of thinkers, including Thomas Kuhn, this is the first full-length monograph on her. Beginning with an overview of her life, and the challenges faced by a Jewish woman working within academia, the book goes on to discuss the most important themes of her historiography, and her engagement with other disciplines, notably general history, philosophy, ethnology and religious studies. The book also explores both Metzger’s immediate legacy and the relevance of her ideas for a host of current debates in science studies. The Appendices include four of her historiographical papers, translated into English for the first time.

Gustav Metzger Lift Off!

KETTLE'S YARD GALLERY

“When I was young I wanted art that would lift off – that would levitate, gyrate, bring together different – perhaps contradictory aspects of my being” Gustav Metzger Gustav Metzger(1926-2017) was one of the foremost figures of the post-war avant-garde in Britain, with a career has spanned over 60 years of art and political activism. In 2014 Kettle’s Yard presented LIFT OFF! - an ambitious exhibition bringing together archive, film, sculpture and installations focusing on a less familiar but central area of Metzger’s practice – his auto-creative process driven work – the alter ego of his better-known auto-destructive practice. The exhibition marked something of a homecoming for Metzger, who began his artistic career at the Cambridge School of Art in 1944 and returned to deliver two seminal lecture/demonstrations (1960/1965) at the University of Cambridge. This publication documents the artist’s most ephemeral Auto-Creative artworks of the 1960s, and new works created by Metzger especially for LIFT OFF! It includes new texts by curator Elizabeth Fisher that illuminate this less well known aspect of Metzger’s practice.
