Oral Patterns of Performance

Oral Patterns of Performance

Barre Toelken

Utah State University Press
2014
nidottu
To many Native American cultures, songs and stories are dramatic enactments of reality, and words bring reality into existence. In this chapter from his award-winning book, "The Anguish of Snails," Toelken thoughtfully approaches a number of stories from Native American traditions, discussing how narratives can be touchstones of shared values among closely associated traditional people and how songs and stories go far beyond an evening's entertainment or "lessons about life. A traditional narrative can be a culturally structured way of thinking and of experiencing the patterns that make culture real."

Oral History and Communities of Color

Oral History and Communities of Color

Oral history has been employed for decades by anthropologists, historians, and sociologists to collect data about lived experience. This volume explores how oral history, using video recordings and storytelling as well as interviews, can be used for a number of purposes in communities of color. The authors discuss oral histories that are intended not only to record the culture and history of understudied communities; they also address other goals, such as increasing student interaction with diverse communities and developing effective health interventions.Oral History and Communities of Color presents five essays, each of which considers a different racial/ethnic community: Asian American, American Indian, Latino, African American, and Muslim. Interviews with two scholars who integrate oral history into their research touch on oral history's theoretical foundation in cultural anthropology, particular considerations for collecting oral histories in specific communities, and the importance of including the narrator's personal story.

A multidisciplinary approach to the problems related to the diagnosis, treat ment, and rehabilitation of patients with oral cancer and precancer is reflected in the various specialties of the authors who contributed to this book. Today, patients with tumors of the oral cavity are dealt with preferably by a team of specialists who have been properly trained in the field of oncology, who have learned to appreciate each other's knowledge and experience, and who are able to operate as an integrated team. This book is intended for use by every physician and dentist involved in the diagnosis and management of oral cancer. It is 'presented in such a way as to be useful for both the physician in training as well as the specialist in the field of head and neck oncology. The text concentrates on the common as well as the unusual aspects. For those who look for more detailed information, an exten sive list of references is provided at the end of each chapter. It should be emphasized that treatment policies may vary not only in differ ent parts of the world, but also from institution to institution, depending on the expertise of the members of the oncologic team and the available facilities.
