Miami University in Oxford, Ohio offers a course entitled "Sustainability Perspectives," based on this text. The course was awarded "The Instructional Innovation Award" at the 1996 annual meeting of the Decision Sciences Institute, an association of Decision Science professionals headquartered at Georgia State University in Atlanta. The 1990's have seen the development of important new approaches to sustaining corporate development and protecting the environment. Corporations are beginning to realize their responsibilities for a healthy environment. Sustainable development is viewed as an integrated, ecological, economic, and social system in which both economic growth and quality-of-life improvements can occur in a unified system complementary to the maintenance of natural capital. Sustainability Perspectives for Resources and Businesses shows the reader that a sound understanding of the concepts involved in sustainable development is beneficial to businesses, natural resources, and the population in general. This textbook was written to help students and professionals involved in business, science, or engineering to understand the changes occurring in the workplace. It serves as a step toward understanding how business and science, as professional communities, are adapting to new information about risks to the environment. Various chapters are devoted to resources, values, and valuation systems. Each section develops principles such as resilience and integrity in the economy and the environment.

A Cultural History of Japanese Women’s Language

A Cultural History of Japanese Women’s Language

Orie Endo; Orie Endô

Among Japanese nostalgic for older times, as well as students and scholars of Japanese, it is commonly assumed that the Japanese language possesses special words reserved for women. Did these “women’s words” actually exist at the very beginnings of the Japanese language? If such words were in fact part of the language, what kinds of attitudes and treatment toward women were inscribed in them? In her endeavor to address these questions, Endo Orie explores Japan’s early literary works to discover what they have to say about the Japanese language. Among her most significant conclusions is the finding that “womanly” language in Japan was socially mandated and regulated only with the beginning of warrior rule in the Kamakura period. Now, in contemporary Japan, critics charge that women’s language has lost its “womanly” qualities and has veered perilously close to men’s language. However, if we look at the evidence of history, what we may actually be witnessing is a return to the origins of the Japanese language when no sexual distinctions were made between users.

Endo Orie's book is about n shu, a unique form of writing that appeared in rural China in the modern era. As the book reveals, the date of its origin is under dispute. However, like Korean and Japanese writing systems, n shu has a close connection to women since writing with Chinese characters was traditionally tied to patriarchal privilege. Women extrapolated new graphs from conventional Chinese characters, using them to record various aspects of their emotional lives. It ws a script created by women, for heartfelt communication between women. This is an unusually personal book, authored by Endo Orie-a well-known Japanese linguist with many books on gender and language. She stumbled upon the n shu writing system while hiking in Hunan in the 1990s. Here she introduces narrating its discovery and mourning the way its original intimacies are fading away.
