This is an autobiography of an insider in Edward Heath's cabinet and Margaret Thatcher's shadow cabinet, outside, but observant of Thatcher's and Major's cabinets. John Peyton was born in 1919 and was a Member of Parliament from 1951 until 1983. He was a Minister in Edward Heath's government, and was the only member of Margaret Thatcher's shadow cabinet not to become a minister following Thatcher's election triumph in 1979. It is likely that his rejection by Thatcher lay in her persistence in saying what he thought in the shadow cabinet. After education at Eton and Oxford, Peyton entered World War II and was one of the first British soldiers to be captured by the Germans. His account of five years as a POW is a story of endurance, camaraderie and the importance of humour, a quality with which Peyton is liberally endowed and which permeates the volume. In 1946, Peyton became Personal Assistant to Walter Monckton and worked with him in India at the time of Independence. During his 32 years in the House of Commons, and subsequently in the House of Lords, he has never been an unquestioning supporter of the party liine. He has pursued a variety of business and other interests.

The modern church is facing a discipleship crisis. Research shows that only one-third of Christians in America are actively engaged in making disciples--leaving a massive gap in the mission Jesus gave us. Without a clear strategy, many churches struggle to move believers from passive attendance to active participation in the work of the Gospel. In Discipology, Jones challenges pastors, church leaders, and ministry teams to return to the original model of discipleship that Jesus demonstrated. Rather than relying on programs or events, Jesus focused on three essential elements that formed the foundation of lasting disciple-making: Time, Teaching, and Tactics.Through intentional time spent with a small group of followers, consistent teaching rooted in Scripture, and practical tactics for engaging in mission, Jesus set a clear and reproducible pattern for spiritual multiplication. Discipology unpacks each of these elements in detail, offering leaders a practical, biblical framework that takes the mystery out of discipleship and provides a clear path for mobilizing their people. This book is written specifically for pastors, church leaders, and ministry workers who long to see real spiritual growth in their communities. It's designed to help you build a disciple-making culture that empowers ordinary believers to live out their faith in everyday life. Alongside the book, an accompanying journal is available for your congregation, volunteers, small groups, and ministry teams--equipping them to walk through the principles of Discipology in a hands-on, personal way.The mission of the Church has always been disciple-making. It's time to return to the way of Jesus--and to lead the next generation into it.

Reaching the Unreached

Reaching the Unreached

For too long church leaders have focused on increasing the size of their church rather than increasing their reach outside of the four walls of the church building. The result? Church life becomes a predictable set of routines with predictable results. Church members struggle to reach the neighborhoods they drive through on their way to church programs, unable to penetrate their surrounding communities in a meaningful way. Reaching the Unreached recounts the stories, struggles, and triumphs of individuals and churches that have reinvented themselves to meet the world where it is, working to reach the ones that no one else is reaching. The search for the “silver bullet” of success has diverted us from tapping into the timeless principles found in the book of Acts, says author, pastor, and front-line church planter Peyton Jones. Yet the spiritual climate that Paul and the Apostles stepped into is not all that different from the brave new world the church faces today. From accidentally planting a church in a Starbucks in Europe, to baptizing members of the Mexican mafia in Long Beach Harbor, Jones has been on the frontlines of today’s missional movement and has lived to tell the tale. In Reaching the Unreached, he teaches church planters, pastors, and church leaders how to convert pew jockeys into missionaries and awake the sleeping giant of Christ’s church, one person at a time.Today there are two types of churches: those who put their proverbial heads in the sand, and those who champion 1st century principles, meet the challenges head on, and embrace the adventure of mission in community. Tomorrow, only one type of church will survive—those that accept the challenge to reach the unreached.

The first comprehensive textbook on effective church planting from a veteran church planter. The Apostle Paul was a veteran church planter who "laid a foundation like a wise and master builder" and there is much we can learn from his example. Paul indicated that there were basic skills and experiences required to successfully plant a church. Church Plantology examines the wide variety of church planting methods and ideologies in contemporary pastoral practice and outlines a biblical model based on the New Testament.During his time in prison, Paul spent much of his time writing to Titus, Timothy, and others who'd served alongside him in the trenches to complete their training as church plantings. We can continue to apply these time-tested, proven methods, following the pioneering example of the early church.Today, the casualty rate in is high. What if we could reduce the odds of failing? Church Plantology by Peyton Jones is a robust guide to planting that will help planters to provide the foundation necessary to survive beyond the initial first years so that they don't end up a walking statistic.

A bighearted dystopian novel about the corrosive effects of fear and the redemptive power of love. With soaring literary prose and the tense pacing of a thriller, the first-time novelist Peyton Marshall imagines a grim and startling future. At the end of the twenty-first century-in a transformed America-the sons of convicted felons are tested for a set of genetic markers. Boys who test positive become compulsory wards of the state-removed from their homes and raised on "Goodhouse" campuses, where they learn to reform their darkest thoughts and impulses. Goodhouse is a savage place-part prison, part boarding school-and now a radical religious group, the Holy Redeemer's Church of Purity, is intent on destroying each campus and purifying every child with fire.We see all this through the eyes of James, a transfer student who watched as the radicals set fire to his old Goodhouse and killed nearly everyone he'd ever known. In addition to adjusting to a new campus with new rules, James now has to contend with Bethany, a brilliant, medically fragile girl who wants to save him, and with her father, the school's sinister director of medical studies. Soon, however, James realizes that the biggest threat might already be there, inside the fortified walls of Goodhouse itself.Partly based on the true story of the nineteenth-century Preston School of Industry, Goodhouse explores questions of identity and free will-and what it means to test the limits of human endurance.

A comprehensive introduction to radar principles This volume fills a need in industry and universities for a comprehensive introductory text on radar principles. Well-organized and pedagogically driven, this book focuses on basic and optimum methods of realizing radar operations, covers modern applications, and provides a detailed, sophisticated mathematical treatment. Author Peyton Z. Peebles, Jr., draws on an extensive review of existing radar literature to present a selection of the most fundamental topics. He clearly explains general principles, such as wave propagation and signal theory, before advancing to more complex topics involving aspects of measurement and tracking. The last chapter provides a self-contained treatment of digital signal processing, which can be explored independently. Ample teaching and self-study help is incorporated throughout, including: *Numerous worked-out examples illustrating radar theory *Many end-of-chapter problems *Hundreds of illustrations, including system block diagrams, demonstrating how radar functions are achieved *Appended review material and useful mathematical formulas *An extensive bibliography and references. Radar Principles is destined to become the standard text on radar for graduate and senior-level courses in electrical engineering departments as well as industrial courses. It is also an excellent reference for engineers who are typically required to learn radar principles on the job, and for anyone working in radar-related industries as well as in aerospace and naval research.

Bibliography and Footnotes: A Style Manual for Students and Writers serves as a guide for scholarly writers, providing techniques and conventions essential for the accurate citation of sources. The manual underscores the importance of documenting sources to acknowledge the author's reliance on them, invite scrutiny, and support interpretations and conclusions. Bibliography and footnotes serve complementary purposes: bibliographies offer detailed references to works consulted, while footnotes provide specific citations tied to the text. By clearly distinguishing these functions, the manual ensures citations are meaningful and intelligible, emphasizing clarity, conciseness, consistency, and accuracy. A consistent style of citation aids the reader in identifying and locating cited works without ambiguity, regardless of disciplinary differences in format preferences. The manual acknowledges variations in citation practices across fields, from the detailed references of humanities to the abbreviated styles of scientific and legal works. While offering a standard method for citation, it also accommodates modifications tailored to individual needs and subject requirements, provided these adhere to sound bibliographical principles. Writers are urged to adopt a systematic approach to recording references, avoiding common pitfalls like incomplete author names or publication details. Precision and consistency in citations not only save time but also reflect the rigor essential to scholarly work. The manual, therefore, is not just a technical guide but also a resource for cultivating habits of thoroughness and accuracy in academic writing, fostering both reliability and credibility. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1949.
