Explore the tumultuous presidency of Franklin Pierce, the 14th leader of the United States in Franklin Pierce's book. This insightful biography delves into the life and times of a president who faced immense challenges and controversies during one of the most critical periods in American history. Born in New Hampshire, Franklin Pierce's political career took him from the House of Representatives to the Senate before becoming the President of the United States. His presidency, which spanned from 1853 to 1857, was marked by deeply divisive issues, particularly the question of slavery's expansion into newly acquired territories. Pierce's support for the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which allowed territories to decide on the issue of slavery, further inflamed tensions between the North and South. His enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Act alienated anti-slavery groups, ultimately contributing to the onset of the American Civil War. Despite his initial popularity and election victory, Pierce's presidency was fraught with difficulties. He struggled to balance the diverse interests within the Democratic Party, and his efforts at civil service reform and patronage largely failed. His administration's handling of international affairs, including attempts to acquire Cuba and the signing of significant trade treaties, faced criticism and controversy. Personal tragedy also shadowed Pierce's life, with the loss of his children and his wife's long battle with illness and depression. His presidency came to an end with a sharply declining reputation in the North and a Democratic Party that abandoned him. This book provides a comprehensive look at a president who grappled with the complexities of his era and left a controversial legacy that continues to be a subject of historical debate.

Franklin Pierce was one of the least known, least liked, and least successful presidents in American history. In this new study of his administration, historian Larry Gara makes no attempt to revive Pierce's reputation. Instead he provides a clear analysis of Pierce's shortcomings as well as his few successes. Franklin Pierce's administration (1853-1857) spanned a turbulent period in the life of the nation: North-South polarization reached new extremes due, in part, to Pierce's failure to understand the depth of Free Soil sentiment in the North; the Kansas-Nebraska Act and its aftermath made civil war likely, if not inevitable; and Pierce's apology for southern actions served only to widen the rift. The term Bleeding Kansas came to symbolize the failures of Pierce's administration. Pierce's few achievements were in the realm of foreign policy. In fact, Gara points out, the Pierce years were an important chapter in the history of American imperialisma time when Japan was opened to the West, U.S. trade in Central America and Asia was expanded, and additional land was acquired from Mexico. Pierce also initiated discussions on acquiring Alaska, the Hawaiian Islands, Nicaragua, Formosa, the Dominican Republic, the guano islands of the Pacific, and Cuba. In this twenty-fourth volume of the American Presidency Series, Gara provides a clear, tough-minded analysis of the Pierce administration and a fair, though generally negative, assessment the man and the president.

When introverted Jane Appleton and charismatic Franklin Pierce first met, they fell in love immediately, despite being complete opposites. Jane’s pious family vetoed any relationship between them, and it was eight years before they finally married. Their life together was a loving though often difficult one, as frail Jane adapted to the uncertainties of political life that climaxed in ostensible deceit and tragedy just prior to Franklin’s presidency. This book offers insight into the dynasty to which Jane belonged and profiles earlier generations, providing a wider perception of her family’s history. Through family letters and anecdotes, it details Jane’s complex life and defines the social and health features of the era. Aspects of Jane’s childhood that may have accounted for her melancholic nature and inhibitions are revealed. This book also explores the truths behind the many myths surrounding this tragic first lady.
