A History of Discoveries at Halicarnassus, Cnidus and Branchidae

A History of Discoveries at Halicarnassus, Cnidus and Branchidae

Charles Thomas Newton; Richard Popplewell Pullan

Cambridge University Press
2011
pokkari
Charles Thomas Newton (1816–1894) was a British archaeologist specialising in Greek and Roman artefacts. He studied at Christ Church, Oxford before joining the British Museum. Newton left the Museum in 1852 to explore the coast of Asia Minor, and in 1856 he discovered the remains of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the seven ancient wonders of the world. This study, first published in 1862, contains Newton's descriptions of the archaeological excavations of the Mausoleum and other sites. Compiled from Newton's official reports, this detailed account of the archaeological procedures used in his excavation and the artefacts he found provides valuable insights into mid-nineteenth-century practice. The original edition included a large volume of plates, which it is not feasible to reproduce at this time. However the information in the text volumes is of sufficient importance to merit their reissue independently. Part 1 contains descriptions of the Mausoleum.

Tolerance, Regulation and Rescue

Tolerance, Regulation and Rescue

Looking at Catholic charity and social policy in past times, this book focuses on 'unrespectable' women and children in Italy, and their treatment at the hands of charities and the law. It looks at prostitutes and women engaged in sexual relationships outside formal marriage, and foundlings, many of whom were abandoned because they were born out of wedlock. A wide-ranging synoptic survey, this study considers the practical complications and consequences of communities' decisions to accommodate and regulate activities considered bad but irrepressible: of the belief that licensed prostitution and controlled abandonment could be used to avert greater evils, from sodomy and adultery to infanticide and abortion. Accessibly written, Tolerance, regulation and rescue discusses social problems which are still the subject of debate, and should appeal not only to academics and students, but also to general readers.
The Jews of Europe and the Inquisition of Venice, 1550-1670
A paperback edition of a much-acclaimed history of Europe's forgotten Inquisition. Venice in the 16th and 17th centuries was on the frontier between Christianiity and Judaism, being one of the principal points of departure from Europe to the Levant, and of re-entry from the Ottoman Empire. It was often the place where Europeans of Jewish origin made their final choice between Christianity and Judaism, and those who hesitated over their choice, or behaved ambiguously, frequently fell into the hands of the Inquisition. Pullan examines the social and political purpose of the Inquisition: its composition, procedures and legal entitlement to judge Jews. He explains the origins of the new Christians of Portugal and the neophytes of Italy, and describes those Christians who, though having no Jewish ancestry, nevertheless were attracted - at some risk to themselves - by the doctrines and customs of Judaism.

Computational Morphology is the first book to present an integrated set of techniques for the rigorous description of morphological phenomena in English and similar languages. Previous work on morphology has largely tended either to avoid precise computational details or to ignore linguistic generality. Computational Morphology is the first book to present an integrated set of techniques for the rigorous description of morphological phenomena in English and similar languages. By taking account of all facets of morphological analysis, it provides a linguistically general and computationally practical dictionary system for use within an English parsing program. The authors cover morphographemics (variations in spelling as words are built from their component morphemes), morphotactics (the ways that different classes of morphemes can combine, and the types of words that result), and lexical redundancy (patterns of similarity and regularity among the lexical entries for words). They propose a precise rule-notation for each of these areas of linguistic description and present the algorithms for using these rules computationally to manipulate dictionary information. These mechanisms have been implemented in practical and publicly available software, which is described in detail, and appendixes contain a large number of computer-tested sets of rules and lexical entries for English.
Inherit the Sun: Who really murdered the Princes

Over the centuries Richard III has been cast by the Tudor historians as well as William Shakespeare as a villain and murderer of his two nephews, Edward and Richard, in the Tower of London. However recent biographies that have studied new historical documents have taken the view that there were two other candidates that had much stronger motives to do away with the princes. "Inherit the Sun" takes a more modern approach as to who was the actual murderer.
Examples & Explanations for Legal Research

Examples & Explanations: Legal Research is designed to meet the needs of law students who have come to expect that they will instantly receive answers to their questions. Rather than cataloging sources or outlining processes, this text starts where today's law students are when they realize they have a research problem. By that time, their research problem is not locating sources, but knowing what to do with them. The Legal Research E & E guides students through examples and explanations of the kinds of sources they've found, using the context of interesting and entertaining real-world problems. The text helps students determine which sources are the most useful for the current project and which not; it leads students to understand how one source affects and relates to the others; and--equally important--it shows students how to write about the sources they have found. Because this book covers the kinds of research projects faced not only by beginning law students but also by advanced students and even new lawyers, its value to its readers is long-lasting. Even experienced researchers will learn more about working with the difficult, as well as the easy, research questions that today are addressed by an array of sources.
