Here is what readers have to say about C.R.I.M.S.O.N.: "A new genre is created: Homeschool action thriller The Vision is truly inspiring " Virginia T. - Homeschool mother of three young men. "I thought the characters were so easy to relate to. Josh, Rebekah... I feel like I know them all. I think the book had a great message that people working together and with God can make a change for the better. ... It is easy to get wrapped up in the story and in the suspense at times. I can't wait to read what you have planned next." Chandler L. - Homeschool Sophomore, speech and debate club competitor. "I loved the suspense and action in this book. As the climax rose the mystery of the conflict and the apprehension of the main character created a tension that was addictive. A suspense that did not allow me to lay the book down. The history and relationships intertwined in such a way as to create a complicated, round conflict. I thoroughly enjoyed C.R.I.M.S.O.N." Jules G. - Homeschool Freshman "R. H. Krebs' portrayal of homeschooling, intense homeschool mothers and homeschool support groups, the complex relationships between homeschool fathers and kids, were rich snapshots of the unknown and often misunderstood world of homeschooling. C.R.I.M.S.O.N. encourages homeschool students to pursue futures in the legal and governmental spheres. The writing is sharp, the story is tight and the whole book is saturated with a dry intelligent wit. I loved it " Jess G. - Homeschool student and Westmont University journalism graduate.

From New York Times bestselling author Walter Mosley, this life-affirming novel about an aging bluesman in New York City and the neighbor who takes him in after he's evicted is "a mesmerizing and redemptive tale of friendship, love, and forgiveness" (San Francisco Review of Books). Soupspoon Wise is alone and dying of cancer on the unforgiving streets of New York City, years and worlds away from the Mississippi delta, where he once jammed with blues legend Robert "RL" Johnson. It was an experience that burned indelibly into Soupspoon's soul--never mind that they said RL's gift came from the Devil himself. Now it's Soupspoon's turn to strike a deal with a stranger. A hard-drinking, swearing redhead from Arkansas, neighbor Kiki Waters isn't much better off than Soupspoon, but she too is a child of the South, and knows its pull. And she is determined to let Soupspoon ride out the final notes of his haunting blues dream, to pour out the remarkable tale of what he's seen, where he's been--and where he's going. Mosley creates a "a meditation on the history and meaning of the blues" (Entertainment Weekly) in R L's Dream, which practically sings a soulful blues song itself.

Zvi Griliches

Zvi Griliches was a modern master of empirical economics. In this short book, he recounts what he and others have learned about the sources of economic growth. This book conveys the way he tackled research problems. For Griliches, economic theorizing without measurement is merely the fashioning of parables, but measurement without theory is blind. Judgment enables one to strike the right balance. The book begins with economists' first attempts to measure productivity growth systematically in the 1930s. In the mid-1950s these efforts culminated in a startling puzzle. The growth of measured inputs like labor and capital explained only a fraction of the growth of national output. Economists called this phenomenon "efficiency" or "technical change" or "the residual." However, Griliches observes that the most accurate name was a "measure of our ignorance." What explained the rest of economic growth quickly became one of the most important questions in economics. Over the next thirty years, Griliches and his colleagues and students looked for various components of the residual in education (the formation of human capital), investment (the formation of physical capital), and research and development. In 1973, after the oil price shocks, productivity growth slowed and the residual almost disappeared. Since the shocks were a short-term phenomenon, they could not account for the slowdown. A main focus of this book is therefore the puzzle of the productivity slowdown and how to date it and how to explain it.

R. H. Tawney and His Times

Ross Terrill

Harvard University Press

Economic historian, democratic socialist, educator, and British labor party activist, R. H. Tawney touched many worlds. His life, too, spanned great distance and change. When he was born in Calcutta in 1880, Gladstone, Tennyson, and Queen Victoria were flourishing and the British Empire was approaching its height. By the time of his death in 1962, the Empire had shrunk to a few tourist islands, and socialism, once so shocking, was now commonplace.Ross Terrill, in this absorbing first study of Tawney’s thought, view his subject within three related contexts. The first is Tawney, the man. Terrill makes skillful use of unpublished material—the early diary, speech and lecture notes, letters, interviews with friends and associates—to tell the story of Tawney’s life in relation to his times. Second is social democracy. Tawney was one of its most influential philosophers and prophets, and this book argues for the continuing validity of his socialism as a path between capitalism and communism. Third is British politics. From Edwardian liberal “consensus” to mid-century collectivist “consensus,” Tawney’s long career, often at odds with prevailing orthodoxies, offers a window on British political culture.Four key ideas are found in Tawney’s political thought: equality and the dispersion of power—the “shape of socialism”; function and citizenship—the “life of socialism.” These ideas, and indeed the life of the man himself, Terrill believes, are summed up in socialism as fellowship. “As long as men are men,” Tawney said, “a poor society cannot be too poor to find a right order of life, nor a rich society too rich to have need to seek it.”This book is a blend of biography, history, and the study of political ideas. It provides a striking portrait of a remarkable man and a panorama of changing ideas and situations in the society where he tried to realize his socialist vision. It offers many glimpses of Tawney’s associates, among them Beveridge, the Webbs, Laski, A. P. Wadsworth, Temple, Margaret Cole, and Leonard Woolf; and surprising snippets, like the fact that Tawney used the phrase “private affluence and public squalor” in 1919.
