Raymond Williams: A Short Counter Revolution
Raymond Williams: A Short Counter-Revolution amply demonstrates the continuing relevance of Williams’s analysis, from the early 1980s, to our current situation. After thirty years of neoliberalism his insights still read as freshly and as incisively as they first did. Jim McGuigan’s new chapter explicitly extends the lines of continuity from then to now, in a persuasive and at times appropriately critical way. Williams’s concluding chapter, Resources for a Journey of Hope remains as inspiring, and as necessary, as ever. - Simon Dentith, University of Reading "It's great that Towards 2000 is revisited. Jim McGuigan's preface to this edition and his remarkable up-dating chapter A Short Counter Revolution draw upon a formidable range of references to illustrate why this work is as fresh and insightful today as it was 30 years ago." - Derek Tatton, 'Culture,' wrote Raymond Williams, ‘is one of the most complicated words in the English language.’ Ironically, the most important British writer on culture in the post-war period is also one of the most poorly digested among today’s readers. Originally conceived as the sequel to his 1961 The Long Revolution, Williams' 1983 title Towards 2000 has been unfairly classified as a period piece. With the permission of the Williams Estate, the book has been re-entitled A Short Counter-Revolution – Towards 2000 Revisited, with noted Williams expert Jim McGuigan adding a chapter that updates the original with a survey of developments since its publication, particularly concerning the impact of neoliberalism, a phenomenon sighted early by Raymond Williams and named ‘Plan X’. In this new edition, Jim McGuigan makes a totally convincing case to read the book as a contemporary classic. It remains an indispensable guide to: Power and inequalityClass politicsPost-industrial societyGlobalizationThe crisis in democracy

The present volume makes available in one convenient place all the research papers published by Raymond D. Mindlin in the course of a half-century of professional activity. Included, in addition, is the full text of three of his extended review articles, because these remain timely as well as historically important. Also to be found here is a brief sketch, written by one of us, his student and co-author, colleague and friend. It contains Mindlin's basic biographical data, although it dwells primarily on an analysis of his work and a chronicling of his accomplishments. The papers reprinted herein are reproduced photographically as they ap peared originally. We have excluded several short review articles; moreover, to our regret, because of constraints of space we have been unable to print three extended reviews. These are: "The photoelastic method of stress analy sis," published in volume 10 of the Journal of Applied Physics; a short mono graph, "Dynamics of package cushioning," which may be found in volume 24 of the Bell System Technical Journal; and the chapter entitled "Analogies," written for the Handbook of Experimental Stress Analysis.

But beyond this point the situation was -- bitter.
The Year When Stardust Fell by Raymond F. Jones, Science Fiction, Fantasy
That night the comet was the only thing in the whole sky. All the stars were smothered by the light of its copper-yellow flame, and, although the sun had set two hours ago, the Earth was lit as with the glow of a thunderous dawn.In Mayfield, Ken Maddox walked slowly along Main Street, avoiding collisions with other people whose eyes were fixed on the object in the sky. Ken had spent scores of hours observing the comet carefully, both by naked eye and with his 12-inch reflecting telescope. Still he could not keep from watching it as he picked his way along the street toward the post office. The comet had been approaching Earth for months, growing steadily to bigger proportions in the sky, but tonight was a very special night, and Mayfield was watching with increased awe and half-dread -- as were hundreds of thousands of other communities around the world.Tonight, the Earth entered the comet's tail, and during the coming winter would be swept continuously by its million-mile spread.

Featuring recipes from Raymond's ITV series - SIMPLY RAYMOND BLANC'Of the many cookery books that I have written, this one has the most extraordinary story,' says Raymond Blanc. His long-held plan to write a simple cookbook - inspired by his mother, Maman Blanc - began months before the Covid pandemic hit.Suddenly everything changed, and Raymond, like the rest of the world, struggled to find a way through lockdown. At home, and isolated from his family - as well as his army of chefs at the world-renowned two-star Michelin restaurant Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons and his Brasserie Blanc restaurants - Raymond cooked and cooked. He opted for the simple dishes that evoked the happy memories, provided the connection to those he could not be with. He focused on recipes that were neither a challenge nor fussy. They required ingredients that were easily-available and needed only basic kitchen equipment. The result is Simply Raymond. It is a collection of his favourite home-cooked recipes - the dishes that mean the most to him; the ones that connect family and friends, and dishes that took him on stove-side travels to other parts of the world. Dish by dish, Simply Raymond presents an irresistible feast. This is cooking from the heart, and here you'll find must-make dishes to add to your weekly repertoire, as well as others for special occasions. There is also a profound poignancy to this book. Raymond Aron's Philosophy of Political Responsibility

Raymond Aron made major investigations into the dialectic between war and peace, and also developed a sophisticated theory of international relations. Despite this, his body of work has been overlooked compared to that of his more famous contemporaries. This book shines a light on both the man and his work on ideological critique, the philosophy of history, international relations and political economy. The book also discusses Aron's political legacy and argues that a number of his critiques and theories can help us address many of the problems and conflicts of the 21st century.
