This third volume of tales by Shawn M. Tomlinson collects all of the cyberpunk stories the author wrote in the 1980s. Some of them previously appeared in the chapbook titled 'Closer' in 1988. These hard-edged stories take a bleak look at a post-apocalyptic cityscape in Upstate New York.
In this volume of the Shawn M. Tomlinson Guide to Photography Series, Tomlinson takes an in-depth look at the Sony A100 and continues his series devoted to helping budding photographers get started without breaking the bank. In this case, Tomlinson considers the first Sony DSLR to be great start. "After waiting the proper mourning time for Minolta - about a year - Sony took the black armband off and unveiled its first DSLR, the A100. And why is this important now? It's vitally important if you are a beginning photographer and want to get a great DSLR and great lenses that won't mortgage your house."
Chloe felt it first. It was like a low-powered wave that lifted them slightly as it passed. There was a low whooshing noise, but brief. They all looked at each other. Martin noticed a familiar sound outside. He went to a large window, looked down at the avenue and saw what he expected: boxy cars in a variety of colors. Chloe said, "That's odd." In the parking lot, they found the horse and carriage had become a 1965 Ford Mustang in bright, bright red. "Definitely a Time wave," Chloe said. "Yes," Alan agreed. "It does appear, sometimes, like since we met Jebba and Trevor, we keep bumping into this kind of ridiculous stuff," Martin said. "And I used to dream that Time travel was possible." Now they all knew it not only was possible, but for them inevitable. With Time shifting around them moment to moment, there was no stability. "Just another Time mess they've gotten us into, Stanley," Martin said, and shrugged.
Shawn M. Tomlinson set out to be a rock star. He wrote his first lyrics at age 14 and they were spectacularly dreadful. Undaunted, he partnered with James G. Collins to form a variety of bands and to write songs. When their partnership fell apart, Tomlinson kept writing songs, but eventually - finding it difficult to put music to his own lyrics - he cleverly started calling them "poems," but no one was fooled. One 2 a.m. day, through lack of sleep and better judgment, Tomlinson formed Zirlinson Publishing with Gary Ziroli and Eileen Anderson. He set to work turning the paper sideways in his typewriter. Ziroli drew a too flattering image of him for the cover. In the fall of 1983, it became 'Visions of the Lost Mind.' Between 1983 and 1996 or so, Tomlinson continued to publish chapbooks with and without Ziroli and Anderson. 'The Black Books' - four volumes - collects most of the "poetry" Tomlinson write before giving it up when sobering up from his delusions that anyone wanted to read "poetry" anyway.
When Canon entered the digital professional photography market, the Powers That Be decided they would compromise between the smaller sensor that Nikon used and the full-frame sensor Kodak was using for its short-lived pro DSLR line. The Canon EOS 1D definitely was a success and still is sought after, The designers at Canon, though, couldn't seem to let go of the full-frame sensor idea. Scarcely a year after the 1D, the company released the Canon EOS 1DS in late 2002. And it was/is a fantastic pro camera. Around two years later, the Canon EOS 1DS Mark II hit the shelves and it was just that much better. Both cameras still are viable options at low cost for using a pro DSLR camera. They're a lot of fun, too.
Photography has gone through at least seven revolutions since it began. Each one has occurred at some crucial moment in history and has changed the way we make photographs. The design of the Nikon F4 was the basis, the prototype for all DSLR cameras to come. If you use a DSLR at any level, it's granddad was the F4. That said, the Nikon F4 still is a film camera and that requires a different mindset that shooting with a DSLR. With film, I take my time. I know the images are going to be - or at least are meant to be - special. Since I am shooting film with the Nikon F4 in the second decade of the 21st century, I also know the images are going to be different than what most people shoot. The Nikon F4 is such an elegant work of art itself, it helps me to think more artistically when I create photographs. It's just one of those few cameras that is beautiful to behold and a joy to use.
Film cameras - the bodies themselves - have little to do with image quality. Lenses are far more important to image quality than camera bodies. So, as long as your camera has accurate shutter speeds, aperture settings and metering, the brand you pick doesn't really have much of an effect upon the final image. So, then, it appears the model camera you choose is irrelevant. Well, no. The type of film SLR camera you choose is most important to you as the photographer in features and convenience. Comfort has a lot to do with how good you are as a photographer. What I mean by that is that, you choose a camera that feels comfortable in your hands and becomes an extension of your brain as a photographer. This makes it easier to capture the types of images you want.
Tommy guns blasting, the trucks swooped in toward yet-to-be-elected Franklin D. Roosevelt. There were screams from the crowd. Martin, on the running board, pushed FDR down, Eleanor following suit. Chloe shot the driver in the first truck. The truck swerved, tipped over. Chloe was shooting at the driver of the second truck, but it had bullet-proof glass. She kept firing, but the truck kept coming. Drive! Martin shouted. The driver squealed the wheels. The four hung on, protecting FDR. The truck was following with men leaning out the back, firing. Tommy guns didn t have much range, but they could kill close up. Martin shot the tire under the driver. The tire was tough, but finally it went. The truck swerved and rolled. Martin saw men pulling themselves out of the the truck. Chloe told the driver to get behind the green car and stop. She told Daniel and Joseph to help get Roosevelt into the gangster car. They were going to make certain FDR became president, no matter what.
In the Realm of the King is volume four of my complete shorter fiction collection. It contains some finished stories, but largely it contains a collection of unfinished pieces. Either I got stuck at certain points of the pieces or just stopped writing them. I first collected some unfinished tales in my chapbook titled 'Tales Without End Vol. 1' way back in 1995. It was, in fact, one of the last few chapbooks I published. This volume is an attempt to get most of my unfinished tales into one book. Who knows? I may complete some or all of them one day, or I may not. In any event, they are here for what they re worth.

Oh, yeah, and some of them are parts of series that are here published alone because I just was unable to find the other stories. I swore when I was young that that would never happen to me. It did. I m dealing with it. The reason that such stories those without endings and those for which there are other, connected stories is that, well, I m getting old. I wanted to collect the majority of my writings before I m dead. Some of these are very early stories. The earliest, I believe, is Counterterrorist. Yes, the main character s name is Jack, but it was written many years decades before Jack Bauer, counterterrorist, made it to TV in 24. That should be obvious, but I thought I d mention it. Just try to enjoy the stories.

There s a rose garden in Central Park. No, not that Central Park. The other one, in Schenectady, the Place Beyond the Pines. In the midst of a city trying to rebirth itself, revive itself from its industrial past, there is a patch of beauty most of the residents don t know exists. It is a magnet for young lovers, for school trips and, especially, for photographers. Shawn M. Tomlinson, armed with two cameras, entered the gates and found the beauty. It was his fourth year of annual pilgrimages.
